Title: Card Guard
Jeremy Soon - January 12, 2006 10:01 AM (GMT)
Any suggestions on what type should I buy? It is for normal bicycle decks.
I saw some with super high prices and some with normal prices. What are the difference, if I am not mistaken got one named Jerry Pouper or something...
Does card guard really helps keep card in crisp condition?

It is the condition of the hands that handle the cards that counts, If the hands are sweaty, dirty, slimy, etc during the handling of cards - no card guard can protect the cards
I don't use any guard at all - the only thing I do is to guard my hands before using the cards.
Jeremy, use the micro-fiber cloth on your hands first before using your cards. That's what I do and it work wonders.
isaac - January 13, 2006 03:01 AM (GMT)
totally agree with james tong :D
if we can keep our hand clean .. deck can last for very long
btw, off topic.. where to get the micro-fiber cloth ??
Adrian Khoo - January 13, 2006 03:56 AM (GMT)
i agree with the clean n dry hands too. i've many decks of cards which are still quite crisp. but maybe coz i seldom use :P but then im still interested in getting one too.. the PORPER clip is very tempting to me. i gues its diff from the normal clip because of the design, normal clip r made from right-angle folds, means theres no even pressure across the back of the cards. but porper's clip, it was designed in way that i'll provide even pressure to the cards. some what like having heavy books on the cards. nice... but the price is like way way up. anyway, Jeremy, if u r getting one of those, pls inform me too. mayb we can get it together? n some other things as well? let me know if ur ok wit it.

Isaac, you can get them from me. I imported them from USA and used them (separate pieces for different usage) for all m magic props. My magic items are well protected because of proper care with micro-fiber cloth.
This cloth is really different - it sucks in dirt, sweat and dirty things powerfully and all you need is rinsed the cloth with plain water and it is very clean.
I have tried cleaning a table top spilled with kopi-O-kao-kao and the table is clean and after rinsing the cloth with plain water you don't get any kopi-O mark on it at all. Try it with a normal cloth and you still see the kopi-O stains in it.
Each piece cost RM25.00 (excluding postage) - PM me if anyone is interested.
I don't have that many pieces left - only imported them for my own use to protect my magic props and accessories.

actually I meant new unopened decks by USPC. How long can we keep them until they loose their finish when they are opened? Expiry date... :D

As long as they are not stored in a hot place or a very humid place, they should last a very long time. Humidity and heat would wear out things very fast.
One more thing, be careful of insects - they can do damage too.

The card guard is not to protect your deck from being dirty, moist, etc. Its mainly to prevent your deck from warpping.
I tried leaving my deck in the open for a few minutes and when I got back, the deck was wrapped and you can feel the slight difference it a crisp new deck.
When handling, the sleights you do, the flourishes you execute, all tend to distort the deck. No matter how clean your hands are before you pick them up. You can see this when the deck is not straight or you can pick up 1 card and view it from the side. My cards tend to become distorted with use and a card guard helps to bring them back to as straight as possible.
having said that, I have to stress that having a card guard does not enable miracles and give your decks eternal life. The decks will mainly be spoilt eventually due to moisture in hands (sweat), T&R routines, etc. But it does prolong your deck for longer usage then not having one.

Microfibre cloth are commonly used nowadays to clean LCDs, glasses and any other items that are scratch prone.
I believe it can be purchased in most computer accesory stores.
I buy mine at SGD$4.50 per piece which amounts to about RM$10 at a Popular Bookstores over at Singapore.
I mainly use it on my computer, digicam and such. Never thought of cleaning my decks with those tho as i have a card guard ^_^ would give it a try tho.
Cheers!

I use it after my shower to clean myself up.

isaac - January 15, 2006 08:24 AM (GMT)
i am using card guard - the cheap one -- cost me 50bugs
normal card guard is just to prevent ur card get bend..
dun really help on keeping it clean.
i heard joe proper card clip is very good. :)
again .. clean hand is the best way.
Mr. James and Andy price is so much different.
may b is the size ...
what is the normal size ?? :)
isaac
Andy - January 15, 2006 10:02 AM (GMT)
I think the price is different because I buy locally and am not importing.
Microfibre cloth are quite common in Singapore and can be obtained in spectacle shops, Computer Accesory shops and in Popular Bookstores.
The one which I use is quite small. Its about the same size as those cloth that you are given when u purchase a new pair of glasses so this might be the reason as to why its cheaper too. For me, I do not use it on decks so the size suits me. Anyway, if its just for cleaning dust, i think its suffice even for decks
My apologies but I do not know the normal size. I guess it doesnt really matter as long as its convenient to carry around and gets the job done.
Cheers!

I was also planning to get a card guard as i have heard good reviews from my friends who own them. One question i have in mind is how long do you need to keep the deck in the guard to restore it? Is leaving it overnight enough? and btw have anyone here heard of card press?
It's like a newspaper holder ( the wooden ones ) but it's in square shape. so u put your deck in between and tighten the screws. understand? :D
Adrian Khoo - January 16, 2006 10:13 AM (GMT)
i heard its sometimes just cheaper to invest on new decks cheesycake. i dono. but im still interested in the clip as well... mayb wana custom made one... hahah
Sukyi - January 16, 2006 11:37 AM (GMT)

isaac - January 16, 2006 12:29 PM (GMT)

i just have a ceplak one but its good enough for me.... :)
u want the best, get Joe Porper. Perhaps Jeff can tell u more abt it....:)
Cheers,
Brendan
isaac - January 16, 2006 12:49 PM (GMT)
mine also cheaplak one
but edi cost me RM50 ..
heart pain ...
it just protect the card from bending n that all .. so sad lar :(
Adrian Khoo - January 16, 2006 01:24 PM (GMT)
oh ya... isaac.. the porper clip acts like a card press... keep ur card real flat on both sides. something like having many heavy books on ur deck...that is how it restores ur card... else for the normal wan, it will hold the card in the case but wont apply much and also even pressure to the deck because of the right angle design of the clips back bone...
ps: i don even know wat im talking about... haha
Andy - January 16, 2006 02:29 PM (GMT)
The normal Card Guard (aka Stainless Steel one) mainly exerts pressure to the deck near its spine. The pressure is not evenly distributed and hence, your deck, despite leaving it inside overnight might still be slightly warped in the morn.
In addition, The edges are actually quite sharp and can scratch you when you are attempting to take out the deck - that is if you are not careful (like me :( ). It would also damage the box.
Furthermore, as the spine of the metal clip is straight, you will notice that the plates which covers your deck when you place it into the clip, is focusd outwards. This means that like what i mentioned earlier, only the portion of the deck closer to the spine of the clip will have pressure. The rest of the deck will not have sufficient pressure.
For the proper clip, the price is extremely steep. For the price of one, you can buy up to maybe 2 or 3 stainless steel card guards off penguin :o . However having said that, it is really good!!!
The spine of the porper clip is not straight. Rather, the spine is curved inwards. Hence, when you place your deck in, this curved part is the limit and hence, you will not over-insert your deck and have difficulties taking it out later.
Having said this, depsite the curved spine, the proper clip is manufactured in such a way that your poker sized decks will still be covered fully by the clip.
In addition, due to this curved spine, the plates of the clip are focused inwards, meaning that pressure will be evenly distributed thru out the deck, keeping it in shape and preventing warping due to the atmosphere.
Finally, the surface of the porper is very smooth and the edges are well rounded to prevent cuts. Hence, the box of the deck will not be damaged.
Please note that i am not saying that the cheaper metal guards are useless. They stil get part of the work done. However, when it definitely pales in comparison with the porper B)
Hope this helps ^_^

Man.... i really want a porper but oh well... a normal card guard tt i have will do for me....
It does scratch my box though but WTH... i still have lots of bikes to slowly destroy them.....
think abt it.. the money u invest for decks is very lil actually.... eg... a deck may cost RM16 each... .but it last u a month.... or more.. depends... its only less than 50cents a day.
u can do so much with cards....
when they get old... just change la...
hehe.. i used to be v careful and heart pain when cards gets dirty... but now... WTH man....
Normally for meetings, i wont bring a deck i wont want for it to get dirty. I'lll bring a deck which i know its ok if it gets dirty etc. Also i bring more than 3 decks... i switch them around after some time...
Ill also ways bring my card guard.
Tat's me... ;)

Isaac,
Alright, here's the hint, you riffle the edge of the cards, the spectator stops you anywhere, and at this point you already know the card.
That's P**king technique. ;)
Got it?!??!?
If you interested, check out Jeff Pierce's book.
