Title: Lack Of Response In Entering Magic Competitions
Description: why the reluctance?

Paul Long - February 15, 2006 07:35 AM (GMT)
Hope this is the right place for this thread. Sorry if it is not ...

I need a brerak from my work, so just posting a threrad.

I was wondering why the response to enter the magic competitions advertised / proposed ... in other threads in this forum is so poor (almost non-existent if it would seem).

It is clear that there are many magic enthusiasts here and having some MMF people "perform", I know that some clearly have the skills. And from the many threads, some would seem to be "experts" in some areas yet ... shy away from taking the stage. So, why the reluctance?

BTW, please don't read between the lines and wonder if I am being sacarstic etc. Don't want a simple subject like this to become a flame war... :P

Some have hinted of dreams of doing magic professioanlly, or even semi-professionally but ....? And even for those of us (like myself) who wish to remain amatuers and do magic as a serious hobbyist, this does not seem to be a good enough reason for not wanting to enter a magic competition.

Check out other forums and it is clear that there are very young magicians who are not pros yet but have in their trophy cabinet lots of awards from magic competitions.

Just like many serious sports lover who may not want to go pro (as he / she knows he / she doesn;t make the cut) will still eagerly enter competitions to gain experience, win trophies etc.

And even some who are semi pros or pros (making their bread and butter from magic), why not enter and grab the top prize(s). (When I mention semi-pro and pro, I am not thinking of international class magicians who have already proven themselves - the prize money would be chicken feed and not worth their effort). Think ... along the lines of a local pro football league - can't ever hope of playing for Chelsea and making sterling 100 K a week but surely can play for local club and make a decent RM 6-8 K a month ... If magic is my bread and butter, I would enter .. even if the prize money is RM 1 K, that's still good money to aim for .

So, I wonder why that if some of us are as good as we claim to be from the way we talk, (or as others make us out to be by their praise of us ...) why the reluctance to take the stage?

Is it a lack of confidence?
Is it a lack of stage experience or public experience?
Is it a time factor?
What is it?

Ok, so why don't I enter?

1. Clearly not ready in terms of having a good routine. Present routines passable for amateur level but not original, not as focused as I think it should be.
2. Whatever I have (ie despite no.1 above) currently seems more appropriate for parlour than stage ...
3. High cost of props that would make the routine look professional

..... I have LOTS more reasons (some may say excuses  - that can be an area of discussion as well) but it wuld be nice to hear from others first or discussion might be one sided or just short one liner responses ... like "yeah, same here".

I am asking since most of us her who visit and post on this forum clearly want to promote the cause of magic and take the general Malaysian magic scene to a higher level. Perhaps is we could share the reasons, we might come up with a realistic solution? Or at least, we will have a better understanding of the matter and be able to focus on what we want to achieve, what we lack and the steps we need to get there ...

Over to you ... ^_^

I think this is better suited here, so i moved it.

anyways

My reasons :-

all the same reasons as you.

plus, I don't like competitions.
Maybe its because I kiasu (don't like losing) :ph43r:
Or maybe its because I don't like being competitive (brings out my ugly side)
Or maybe I'm just not good enough.
I'm too lazy.
The cold hard truth is all of the above I guess.

In short I want to perform, but not to compete.

I have more reasons ... like...

1. still working on my "stage atttire" - coat? casual (but casual can be so un professional looking.

2. haven't practiced enough on something I like ... ie. tried something I like and bombed before on stage, so have to work out the kinks ...

still got more ... but another time ... ;)
