Title: Help...
Description: Someone who knows nothing knows it !

Jabz - February 26, 2006 08:13 AM (GMT)
Hey ! (sorry for posting this here but i need help quick)
First of all, I would want to know who is from Miri...

The main reason why I posted this is at the bottom of this post.

Ok... I know somebody who likes magic but has no talent in it !
He can't keep the secret, perform, flourish and misdirect.

One day he performed a magic trick to some girls at school which uses the DL, he was then caught for doing the DL so the trick was spoilt...
After that he asked me to perform the trick for him, I was like BullS***, "He just exposed the DL (the main secret for the trick) and expects me to perform it".

He also bought some tricks from me and performed it to his frens and his brother which was once in front of me. One of his frens managed to figure out the trick because his performance was bad !.... Because his fren managed to expose the trick he decided to tell his brother how to do the trick and His brother is not a magician !!!!!

When he practices, it is also really BAD, when he practices he is not patient, even when he is not good at the trick yet he will just perform... He fingers are clumsy too. Once he performed a card palming trick and a DL trick to me, it was so obvious but he tought he was good at it !

There are still so many dumb things about him in the "stages of magic" if i were to tell you all of it would *** *****.

HERE IS THE MAIN THING I WANNA TELL !!!
He has just found a website to get magic for free which has a number of tricks from penguinmagic.com and downloadmagic.com (i heard penguinmagic.com are fakers but their tricks are still great !), so I wanna know how can I stop him because he will affect or destroy 70% of the tricks I know and so as the magic tricks you know...

Thanks if you have help !

First of all I think you should follow the forum rules.
Kidding: Now I can imagine how bad is you friend.

You can not do anything to stop him.
Kidding: Blame yourself for selling off the secret. B)

DL is part of sleight of hand and can perform several way.
[Now a day a lot people know DL, don't think that your audience never see magic before]

Not need to care how others are performing. Showmanship is the important part.
Pratice hard and do the best you can to your audience.

Jeff Gan - February 27, 2006 02:24 AM (GMT)
Jabz,

I'd suggest you have a good talk with him. Teach him about the importance of getting it down by practising again and again before he even attempts to show laymen. Ask him to show it to you...then correct him if he is wrong. Whats so wrong about showing him how a DL is done? If he gets it rights, the chance for exposure to happen through his bad performance is low and you don't have to worry so much about someone exposing magic. What you'd have is just more competition...but at least no exposure.

Teach him about the ethics. You sold him some tricks in the first place, so i think you played a small part in this in the first place.

and think twice before you feel like teaching anyone again.

Aloy - February 27, 2006 05:30 AM (GMT)
Stab him with a pencil. ^_^ Between his 3rd and 4th rib ^_^

Or.....

You gotta show him what is acceptable standard if you think his standard is really bad. Because if he has no contact with other magicians, he has no way of gauging himself as ready to perform or not, and he will surely do.

I think there's a few Miri people around in here (?), maybe you all can meet up and ask this guy along and jam a bit?
Then if he don't change at least you all can gang up on him. B)

Why should I not sell the secret when he was so focused in magic but attually was not talented.

By thw way if I were not to sell the trick to him he could easily ask his father to get it from him.

I know showmanship is the important part, but how can I show magic to audience if he has already spoilt the trick. (Soon the whole of miri will know the trick "i think.) And if people knoe the tricks i will not have any tricks to show.

Yes I know many people knows about the DL. but for example, if a great card trick uses the DL and the spec. manages to catch the magician doing the DL the trick will be spoit rite ?

Many card trick such as the s*** c***** uses the DL.

if someone knew a powerful trick uses the DL would it still be powerful for that person?

isaac - February 27, 2006 06:15 AM (GMT)
watever izit .. spectator can know every single sleight in the world ..
but if you are a good and come with the charisma n showmanship ..
people will still sit back and enjoy your show ..

is just personal observation ..
you can be good in sleight but somehow u r terrible in presentation ..
u r a bad magician ..

if u can b ok ok in sleight but good in performance and showmanship
ppl still consider u a good magician ...

DL is just one sleight .. there r many different sleight to replace DL ..
T** Ch**ge, Sec**** D***, P**s ...
u got to explore and find replacement n learn new tricks lor ..
do mind reading n PK .. float something ..
make them believe u can do magic ..
then u blow them again with ur powerful DL trick ..
trust me .. it will work :)

Clement Josos - February 27, 2006 08:16 AM (GMT)
Jabz,

I don't think your friend is not talented, just lazy. I'm sure he can master the sleights if given enough time. Nobody is not talented, just everybody have their own pace and your friend just doesn't realize that.

Teach him the right way. Be his mentor. Don't 'lepas tangan' after u sold the tricks. You've seen the consequences...

Lots o people know bout DL, but if your showmanship is good they won't even know that u used it. Do a f***e s*****e maybe to confuse them. Change with other sleights. It's the effects that matters in the end, not how good your sleight is.

David Loh - February 27, 2006 02:59 PM (GMT)
Hah!

I've been a mentor myself a few times and it didn't went well
either.

Some seem interested, but end up disrespecting magic cause
the secret behind it seemed too easy or "stupid" to them. Can't
handle the fact they once got fooled by something simple.

Then the next happy excited dude came along and i started
him with the p*ss sleight. well.. he gave up card magic, infact
magic all together.

So i guess for beginners.. they need passion, not curiosity.
Let them have a trick and if they do it well, help them along
the way. Else... well, stop there.

isaac - February 27, 2006 04:41 PM (GMT)
yup,
almost same situation with david loh

one guy actually is a mentor for 3of us..
then later on the other 2 end up b a heckler and did not respect the art of magic ..

and even the mentor himself gave up on magic
and all turn to heckler whenever i got a chance to perform in college ..
all will come n be the mr know it all ...

so somehow u got to b wise in choosing ppl to train
give them some simple trick .. teach them like gl*d* or some simple sleight n do not teach them till they master the simple trick.
this is a very easy way to see their commitment in magic ...

Andrew Loh - February 28, 2006 01:50 AM (GMT)
Hey, just like Brad Christian said "Stop your performance and run out from there" if you meet any hecklers! Because you will end up in BIG TROUBLE!

Hmmm...... Yeah, I am agree with that!

How do you propose to "stop" him?

poke him with a pencil and hope he dies? (wink wink Aloy)

So you were a bad teacher
Your student sucked and now you wanna disassociate yourself from him..
and you wanna "stop" him...
You'll probably end up cutting off his legs and letting him burn in the lava pits...

Turned into a bad magician your student has...

Deja Vu??

Like I said in my earlier post, talk to him. If you don't, and he continues doing bad magic, you fear you will lose your audiences. And magic will lose its value.
And we'll call you Valentino...just joking :P

Or Obiwan

sorry, I'm in a sarcastic mood...

Brendan Low - February 28, 2006 12:38 PM (GMT)
Its is important ho u choose to teach magic too...

teach one wrong guy this is what is going to happen.

Choose ya students well if u wanna be a mentor. And before u become a mentor, make sure u can teach well.

k.. going home now... Mondo magic tonite... 10pm.. hehe i wonder what's gonna happen tonite. hehe

CHeers,
Brendan

Andrew Loh - February 28, 2006 03:18 PM (GMT)
Yeah, sometimes to prevent things become worst, it would be better to escape from that spot rather than you continue on performing. Because you don't want at the end end up quarreling and the ppl have bad perception on you.

Some heckler I know normally "Males", I felt that they have some jealously which you entertain your female friends, etc. They jealous because they can't perform magic as entertaining as you. <_<

Andrew

Adlan - February 28, 2006 05:35 PM (GMT)
Don't give too much thought about it, dude. It would only mess up your mind, and that's MY job. haha.

Jabz - March 2, 2006 09:29 AM (GMT)
Atleast now I know that there are still people there being *heckled*...

I know that I should try to do something, so I tried doing something.
I said can you keep the tricks as secrets and practice alot... He said yes.
Then I said where are you going to save your tricks from the website you found, he said in my comp...

So I said do you have your own account in your comp, he said no...
So I said what if your brother (who is not a magician sees it), he said my brother can keep secrets and he will never show magic because he is scared of me...
So I said what if your brother is away from you surely he will perform it disappointingly because magic is great a unrissistable to try on, he said I don't mind....

BUT I MIND !!!! because I'm a great fan of penguinmagic.com tricks even if some people dislike that website... (I spent alot of time figuring tricks and spending money on that website, so I don't wanna make a waste of all the penguinmagic.com tricks I know.)

Dont just learn TRICK,learn sleight and apply own creativity. Then you wont have problem like "I don't wanna make a waste of all the penguinmagic.com tricks I know"

Jabz - March 4, 2006 02:03 AM (GMT)

Jarrett Goh - March 30, 2006 11:41 AM (GMT)
