haha... i ask you... you ask forum...
Isaac and Sukyi, here's some info.
Black tigers, ghosts and vipers are created by magicians for magicians and as you noticed they are a spin-offs from the Bicycles.
Bicycles were not created for magic purposes - they have been in the market for a long time and have gone through back designs changes more than 80 times.
Some of the back designs are created to commemorate certain events - hence the changes in designs after each run (productions).
In western cultures there are so many events happening everywhere every year - so from a marketing point of view, some big companies took advantage of those events and new designs emerges.
On top of that there are also many big playing cards manufacturers from all over the world that keep on coming out with new back designs - so it is hard for the lay public without any historical knowledge about cards to wonder why certain back designs emerges.
As a playing card collector myself I am also trying hard to catch up with these historical info.
Anyway I will be putting up a website on the history of playing cards so you guys/gals will be more informed of the playing cards world.
One thing to note is that certain playing cards manufacturer such as USPC, Carta Mundi, Piatnik, etc use excellent card stocks for their playing cards - you can use them for flourishes, fanning, closeup, stage, etc. That's why magicians use them - so when one magician uses one particular brand another follows - that's how you get to hear the names of different brands and back designs.
There's no right or wrong playing cards to use - it is very subjective and it depends on each person's preferences and likings.
Hope this little piece of info enlightened both of you.
