Jeff Gan - March 30, 2006 06:15 AM (GMT)
fellow MMF forumite David Lai's in the newspapers again :) sweet

hey David,

mentalist doing fluorishes?

read the article here

although I think this article will be online for a short while only

Brendan Low - March 30, 2006 09:32 AM (GMT)
hehe cool lol...

David Lai :)

Mentalist now eh? cool :)

Yeah I loved his signature spoon bending effect. Really blew me away last time lol.

Jeff Gan, the pic was a card spring... v basic flourish. Most magicians should be able to do it. :).

I used to do it the way he does (spring forward), now backwards. Lol... both giving a different look.

David, looking forward to meeting u again one of these days.

Meanwhile keep on going! Good to hear u doing well bro.

Cheers,
Brendan

Jarrett Goh - March 30, 2006 10:51 AM (GMT)

David Lai - March 30, 2006 07:27 PM (GMT)
Thxs for the nice words.before I start,a warning for fellow magicians,do not EVER let the reporters put ur hp number on ur article if you ever get an interview. My phone has been ringing for the whole day from all types of people. Some of the weirdest are-

Caller : Hie,this is Miss **** here,My grandmother just passed away.I`m
wondering whether you can communicate with her soul through external forces.(This is so crappy I couldn`t even laugh)

Some calls were just as bad, like a father asking me to tutor his 3 year old son magic....!!!Ask him to learn maths 1st for goodness sake.I`m super streesed today from the calls. Not mentioning one 15 year old guy keeps on calling and talking about solutions that seem rediculous enough to spoon bending. If I`m using devine intervention to bend spoons,it`d rather use the `SIMPLER' ways .Emails are another fuss, suddenly I`ve been getting e-mails like crazy asking for tuition classes from children to grandparents......

I did quite a number of articles for National newspapers already, but this is just CRAZEEE!It`s 3am and just 20 mins ago I still received a msg from some dude who begs me to teach him how to levitate to amaze his ex-gf to get her back!!!???

Anyway enough of my frustration..........fuuh.I`m off to bed. Will be handing in a proposal to media prima soon on a local tv special.Filiming it in Perak.Sorry to not be here for so long.Anyways I`m back for good,at last settled my internet conection at my University.

David

About the question mentalist doing flourishes, this is the skinny

I was just back performing for a beach party in Melacca,P.D.The reporter called me up,and after Melacca I straight away headed for The STAR in Damansara.I brought all my mentalism props and stuff....spoons,Free Will, every peek wallet you can think off, bended keys, bended nails,( I wanted to do Icarus but levitation on camera...?)...Shocking....etc

Now,when the photographer came....what on earth is she going to take?(yes it was a she).Wallets with billet indexes and words written on name cards?I wanted to do `shocking' but how is the photographer going to take someone who is mildly shocked by electricity?...........The spoons, keys, and nails were already done by my good friend ROBIN from MTR so i din`t want a copy cat image(he did an inteview for some magazines and some papers on bending effects)....what was I left???I shook my head, gathered up my cards, did some card productions,MANY MANY MANY MANY HOT SHOTS to get a card above my head, springing of the cards and a double split which din`t make it.My image was potrayed waaay wrongly.Anyways you can see some of my performance pics at my fster, ill upload the latest of me performing for Gurmit Singh,Japanese Gts,MTVs Pimp My Ride,Juwita Suwito..etc in a few days.Have a magical day.......ZZZzzzz,bui yen where are you???were suppose to see Ice age together!!I`m single again!!

Jeff Gan - March 31, 2006 01:19 AM (GMT)
great to have you back dude. ;)

Jarrett Goh - March 31, 2006 04:49 AM (GMT)
If I'm ever gonna be as famous as you.I'll definitely listen to your advice.Dont give phone number to the news or you'll get the most crappy question ever. These are the question many of my friends ask and all I always say to them is cut the ****ing crap got it?

hehe LOL....

yeah i get what ya mean. Normally a non flourisher magician would not have much to pose for a pic (static). The common ones are thumb fan and just holding up a card.

But yeah ya card spring was good. Nicely captured.

Would be great if the Hot shot is taken. U need a good cam for that though lol... the one that takes a few shot at a time.

I guess if they take u doing some displays some crazy flourishes, then they may get the wrong impression of u. U are a magician/mentalist. Not a cardician or cardist.

So yeah.... its a different game all together.

David, will u be in KL this sunday? Im going up for the lecture... perhaps can meet?

David Lai - March 31, 2006 05:10 AM (GMT)
You mean Erik`s lecture.Met him yesterday and he completely floored me.I say completely.I was like a kid,his mentalism and card magic was FISM standard. He lectured me allright, lectured me good.I`m not going, going off to Perak on Sat eaaaarly morning.I`m still thiking whether this guy posseses ghost or something. He was really that good.Damn.Imagine this, doing TRIUMPH with just a thought off card.N for you smart asses, the deck wasn`t marked, and he din`t look at the faces of the crads to find my card.Imagine this,I now know how he did it,but still am amaze!!Anyways, ask him what is the difference of Micheal jackson and Neil armstrong when you meet him.Oh wait, you go to church rite?Don`t ask him then.

Brendan Low - March 31, 2006 06:15 AM (GMT)
yeah... im looking forward to meeting him :P.

Apparently he has a DVD out in the market. I beleive he is gona teach us the tricks in there :P

Awesome... cant wait!

Difference between MJ and NA.... hmmm.... btw, arent u a christian yaself? LOL

Andrew Loh - March 31, 2006 07:29 AM (GMT)
Hi David,

It's good to see you again in the newspaper and in this forum. ;)

Thanks for sharing and I think I have to meet Erik and try to attend his lecture.

Andrew

bestnye masuk paper...!

Awesome dude.

Even more awesome that you approached Media Prima.

Just a little iddy-bitty suggestion though: RTM is presently looking for 'new blood' to invigorate its falling viewership. You might wanna try them too. Heck, even I got offered a job there!

David Lai - April 20, 2006 09:18 AM (GMT)
I`ll be doing a cover story interview for R.A.G.E STAR tom.R.A.G.E is only available through universities, schools and colleges in Malaysia and not your normal local newstands.I don`t know when would it be out,(probably in a week)but the writer said it`ll be front page.So those of you who are still studying, tell me if I missed it.hahaThis time----no more cards.period.

Forrest Lim - April 21, 2006 08:57 AM (GMT)
I wish someday I can be in front page too---The 1st Malaysian FISM winner...haha.....In Malaysia if you able to open say 10 shops, most of the time you'll get tons of interviews from local media. But it's not the case in U.S.

30210162 - April 25, 2006 10:19 AM (GMT)
good point forrest.

It seems there are two types of exposure.

David Blaine's stunts are generated from hype more than substance (not to say I can do his stuns lah).

Underground magicians thrive on secrecy to generate hype.

Jason Wong - May 13, 2006 09:55 AM (GMT)
oh wow...i didnt know that you are only 19 years old....maybe i should join the old dudes here in mmf lol..

the self levitation on to chairs abd road curbs, did u learn that from chris angle?

Lai ur real cool dude

David Lai - May 13, 2006 01:25 PM (GMT)
Icarus effect from Aaron Petersen.Cost me quite a bomb though.I`m not cool la brader.haha

Regards,
David Lai
