Title: Sharing Show Experience
Description: exp
David Lai - April 14, 2006 05:53 PM (GMT)
Today just did a show for the honourable Tun.Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir and his wife Tun,Datin Sei Dr. Siti Hasmah,25 UN ambasadors, local ministers and guest at Putrajaya. The show was OKkk,not super great but guest were entertained.
Did a peek routine involving a girl and her first kiss,
Did Deddy Corbuzier`s routine and used AF winner VINCE CHONG on stage,
and ended of with Mother of All Book Test to Mahathir himself. He picked the word WEIGHTLIFTER,haha
The show was comedy mentalism and I think I was ok....my perception is Mahathir has seen every mag in las vegas performing so what am I,....but it was a good show all in all.The crowd applauded greatly in the end.Just wasn`t really imprssed with myself....could have done much much betta, port mortening now.
Ignatius - April 14, 2006 06:39 PM (GMT)
Mahathir's fine with it then so am I. :P
JamesTong - April 14, 2006 07:00 PM (GMT)
FYI Dr Mahathir has seen all the magic performances from all the professional magicians in Malaysia. Because his tenure as the Prime Minister of M'sia had spanned a long long time and he had attended all major functions in the country - he would have seen every local magician performing.
And even now he continues to attend functions - so he would be seeing the performances of new magicians (younger generation) in the country.
He is a very sporting person - even when he is called onto the stage. He would play along with the game.
David, it is a good experience being able to perform in his presence and with him playing along with you.
Almost all magicians and entertainers like performing for him. All the stories I heard is amazing.
Jeff Gan - April 14, 2006 11:37 PM (GMT)
wow.
Its a great honor to do that performance.

The best part was this,my friend accidently called him SIR on stage then quickly changed it to TUN DR.Mahathir.Crazy man.Anyway,ya he was a good sport. For those of you who are in the know about Mother of ALL BOOK TEST,which I did as the finale,DR.M played along the whole routine really well,if you know what I mean.Anyway it was a very good experience although I`m not too impressed myself about the show.Vince Chong from AF3 also performed with me,haha,as an instant stooge but nobody realised that. All in all,im tired, not really satisfied, thankful and preparing for my next show. This was the biggest crowd I did a mentalism show for,2000 over people, the biggest last time was about 1500.......it`s not easy man.I`ll post the pics soon in fster.Enjoyz.
David Lai - April 15, 2006 03:45 AM (GMT)
I`m guessing a lot of magicians have performed to him, maybe even he got to meet Uri Geller on 1 of his visits to US..........but mentalism in Malaysia?...im not too sure. :P

David Lai

Yes, perform magic for them is a nice experience. I performed on stage for Tan Sri Datuk Tiong Hiew King (Rimbunan Hijau Group chairman), Datuk Tiong Thai King (Sibu Municipal Council chairman), Datuk Tiong Su Kouk (The World Zhang Clan Association Limited chairman), and for Alex To Tak-Wai (popular male artist ) here in Hong Kong. I wasn’t very happy with my performances too but we learn from experiences and we all have things to work on… every professional have things to work on too. We always feel we can do better because we know what slight mistakes we made though they are not a concern to the audiences. ^_^
Jarrett Goh - April 15, 2006 04:19 AM (GMT)
WAH...WAH...WAH...  I only remember seeing Tun Dr.Mahathir at Bukit Jalil stadium when Man Utd was playing against Malaysia.Well, you know the results.
David Lai - April 15, 2006 04:35 AM (GMT)
Hezs Jeff cool, saw ur pics.I`m very bad at mandarin so I can`t do shows for chinese parties.haha.Tried it once, disaster.
Jarrett Goh - April 15, 2006 05:09 AM (GMT)
Me too,I speak perfect english.Horrible mandarin.
JamesTong - April 15, 2006 08:06 AM (GMT)
Do a silent act that is choreographed well with good music - and you have no problem with languages.
Jarrett Goh - April 15, 2006 09:43 AM (GMT)
But how if you're doing table hopping at restaurants?I have these trouble sometimes
David Lai - April 15, 2006 10:13 AM (GMT)
Silent act is just not my thing but James I`m sure you hella good at it.=).I`ll be performing for the Prime Minister in mid-August again in the Chancellor Hall of Perak for a CONVO.This time,im going to be fully prepared, don`t want to go back with a heavy feeling again. In my honest OPINION,the show that day for DR.M,was below par.It was good show if the audienece was normal lay people, but for a person of his standards, the show should have been so much better. He is the EX-PM anyways.I put my hats off to Tun Siti Hasmah for telling me it was an interesting show.I knew she was just doing it to make me feel happy but she was ToO kind.=).

David Lai

If you are working at restaurant magic - then you have no choice but to communicate in whatever languages the clients of that restaurant is using.
Jarrett Goh - April 15, 2006 10:42 AM (GMT)
JamesTong - April 15, 2006 10:49 AM (GMT)
The worst thing that can happen to a magician is when he is contracted for a performance and finds out that he/she cannot communicate in the language of the clients at the performance venue - and the magician is only prepared for a patter act.
Sometimes you never know what language the people at the performance venue speaks until you reach there.
So it is better to be prepared ...
1) Have a silent act ready for any sort of event
2) Find out first what language the people speaks.
Funny example but it could happen to anyone of us ...
The chief of a very big village in East Malaysia request you to perform (and it happens that he has a good sponsor - so no problem with paying you a good fee). And you did not find out who you are performing to - so when you reach there you found out that the 500 audience are Kadazans (or Dayaks, etc) and speaks only their native language. No one except the chief understands the English language.
In this scenario - you are paid a very high professional fee but you don't speak the native language of the audience there. What would you do?
What if they offer to double your fee so you can do table hopping/restaurant magic as well? But you don't speak their native language ... what would you do?
My answer to this scenario is ... be prepared for any or all situations.
I got caught many times before. Luckily I had my silent act.
BTW did you know that you can perform to music (silent act) on close up too?
There's no harm being prepared, right?
David Lai - April 15, 2006 10:59 AM (GMT)
I agree, was caught a number of times where the audience couldn`t converse in ENGLISH.This was during my earlier days of performing. Now I always make sure I know what language the audience converse in before accepting a show.If it`s not ENG or Malay, too bad,I don`t have the ability to do it at current times.I`ll have to decline no matter how good the pay, that is a total disadvantage. The 1st time I encountered this problem was when I was 16,performed for a CHINESE siciety, did the `VANISHING BANDANA' act by David Copperfield.......For those of you who know the routine, they couldn`t differentiate a bandana and a banana.END!
David Lai - April 15, 2006 11:04 AM (GMT)
For restaurant magic, which I do alot during my break(for the wrong reasons, haha, some of you might not get what i mean),I do sponge balls, metal bending effects, and vanishing effects......Cmon man,if you can`t even say `Ni Kan,ni kan'.(you look, you look,)or saying close your hands, with your mother tongue, thats`ll be crazee man.Anyways, thats what I do if I encounter people who don`t converse in BM or ENG.`Ni hou,ni you kan moosu ma?'..........haha,for stage,I don`t do it,even if was for ONG KA TING,I`ll simply make a fool out of myself.
Jarrett Goh - April 15, 2006 12:11 PM (GMT)
I seriously almost dont know anything about chinese.I speak chinese worser than a westerner(caucasian) speaking.
JamesTong - April 15, 2006 07:49 PM (GMT)
I'm not a chinese, Jarrett - I'm a Malaysian who happens to be not so good in the chinese language
Anyway I am now forcing myself to take up a few other languages including chinese too. It is just a matter of how serious we are. So in this case I will make time to take up a few more languages.
Currently I speak about 9 languages B) - and that includes UK english, US english, Canadian english, Australian english, New Zealand english, Hong Kong english, Japanese english, Malaysian english (manglish), Singapore english (singlish) - what an achievement, isn't it. :!!: Now that's a M'sia Boleh record  :D
Jarrett Goh - April 16, 2006 12:08 AM (GMT)
Amazing achievement! Wonderful! :P tells me why you're so good at UK english, US english, Canadian english, Australian english, New Zealand english, Hong Kong english, Japanese english, Malaysian english (manglish), Singapore english.A strong cimbination of foreign accents while he talks.haha

Jarrett Goh - April 17, 2006 02:59 AM (GMT)
Awesome,you met Vince,and ex-PM...omg
David Lai - April 18, 2006 10:09 AM (GMT)
cRap,just as James said it happened. The minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Sharizat asked me to do a show for her. It`ll be most probably in Malay to cater for the crowd and the atmospere of the function..............there goes my mentalism act.OMG!Don`t know whether or not to take it.And the show is next week,no time to prepare a new act.woah.
Regards,
David Lai
Jeff Gan - April 18, 2006 10:34 AM (GMT)
whoa, mentalism in malay.
"ok, pikirkan satu corak, bintang, segiempat, bulatan, pangkah atau garisan garisan bengkok bengkok"
David Lai - April 18, 2006 10:52 AM (GMT)
After what you said Jeff, most probably going to decline.haha.If I did a tossed out deck routine, the patter would be hilarious!
Tolong (I don`t know what is riffle to a card in malay) kocek dengan ibu jari anda timbunan kad-kad ini hanya kepada satu kad sahaja.Ingat, hanya satu kad, jika anda terlepas, mungkin fikiran anda akan bercelaru.Baik, tolong buang kad-kad ini kepada seorang lagi penonton. No!No!bukan BUANG,pass la,pass!
I`m thiking about a suitable routine,a malay book test, metal bending,a picture duplication.Well thank GOD my BM masih boleh pakai sikit.I don`t think the ministers will mind abt me speaking english,it`s the audience who are almost 100% malay.
Regards,
David Lai

The Star online...normally they only update at night for the day's news... by the way.. because our college the star is a bit different, they normally send us with the "RAGE" section in front of the pages..so, straight away i could see the word "Abracadabra" with someone's face on the big page, then I tell myself this outh to be good about our own magician in the local scene...well....its David Lai's face on our front page...Well, what do you know... Its our fellow MMF dude...this is a really big contribution you have made to our own local magic scene....especially in mentalism... congratz to you... :)
ok..i think I am off topic of this thread....huhuhuhu!
