Samuel Chong - May 2, 2006 03:04 PM (GMT)

Nothing revealed much.
Jeff Gan - May 3, 2006 12:14 AM (GMT)
the way he did the ahem "time machine" ....funny
Paul Long - May 3, 2006 03:05 AM (GMT)
when will it be on again? Missed it and would like to see it again -
Though I remember seeing it a few years back (same show I presume)
If I remember correctly some of the secrets revealed, I don't think it won't really affect most of us that much ... after all, how many of us have pigeons or doves that we can use with a twisting off a dove's head gimmick, or will go though the trouble (and hassle as timing will be maddening) to catch files, freeze them and then bring them back to life?
And as for some of the card tricks ... even if revealed, my question would be - can the lay person do it? I did the basic colour card change recently and one wise guy said that he knew how it was done.... blah blah blah .. that he knew how I switched the cards. He didn't see it of course. It was annoying as others were enjoying the effect (and remember I am lousy at card sleights - can't do a decent DL so i don't even use a DL - at least not yet  ) Anyway, I just smiled, looked at him and said - of course I switched cards - how else would the card change colour, and then offered him the deck and asked politely whether he would like to do it for everyone. Of course he backed down with something to the effect of "I know how it is done but I can't do it". I proceeded with a short "lecture" (as he was a youth) that such magic tricks are for entertainment and I do some of these things so we all can enjoy the magic.. . and not to spoil it for others .. and that this is why many magicians just don't like to perform for free as some people just spoil the whole atmosphere.
I know what I did may sound a bit mean to some of you but he got the point. <_< Point is, I didn't look bad - he did as there is a difference in knowing how something is done and being able to do it. (Please note that in no way did I humiliate him etc).
For totally self-working stuff, maybe some people can scoff etc because they know how it is done, and with the right props might be able to do it but for the effects that also require skill, you will still be respected even if they know how it is done.
BTW, a couple of youth later "almost begged" me to teach them a few card tricks and sleights as the whole art fascinated them, eventhough I made it clear that cards isn't my thing and I am still a novice. One said that he would practice and prove to me he was serious about learning, as I told him that magicians never reveal anything for the sake of revealing as non serious people who just want to know the secrets make a mess of things and spoil everything for serious magicians.

ChongWei - May 3, 2006 05:58 AM (GMT)

Brendan Low - May 3, 2006 12:27 PM (GMT)
A fren sms me last nite regarding this.. but i was abt to go to sleep.
I now only found out its the masked magician street magic that was screened.
Hmm.. yeah my reaction is like Andrew's....."huh? Not again!"
But then again.... it was this show that got me into magic 3 yrs ago! LOL.... (so.... hmmm)
still i wish they dont show it again...
But like JEUZE said, these tricks are old tricks... there're better tricks to do.
But then again.. its not abt wat tricks are being exposed. But it is the secret abt magic being exposed. DL and various sleights exposed! sigh.
I wont let this show trouble me. People still get shocked when i do 2CM to them etc. Not everyone in msia tune in for this show so... dont let it disappoint you. :P

Perhaps recognition? It's stupid and unethical to reveal magic secrets to the wrong people. Or perhaps he is not a magician afterall which he thought that magic is only a mere tricks and cheating, so he would like to reveal opr educate the secrets so that next time no other magicians can be smart alec to do trick to entertain laymen anymore.

damn! Guess the masked magicians should be responsible for taking out the interest from laymen watching magicians performing magic. I ever met spectator's and they were just guessing that I am using DL...well, after all that I have to show them something that do not use DL a lot...I am force to master new pass and some new sleights especially Olmac's control...at least proving them wrong that I did not use DL... and now they still wondering how did I do that...even the double undercut can amaze them...huhuhu! But still...if the masked magician reveals all the complicated sleights, we all will be doomed...no more magic in the spectator's eyes. Perhaps all of us should minimize the use of DL coz some spectator are challenged to reveal our techniques.
The internet also should be blame too coz laymen who have the intentions to learn about the secrets and wanted to reveal how it is done can easily find through the internet... like recently, I have found a hugh database of magic effects and methods from a forum without the need to register or login... I believe some of you will never have ehard of the effects... it contains more than 40 pdf files which is stricty for magicians only...and I have found several files containing some interviews with famous magicians...and what I found really surprised me...
SO, we could not blame the masked magician coz it is the leak in information and how easy it was to gain such information through the internet... again, this is more to internet security matters that magician need to learn before publishing them through the internet securely... But then...the masked magician should not call himself the masked magician only...he should called himself the "masked magician secret revealer"...

FOX TV´s Exposé
He who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed.
- Albert Einstein
I just finished watching "Secrets of Street Magic Revealed" by FOX TV. As you probably suspect, I am upset and disheartened by the airing of this show. As a fellow magician I think that I speak the collective opinion that this show is a disaster for all close-up workers.
It is akin to a grand heckler. Sure we all put up with those that try to find fame in discrediting magic, but one should distinguish between the good-natured and misguided personalities of these people and FOX TV. Fox did it for one reason, and one reason only, namely money.
The magic world was shocked by the success of David Blaine´s special. It was a refreshing look at magic from outside of the normal perspective. The criticisms of Blaine by other magicians are all of a technical manner, i.e. his routines were mostly store bought and lacked ingenuity - but to give credit where credit is due one must admit that Blaine got it right. He brought the magic to the people. His impromptu act was magic in its most beautiful form - magic done right before people´s noses.
The only real fault by Blaine was his use of post-editing. He should not have used camera tricks at all - the beauty of the illusion is not diminished without camera edits but the magical tradition is very much slighted by the use of them. From now on all magic on television is open to the charge of camera trickery. That is a true shame.
Fox tries the ultimate mis-direction with their script. They turn the benevolent entertainment of street magic into something akin to Voodoo worship. In their closing line, "So the next time somebody tells you that they have magical abilities you´ll know how it´s done. And if somebody actually does we would like to meet them," one can see the overt hostile attitude of Fox. It is as if the magician is evil. This is their justification for the special, or at least it tries to justify the special, because it portrays magicians as people who lie and use trickery and therefore must be bad people.
The truth of the matter is that magic is one of the purest arts around. It requires a lot of skill and many long hours of practice. At its most simplistic magic is done to entertain, but it reaches much further than that. Magic empowers the audience to believe what should not be and to engage in wonderment at the world. Magic for entertainment is not uesd to defraud people, nor do we harm our audience in any way.
At it´s heart magic is an implicit contract. It is a contract between the magician and the audience. He agrees to practice diligently in order to amaze the audience and the audience agrees to suspend reality for a short time. It is this two-way street that makes magic the awe inspiring gift that it is. Magic is perfect symbiosis - neither side is harmed in any way.
Exposing the beauty of the trick is equal to robbing a child of the idea of Santa Claus. In deciding the merits of going through life knowing how it is done, or amazed at the idea that it can be done ... ask yourself whether you would rather have a world full of wonder and imagination, or a world with no Santa Claus.

this sucks! first they reveal the secrets to magic on STARWORLD!(probably one of the most watched english tv stations in m'sia) and then!!!!... NO SANTA!!! :'(
Emmanuel - May 6, 2006 02:32 AM (GMT)
Don't care about the masked magician who reveals the secret... magician nowadays getting better and better...the more he reveals... the other magicians will get better and better, figuring out new ways of doing magic...improving methods and props and performance... more magic secrets will be kept confidential and will lead to stronger secrecy. By the way, Santa is still a real person...he is a saint actually...he is St. Nicholas... in North American started to named him Santa Claus and the legend continues... :)
http://www.the-north-pole.com/history/index.htmSanta does exist.... and masked magician is the sucker... huhuhu!
