Bostik blue tack, make sure you get bostik brand.Dont get those china made, lousy blue tacks, they're very hard to handle, and too sticky.Bostik is still the closest to magician wax,and the best as far I've ever experienced blue tacks. They're cheap and they gives lots.

Depends on usage. What do you need wax for? IT? Sticking cards to windows? Or freaking people out because dirty wax looks like the crap that comes outta your nose?
IT : A good clear-finish double sided tape. Cheap and efficient, easy to handle.
Sticking stuff to windows : I dunno much about this, but I've tried cooked rice before, works just fine.
Fake boogers (tahi hidung) : Magicians Wax is still the best. I do this all the time, roll a small piece of wax on some newspaper so it collects some ink, then stick in on someones shirt. ^_^

Besides dental wax, you can try out ear wax (that's what Marc DeSouza uses).
You can even try to make the magician wax by yourself. Check out Dan Turcotte's The Card To Ceiling PDF (http://youdomagic.com/), he teaches you how to do it.
To save time & all troublesome, I would recommend you to buy a real magician wax from Roy (http://themagicannexe.com/home.htm).
