Title: Performing

Ileana - July 27, 2006 04:51 AM (GMT)
I have always wanted to take my magic to the next level by performing for strangers. But everytime I try to, I just chicken out. How do you guys go about this ? Perhaps you could share some of your experiences or give me some tips to go about doing it

Try to find a reason why you wanna perform to them. Such as "hey that's a pretty hot chick" or "I have practiced NFW over and over again in front of camera and my confidante, let's see if a REAL spectator will actually say NFW after seeing this trick". That way you'd have a motivation to not chicken out. It worked for me, so you could try it out.

Always approach someone by greeting him and making friends with him first.Ask him how are you? What's your name, etc. Then introduce yourself. When you have make friends with him, then your anxiousness will just dissapear because he is now your friend. You will have a feeling you're performing for someone you have known for sometime.

After the first time you perform, you wouldn't be very scared the next time.Good luck ^_^

Yes I know what you mean but I find it hard to approach someone, to talk to them it just seems so scary

When I first started magic... I always carry a deck of cards around in my pocket. I still do at times.. haha... even to office.. haha shhhh... :P

I guess what u can do is, perhaps get yaself known to ya frens that u love magic and love to perform. Ya frens will know and whenever there's the opportunity, just perform it.. dont be scared.

Normally ya frens will tell their friends abt u. This is particularly true at parties or functions. Its all entertainment sake. When that happens....eg "eh ICs.... u got bring ya cards or not ah? or eh... ICs show some magic... hey this guy can do some cool magic man... ICs.... do something"

At that time... u are already prepared.

As an opener... do the basic tricks and then slowly move to the more difficult ones.

As for approaching total stranger... well... for me... i'll get their attention first rather than going to them directly and asking u wanna see a trick? Basically my syle is i will do some simple flourish, people will look.... and when i ready.. i look back at them... smile and if i really want to.. "hey.. wanna see something interesting/magic"?

Like Jarret says... once u get ya first outside performance experience... it will be easier next time. It is normal for ya hands to shiver at times....good to warm up first..... hehe lol

All the best!
Cheers,
Brendan

its like pick up girls.. follow the 3 seconds rule! dont think about it.. just approach n open.. ;) if u think too much u will just blow it.. apporach instantly. ^_^

Well you must have a well structure routine that's well rehearsed to perform infront of strangers. your hand wont shiver that way. Create a routine, stick to it, practice it till you can perform the whole routine with patter blind folded.

want to see my routine?
LOL

go, do miser's dream from her ear, finale produce an Ace Of Heart, then patter should be: Man you got my heart.

Then bring out your fifty-two buddy and it's show time...I'll usually do card to pocket and ask her to take the card out.

Finale, it's best if you got star rubberbands
at least you got something to give her as sovenior. It depends on my mood. sometimes I'll do 3 cm and just give her the card as sovenior.

before you go, ask her to wirte her contact on a piece of paper, centre tear and burn the paper. You now got her contact and call her in 3 days later.

BTW I'm not a cassanova. I'm still single. i only tried mt routine twice and it works damn freaking well for me

Thanks guys. But I wonder why is it that your performances are aimed at girls ? Just kidding. Anyway, I plan to construct routines - 3 infact, varying perhaps between cards, coins and a rubberband trick. Ive wondered whether to include paperclipped as a finale but I cant seem to imagine it being performed surrounded. What do you guys think ?

KenophLai - July 28, 2006 09:26 AM (GMT)
if you can perform cards, coins and bands, why not just construct ONE routine using the three objects?

Audiences love variety.

* I performed my routine to guys also....just that i thought you were asking about how to perform for girls. Hey it's all because of the replies man... you guys midirected me~

Ileana - July 28, 2006 09:58 AM (GMT)
I am basically going to do 3 routines consisting 3 effects. But now Ill definitely insert variety in the performance. Im just afraid that if the audience wants to see some more Ill having nothing left to show them

3s the charm I guess

thanks

KenophLai - July 28, 2006 10:58 AM (GMT)
