Title: Addicted
KenophLai - July 30, 2006 03:21 AM (GMT)
few years ago i was addicted to coputer gaming and i couldnt stop gaming evn for a day. My result was severely affected but luckily i managed to kick it aside in the third year of my secondary school.
BUT now, i found myself to be in another addiction, and it's more serious than gaming, sooo serious that i couldn't stop thinking about it, and yes it's the addiction to magic.
I plan to study yesterday but i ended up creating a matrix effect. Almost every three days i learn a new effect/ i resructure my routine. HOLY that'll be cool if I'm a magician but I'm a student. I always wanted to place study as my 1st priority but it seems that i cant stop now.
It's not so cool to be an allrounder. And it's NOT FUN to be able to perform impromtu magic when you're a student. Man i could easily get distracted by a RUBBERBAND, A STRING, A RING,A COIN, and the worst thing is, i can get distracted even by a PEN.
It'not fun
Guys any suggestion to stop the addiction? I dun want to stop magic but i just want myself to be ale to concentrate on my study as well. Any suggestion?

You know I put off magic for 2 years because I wanted to focus on school. It may be hard for you but you might have to really set your prorities right. Perhaps you could put all your magic stuff in a box when you study and after you finish you can take them out again. Thats what I did and it worked.
If its really bad ask your mom to keep the stuff away from you until you've finished studying for the day. Sorry I can't offer you any advice on keeping the coins and rubberbands away... guess you just have to try not to get distracted
Hope it helps

Lai... i understand wat u mean.
I have the same addiction for cards. Once i get a hold of them... i spent v long time with them until i forget the time.
But I have somehow controlled my addiction to it.
I realised that the addiction actually took alot of my time away, my concentration, everything!
I am still a crazy cardist but I have learnt to discipline myself.
I used to feel so misaraeble when i dont play or touch my cards for 1 day. But now... i can miss a day or two without it and im fine w it.
I spend other times playing guitar, and watching movies, exercising (workout) etc etc. There's more to life than just magic. One has to know that!
Magic alone would not get you anywhere in life. Remember... magic is an addiction. It's up to you how you wanna control it.
My suggestion is limit yaself to 1-2hr max a day on magic.
Homework and studies comes first b4 u can start to play/practice ya magic.
Yups.. like Ics said.. put ya magic stuff away!!! store them away. Then the temptation wont be there everytime u go to ya room and see them. (LOL... my cards are nicely displayed in my see through cupboard... but... haha... it's norm already for me... decks everywhere in my room).
Ask yaself... why and real purpose for doing magic. Evaluate ya efficiency. Are you progressing much with magic? If after a 1 or 2 yrs and u still cant do proper sleights (in terms of cards sense) why do u bother practicing somemore? Better spend the time investing in other activities that'll benefit you more. I used to think.. wah with magic i can do and be anything! WRONG.... magic is just an extra thing in life. Im sure most of you have life other than magic.
Look, im not discouraging you people to love magic. i love it. It is just that I know I once was like super dupa crazy with magic and obsessed with cards, it kinda block me from doing other things. I was always online in various forums reading abt magic and practicing. So much to catch up with things.
Today.. I have kinda lost touch with many magic effect. I hardly know any new DVDs or books in magic. But I do keep myself super in touch with the flourish happenings around the world. But that slowly will die off too... now... im putting more time into other things like music, church, fellowship with frens etc etc. im happy that I have found a good balance that suits my lifestyle.
Well.. hope the things I said above help a lil. haha... im kinda tired now. time to go home... (nah... not to play cards... haha)
Cheers guys!

To be a professional player in any sport or magic.
There is a price to pay.
You want to be good, you need to spend your time on it.
Personally, I am a musician and once I am addicted to drumming.
But, one day when I walk to a studio.
I saw a very crazy drummer
yet he look like some ghost.
He didn't really bother how he look like.
All he knows and he talk is drum and drum and drum and more drum.
I just realize he have no life at all.
Well, I do not want my life to be that way.
Nothing extreme is good.
Set a goal on what you wanna achieve in study and magic.
Set a schedule and find a balance.
Small story to share with you.
Hope it will help.

That is exactly what happened to me last year. I was so much into it, I couldn't keep time anymore. My then gf had to hide my deck of cards and other magic apparatus in my final weeks of semester so I could keep focus on whatever I did. True, you'll be a much better magician (or any other thing you do) when you spent hours and hours practicing and performing. But the downside is that, sir, not only you're losing your life, you'll also lose so many other things along the way, mainly due to your neglection of other life-supporting activities (ya know, such as uhm hanging out with friends? Getting to know people? Do better at school?).
It is a rare case where a person can just focus on one thing throughout his life and actually pull it off e.g. Yngwie Malmsteen. All he did was just playing the guitar all his life, doing bad at school etc etc things that'd break you down and wonder if it really is "all worth it". But I believe if you could balance your life, or at least do the necessary things and put a proper appropriation for your magic, then it should be no problem.
I am in no way saying or concluding that anyone has to tone down their practice or anything, but remember kids, there's a big ass world out there ;)
