Title: Mnemonics
Jeff Gan - September 20, 2006 09:09 AM (GMT)
Anyone uses any form of mnemonics here?
I've heard only good stuff about Harry Lorayne's Memory Book.
I'd love to hear from you guys who use mnemonics in your daily life.
Trivia : Just in case you've been wondering, the memory guru Harry Lorayne is also the same guy as the magician Harry Lorayne.

hey Jeff,
There is another author I can recommend that is Tony Buzan. The titles are 'Use your memory' as well as 'Master you memory' are very good books to improve your recalling and memory skills, in terms of daily life or for memorising a deck of cards within 5minutes and go into a mentalism effect. Or memorising phone numbers.
Another book is Accelerated Learning for the 21st Century by Colin Rose and Malcoml J. Nicholl.
Harry Lorayne's book is also a very good book indeed especially for the advance level.
In the end, it still goes down to practice, such as magic, the more you practice the better you are at a specific tecnique. This goes the same as memory, the more you train yourself to remember things, the better your memory become.
Most people says that the older you are, the more forgetful you are, in truth the more you use your memory, and the older you get, provided you use your memory, the better it is.
Anyway memory training really takes a lot of brain juice and effort. :)

I know a friend who can memorises a deck of cards within 2 minutes. And the world record for memorising a deck of cards is 31.03 s by Ben Pridmore (Great Britain) 2006

Mnemonic vs rote...I use rote method in Aronson memorized deck. But soon realized that mnemonic really helps a lot not just in memorized deck but also contact numbers, date of important event like birthday...soon no need to use PDA or small notebook to keep track of important dates and events and etc. I have this book "mnemonica" by Juan Tamariz.....but since I am stuck with Aronson...i need to find a way to erase Aronson's stack from my head then i can think about memorizing a new deck. hehehe! So if you wanna go for deck memorization, it is better to study the features in the memorized deck first then go for it.
I found out people whoe use mnemonic method can memorize a deck within a week or two provided you really manage your time to do the memorization and work with the system well. Anyway, I am using rote method and i can only do in and outs of the memorized deck for up to a month. SO I guess it is a good way for you to start learning to use the mnemonic method. In the end its all just about the system of how well we relate things that we wanna memorize. Rote method really kill...so mnemonic, just go for it. At least with mnemonic, if you forgotten, it can be recovered by just finding out one small clue and then relate and recover the information.

Its not that hard to memorize a deck
on average.....3 hours maybe?
and yes I do believe that Tamariz stack is better than the Aronson one...
but thats just my choice
I do a lot of Aronson's tricks with the Tamariz deck anyway

I've never even tried to memorize a deck.
Stacks are cool. :P

True true
why make life hard for yourself....
laymen wouldn't appreciate the effort anyway....
Jeff Gan - September 22, 2006 12:15 AM (GMT)
the mnemonics you guys refere to Tamariz and Aronson, do they only apply to cards?
I'm refering to mnemonics for all uses...
I don't do cards and not interested in stacks.
Just general usage...in my work and life.

Wait, so mnemonics are like initials for words and stuff? i thought it was mind reading....
Oh well, that's what u get when u ask a cardist about mentalism stuff..... Though, mentalism is pretty awesome and breath-taking!
what is mnemonics anyway?
Jeff Gan - September 25, 2006 02:02 AM (GMT)
mnemonics are just methods of helping you remember stuff easier.
Its got not much to with magic, ...but it would definitely help. Eg. memorise a st**ked deck, doing preshow work...etc.
Darren - September 25, 2006 03:49 AM (GMT)
OOps..tat was abit embarrassing  Nolar i was referring to Jeff's "mnemonics in general usage" and gave tat example..not to do with magic & mentalism.. :D :D

The things you can accomplish with mnemonics are crazy... it goes beyond typical mentalism "pick a card and i know what it is".

I just wondering what is mnemonics. After get thru this entry, i think i get some idea about this.
Hm, in my opinion, this is a "clean" mentalism, rite? we really get through the remaining 51 cards to se what card has been selected. It is not "dirty" mentalism that use force or pre-arrange.
So, do you all here have your own records in mnemonics?
Me? I dont have any records. Hihihi.
