Title: Sucker Effects

Andrew Loh - March 30, 2005 07:22 AM (GMT)
Hi folks,

Do you folks like 'sucker' effects???

Yeah! I just found another effect in Bob Longe's book 'Easy Magic Tricks' namely 'A Five Spot' on page 80, spectator thought that you mess up everything, but yet this will make them laugh and maybe this effect can be added in 'comedy magic'. :)

Also Paul Wilson '13' book under the effect namely 'Punch Too', another yet powerful sucker effect!

Yes, by the way folks, do you like 'comedy magic'??? ^_^

one name: DAVID ACER!!

One hell of a funny Canadien.

Jay Sankey, at times, can be funny too.

Harry Allen has a book full of sucker gags, with stunts such as hitting a golf ball several hundred miles, and drinking from a glass underneath a hat, WITHOUT ever touching the hat. Really good stuff.

As for sucker effects, they're everywhere. Just add in an inconsistent twist to a normal routine, and right the wrong through a doing of magic, and voila! Sucker effect ;)

Saw Harry Allen at IF Magic 2005, erm, not sure if his style will go down well with asian audiences.

He was "wacking" one of the specs on stage and you can tell from the reaction of the audience that they were geniunely feeling uncomfortable and rooting for the spec.

WOAH! What was I thinking?!?!?!?

KEVIN MADE A BOO-BOO

I meant to say Harry Anderson, not Harry Allen. You know, the "needle through arm" dude. I musta been on intravenous drugs when I typed THAT :(

Brendan Low - April 20, 2005 09:25 AM (GMT)
bagus kah.. Jay sankey vol 3? saya hanya ada vol 2 saja.... hehe.... yeah... jay is a funny guy! quite creative too some of his effects!

abt asian audiences... welll ya... they surely aint like those westerners.... not all are supportive or give the reactions a magician may want. They may enjoy it but they may not like SCREAM or go running around... like wat u see on Blaines magic vids. lol

Jeff Gan - April 20, 2005 09:30 AM (GMT)
blaine doesnt get that kind of reactions all the time. he only shows you the best ones.

If i remember correctly in "mysterious stranger" he mentioned there was a coincidence of a truck driving by with the spectators dead mother's name on it that became one of his strongest reactions.

and yes, i like sankey vol 3

Hi folks,

Yes! Jay Sankey is a very creative guys in his effects.

I am surprised that there are many creative card magicians in Canada. Jay Sankey is one of the Canadians. ^_^

Scottish magicians also, I would rate them very creative in card magic. Popular names like Roy Walton, Alex Elmsley, Peter Duffie, Jerry Sadowitz, Stephen Tucker, the late Dave Campbell, etc.

What you guys think??? B)

sucker effects....
i think Paul Wilson did one in Hit the Road DVD....can't remember the name of the trick, but it's similar to one of the card tricks in his '13' book

Andrew Loh - May 4, 2005 01:18 AM (GMT)
Yeah! I think the name of the effect is 'Punch Too'.

I really like and enjoy performing this effect to laymen. :P

Although i never feel that its exactly necessary to sucker the audiences, i have 2 great recommendation for coin moves.

1) J. Bobo's Sucker Vanish

2) Spyder Vanish (Forgot the creator's name)

Both this vanishes are a great way to get ahead of audiences. However, use it carefully! The way of presentation must have the true drive of entertaintment and deviced to embaress your audiences. Sucker tricks are a great way of getting one step, even 2 steps ahead of audiences. Abuse of that would get you a punch in the eye. To keep things short, USE sucker tricks carefully.

There is a sucker effect at www.penguinmagic.com called a sucker is born every minute. ( how to lose frens and win money)

Sucker effects spiced with humour and/or comedy are accepted over this part of the world. If you want instantanous response, then you need to localised the patter and presentation and they will always be accepted.

Sucker effects with humour are my favourites. And they go well in close-ups and stage over here.

hmm i dont really have anything against Jay but some times he uses foul words?

if it was a kid that is trying to learn is it good?

or u guys think that its common thing in this era?

Neo - December 30, 2005 04:26 PM (GMT)

jay sankey was good but all of his new dvds are just a modyfied version of his old dvds..he also sell alots of his effects from his old dvds seperately and he have a major misunderstanding with penguinmagic and all his stuffs are being sold for very cheap price at penguins..go check it out guys not sure if there are stocks for now..anyway back to the point i think jay sankey is funny but he may get a lil too much lately..i prefer his old dvds like the one mentioned the very best of sankey vol 1,2 and 3..Bill Malone and Greg Wilson are also very funny..they are my favourite when it comes to entertaining!

A sucker effect doesn't always have to be "funny" or out of context, but it definitely has to be out of the ordinary from the normal course of the trick. A trick that many of you guys love called the 2 Card Monte is a sucker effect, because when done according to its premise, it's a monte effect. The spec basically tries to guess where the ace of club is from the two face down black aces, and the sucker is that there's no black aces, because the magician is holding them.

A sucker effect doesn't (always) mean an effect with a kicker. A color change of the card's back does not constitute a trick to be called a sucker effect.
