Title: I Get Angry At Times

Sebastian - October 27, 2006 12:43 PM (GMT)
hi guys, just want ur opinion on this one

i have purchased a couple of downloads from a couple of websites, especially from e and p.magic.

i was showing a friend of mine 'leaving home' by jay sankey, when i was done, he told me how i did it, as in literally told me HOW i did it. he said he saw the explaination of the trick on the internet. He said that he found out about it thru a fren of his who is not a magician. he gave me the website and when i went there, i saw that there was at least so many of the downloads of magic explainations posted by people from around the world. i was really shocked

i mean to say that we invest in this art to entertain, we spend alot of money so that others can be entertained, but if people continue to post up magic trick downloads, what will soon happen....I don't know............................................

Well.....
its true that there is a lot of exposure on the net nowadays
just search wikipedia
you'll be surprised
but then again, even though a laymen knows about a DL
if you do it well enough, he/she probably won't even notice
they think they know the trick because they have seen it elsewhere
change the patter and the presentation
they will think it's an entirely different trick
thats the psychology of magic
once in a while you may run into smart asses that kinda know a bit of magic (heckler)
and have the tendency to ruin your trick...
but thats life
just walk away~

nice reply amane...i completely agree...

an effect is mostly (in my opinion) made up of presentation and performance....just last night i was performing.....blew the socks off the spectators(maybe im exaggerating :P) but......this one guy was telling me about a bad presentation he saw recently....said the guy exposed something about DL's....this and that....but i did simple effects...yet due to how you hammer in the effect to a person....i managed to convert him to believing i had "Powers"....and i had to use a lot of "inner energy"...Priceless LOL

so what if the spectator knows the effect....change your presentation and performance.....see it as a challenge...in the end it will all be worth it.....

my two cents...

i just back from YWAM missions in KL.

Showed a few card tricks to a philipino missionary... she freaked out and she said i need deliverance...haha... it was hard to tell her it "hey..... its ok.... its not wat u think it is..."

I said "I made u see what u didnt see" etc etc... she just freaked out. "Sleight of hands.... its no magic k."

She freaked out especially on the 2CM.

I also performed to Kenyan Family... had awesome time with them. The kids.. wow... "Mr Magic".... hehe. It's their first time seeing magic done in real time, in front of their eyes.

Abt what Sebastian said... yeah... I was kinda sick abt that too but what can we do abt it? NOTHIN. We just have to live with it and like Amane suggested... change alil bit of the presentation and that might help. Besides.. i think only a small percentage of people know abt how to get these downloads etc etc. There are many people who have yet to see magic in this world. So dont worry.

I Agree with Amane, we do magic to entertain ppl, we put in effort/money/time so that others can enjoy this form of art, from time to time you will get this kinda of ppl who just wanna catch you, expose & are not open to appreciate it, just walk away with no excuse, its just not worth it.

This is my experience...

That time, i was at KFC with 3-4 friends. Then i show some magic (i don't remember). then, there was a friend (girl) who some kind of not apprciate about this magic. he has too many mouth.

because of bored to be treat like that, i stop my magic and continue my eating. the other friends fell sad. they ask me to continue but i'm not in mood. and the big mouth friend feel ashmed. and at last, he just shut his mouth when i'm continue my magic.

so, the conclusion is, if somebody try to do something stupid to distureb your presentation, then juz ignore him or stop your magic. this can ashame him.

or in malay if my english look stupid:

kalau ada orang yang cuba mengganggu persembahan magik kau orang, jangan dilayan orang itu atau berhenti buat magik. katakan sesuatu yang boleh buat penonton lain rasa terkilan dengan perangai orang ni. tentunya penonton yang seorang ni akan rasa malu sebab penonton lain ingin sangat menonton magik kau orang.hihihi

This think always happen to magician but I dont really care if some of my friend know the secret.Sometimes when I perform for my friend at school, maybe one of them know how to it and he will come to me tell me he know how I do that but he connot perform it well because he never practise it.He only try show that he is clever because he know the secret.I dont really care because he did perform it to his friend and I am the one that been regonised as a magician in my class because I perform all the trick I learn to my freind. However it is,I think the exposing of magic secret through the internet should be stop but of course it is hard to stop it because they are too many web sites exposing magic secret for free.

To really think about it, there is really nothing that we can do to stop whats happening out there. However, it is important to know that most spectators do not want to know how a trick is done. If you use charm and skill to entertain them they would most happily be willing to be entertained.

Remember, the spectators want you to succeed

Only a handful of people can't stand to not know how it was done. If you meet this kind of people, don't perform for them. They're not worthy of your time and effort.

Actually, i think there IS something we can do about this. It's not an "instant noodles" solution, but it is better than doing nothing.

We can start by educating those people who exposes magic on the internet that it is WRONG.
Some of them do it because they are losers in real life and want a chance to show how clever they are because they know how something is done. But I believe that there is quite a number of them who do it because they see a lot of people doing it and they think they are doing everyone a favour by "teaching" them how the trick is done.
In other words, there are people who do it simply because they don't know that it is wrong.

So what we can do is slowly, within our own means, influence the magicians (and hecklers) that we meet, either online or offline, that this is rude and unacceptable behaviour.
Like I said, this is not "instant noodles" solutions and it will not change things overnight. But if we influence some people, and THEY influence some people, and the people they influence also educate some other people, so on and so forth, over time, we can improve this dire situation.

Is it possible to influence an exposurer of magic to change? Yes. I have seen quite a lot during the short lifetime of SMC and MMF. People who openly profess to be very loose on the magician's code changing around and become strong opposers of exposure of magic.
Like I said, many times, they only do it because they don't know that it is wrong. We only need to educate them the right way.

It's an effort you and I can make in our own small ways. B)
