Title: Sweaty Palm Problem
Dennis - January 12, 2007 07:51 AM (GMT)
anyone here experience before this kind of problem where you sweat excessively??
well i do here.. my palm always sweat soo much till it prevents me from doin magic that requires sleight of hands such as coin magic...not to mention damaging my cards...(unless i'm in an air-con room ;) ) just curious....
Amane - January 12, 2007 07:59 AM (GMT)
Well I must say that its not so much the sweat that damages the card
but the dirt picked up by sweaty palms that makes them grimy and sticky.
Just wash you hands with soap before you touch your cards.
If your cards feel soggy, just leave em for a few days,
they'll dry up, or you can try compressing them using a card clip or sticking them between some heavy books...
hope that helps.

I think there was a topic on this quite some time ago.
I have a few frens whose palms are always just so wet that sometimes they feel shy to shake hands with people. They dont play cards... so ya.
I dunno how bad ya hand/palm sweats but I've heard of some kind of powder which u can actually apply on ya hands and it is supposed to keep ya hands dry... something like that.
Perhaps u can check out with a doctor or a pharmacist if they have such products.
Meanwhile, yeah practice in an AC or dry room.
Moisture definitely expands cards and ruins the quality, as Amane said.... best to wash ya hands first before touching ya cards. I have decks lying around in different areas in my room... so there's some i wash hands and some i dont really bother to wash hands coz they are already old and used.

this is called hyperhidrosis, google it up.
sad to say, I have this problem too.
Everytime someone initiate a handshake I will tell them beforehand that my palms are cold.
After playing the cards in this condition, it does lose its smoothness.
Try using talcum powder and a plastic bag, put the cards in with some poweder and shake. I have tried putting the cards back into the box to let it recondition itself, but it wont regain its smoothness though.
and yeah, I find doing coin magic a headache, when it slips off my palm... :(

I have that problem, it mostly affects my coin roll practice, so I'm kind of lucky to be living in a region where it's dry, windy, and cold at Melbourne. Malaysia is very humid, hot, and always need to switch on air-cond to practice, which shouts out why I love practicing my coin roll in the car right in front of the car air-conditioner, lol. And yes, like everybody say, need to practice is air-conditioner.

Staying in an air-conditioned room, not 16 degrees celcius, around 22 - 23 celcius, you can do the coin roll extremely fast as you are not sweaty, and your hand are not to cold, when it's too cold and hands moves slower.
Staying in a cold region, you can perform anytime anywhere without dropping but cannot do it fast but the temperature is very cold, so there is a pro and con in between them.

Yeah sweaty palms can ruin your routine when you perform, the "feel" is just not there, what I normally do is wash my hands like amane mentioned but then my hands gets too dry, what I do is apply just a small amount of hand cream just to get the right feel on my hands, the one I use is Nivea creme it's not the greasy or oily type that gets sticky or slippery, just apply it wait for few minutes to dry you will know when, then start handling your cards or others, and see if there is any improvement, IMO there is abit of a adifference, just try it out, but remember it wont gaurantee anything if you do have severe sweaty palms do consult a pharmasist or a doctor, cheers guys

yea.. i'll try washing my hand everytime i practice... i do agree that weather in australia is much better for me coz it is colder... (i stayed in brisbane b4 i came back so is not that cold till you can move your hand tho... :) )
wiping my hand is what i always do but it can onli momentarily stop it...
well i guess i'll have to check with docs & pharmacist to see if they can help...
coz this not only prevents me from doing magic but as well as socializing (handshake problem you know.... ;) )
thanx for the tips anyway....
cheers!

Wash your hand before performing ANY magic. :)

Sweaty Palms can help for certain moves, such as palming or even certain productions. But one thing you should be proud for is this: those with sweaty palms have much cleaner hands than the rest of us.
Why? Because they wash them more.
Don't worry about it Dennis.
