Title: Your Practice Style
Description: How you do it...

Brendan Low - March 3, 2007 07:24 AM (GMT)
Yo guys,

I felt this flourish section is a lil dead. So was thinking abt a topic that we can discuss here.

I was wondering how you guys spend ya time with ya flourishes.... here are some question and my answers. Like to hear from you guys as well...

1) What time you normally practice and for how long usually each time?
At nights... it is my only time... during weekday. Weekends i practice in evening mainly. Each practice is abt 2-3hrs.

2) Where do you practice?
Mainly in front of my computer or sometime on my bed

3) Do you use qood quality cards when practicing or cheapo ones?
Good quality ones... not so new, but never the v old stinko cards....

4) How do u normally start with ya practice? DO you do any finger exercises first?
I normally just go straight to it... get out the deck riffle here and there and then normally charlier and revos and then into sybil... madonnas.. etc etc.

5) Do you wash ya hands before you flourish?
Most of the time yes.... but sometimes i just get too lazy... depends what deck im handling as well i guess...

6) Do you use fanning powder? Do you like it?
I try not to cause I dont think it is necessary unless I really want to work on my fanning. Yeah FP does help keep card intack... but hate it when using powdered deck to do card magic... yucky.

7) Do you have a practice sequence (eg start off easy and then move on to harder moves?)
Not really.. just go with the flow...

8) How do you see how well or how your flourish looks like.... do u use webcam to see yaself, or mirror or mainly just see what it looks like from your point of view/angle.
I on the webcam when camming with others... but most of the time i see it from my point of view and at times i will stand in front of mirror to see how it look like in reality as well..

:)... hehe

Here's what I said, a lot of it is like Brendan's anyway lol.

1) What time you normally practice and for how long usually each time?
I'm constantly with the boards from when I wake, till when I sleep. So that's on average about 14 hours a day. Which is roughly 98 hours a week and 5096 hours a year. :|

2) Where do you practice?
Same as Brendan. But I take my good ol' pasteboards anywhere with me, when I'm in the car, in town- basically everywhere. :)

3) Do you use qood quality cards when practicing or cheapo ones?
For general practice I usually use Bicycles, Tallys or Studs. Make of it what you will.

4) How do u normally start with ya practice? DO you do any finger exercises first?
Nah, if you practice it naturally exercises your fingers, hehe. But for the most part, I usually just dive straight to it.

5) Do you wash ya hands before you flourish?
Yes, I always do that if I feel my hands are moist. A quick tip by the way, if you feel they are, put your wrists under a cold tap - that will help. :)

6) Do you use fanning powder? Do you like it?
Never tried it. I have always hated the idea.

7) Do you have a practice sequence (eg start off easy and then move on to harder moves?)
If you begin that, practicing becomes boring. Just do what you feel.

8) How do you see how well or how your flourish looks like.... do u use webcam to see yaself, or mirror or mainly just see what it looks like from your point of view/angle.
Webcamming and my own personal videos. A few months later I can look back and see how I did a certain thing and see if I've improved. With all luck, I would have done so. :) Also conventions help a lot, you'll know how you perform by the magicians reactions.

That's basically it from me lol. :)

1) What time you normally practice and for how long usually each time?
While doing homework... sometime at night, i'll just pick up a deck when i get frustrated with homework and keep playing with it till i'm destressed

2) Where do you practice?
Study table

3) Do you use qood quality cards when practicing or cheapo ones?
bikes

4) How do u normally start with ya practice? DO you do any finger exercises first?
no exercise.... normally start with charlier and sybill and we'll see what happens from there

5) Do you wash ya hands before you flourish?
if i'm using a nice deck, yes. but normally, it's just a bike, so, it's not important... i DO live in USA(abundant supply of bikes)

6) Do you use fanning powder? Do you like it?
no... don't like it. i feel it takes more energy to fan the cards out

7) Do you have a practice sequence (eg start off easy and then move on to harder moves?)
not really

8) How do you see how well or how your flourish looks like.... do u use webcam to see yaself, or mirror or mainly just see what it looks like from your point of view/angle.
if i'm free enough, i'll record myself, but normally, i just watch my hands

Jeff - March 13, 2007 03:42 AM (GMT)
1) What time you normally practice and for how long usually each time?
I practice once I have the chance. Even for a few minutes. But sadly once I started working, I don’t think I practice more than 20 minutes per day (that’s the reason why I don’t webcam with you much, Jordan). Very sad...

2) Where do you practice?
Again, anywhere once I have the chance.

3) Do you use qood quality cards when practicing or cheapo ones?
I normally use Bicycle or Tally Ho as they are more affordable. But since a few months ago, I use Jerry’s Nugget to practice card flourishes (thank you, Jordan).

4) How do u normally start with ya practice? DO you do any finger exercises first?
I don’t do any finger exercises before I touch my deck (shut up, Jordan).

5) Do you wash ya hands before you flourish?
Yes and with soap before I touch my deck (shut up again, Jordan)!

6) Do you use fanning powder? Do you like it?
Yes I do and I like it. But I will only apply it to the deck ONCE with very little amount of powder. It makes the whole deck feel better in your hands.

7) Do you have a practice sequence (eg start off easy and then move on to harder moves?)
No. I just do whatever I feel like it.

8) How do you see how well or how your flourish looks like.... do u use webcam to see yaself, or mirror or mainly just see what it looks like from your point of view/angle.
From my POV. Used to webcam with Jordan a lot and he would point out my mistakes.

JEUZE - March 13, 2007 09:21 AM (GMT)
1) What time you normally practice and for how long usually each time?
When reading artical from website without typing.

2) Where do you practice?
Those place when my eye is busy and my hand is free. infront of monitor or TV.

3) Do you use qood quality cards when practicing or cheapo ones?
Practice with a mess up deck. Those good quality and cheap mix up thickness far beyond the ordinary deck. Normally 60 cards make the prastice harder.

4) How do u normally start with ya practice? DO you do any finger exercises first?
Practice flourish is been finger exercises,so do reply a post.

5) Do you wash ya hands before you flourish?
Putting powder on my hand.

To be continue....

JE, you put powder on ya hands?

eh.. arent u to put powder on ya playing cards, not ya hands?

I hear quite a number of people say they put powder on their hands also.... but I really dont get what they mean.

Are they talking normal baby powder? And if so... baby powder does spoil the cards dont they?

And isnt a waste to apply Fanning Powder on ya hands? It's not cheap stuff.

Nadzri - March 18, 2007 12:55 PM (GMT)
HEres my bit heheh

1) What time you normally practice and for how long usually each time?

i practically practice whenever im free....when theres a deck in my hands....watch out!!!

2) Where do you practice?

wherever i am...ever since i start bringing a deck with me wherever i go..its been in cars....in front of the tv....while waiting for mum to finish shopping :S

3) Do you use qood quality cards when practicing or cheapo ones?

normal ones i guess....bikes...tallys's...bee's....we aren't all Mr. Jordan Lapping to practice with Jerry's :P

4) How do u normally start with ya practice? DO you do any finger exercises first?

yeah....some aerobics and a 15minute warm up jog....LOL No warm up....just some charlier's.....molecules....Notis cascades....then onto whatever im trying to smoothen out....

5) Do you wash ya hands before you flourish?

Not as much as i should be :(

6) Do you use fanning powder? Do you like it?

nyeh never tried it...would take away the feeling of a normal deck....

7) Do you have a practice sequence (eg start off easy and then move on to harder moves?)

no practice sequence...just whatever i feel like doing...unless my Olympic coach gets into his mood...then, you know :P

8) How do you see how well or how your flourish looks like.... do u use webcam to see yaself, or mirror or mainly just see what it looks like from your point of view/angle.

ummm.....well most of the time its my point of view....then its cam sessions with Mr Lapping....mirrors....Mum and Lil sis.....then i judge how well im doing by the ooooh's and ahhhh's of the crowd i perform for :P

EmmaTing - September 4, 2007 12:13 PM (GMT)
WOW. Thanks for the warm welcome. Flourishing has been fun. Somehow I can't get bored of it. :)

I will like to tell you all. I would like to keep my age to myself. Thank you. But here's a hint. I am NOT old.

Yukiko - September 4, 2007 01:34 PM (GMT)
Sukyi make that 4 girls=P

i'm backie=)

LingNemesis - September 4, 2007 02:03 PM (GMT)
Haha, I was really bored and I decided to pop by here for awhile.

I'm still flourishing, obviously, creating a few cuts here and there. It's cool.

- Ling.

PS, I would love to watch Emma/ Sukyi/Yukiko flourish. B)

Sukyi - September 4, 2007 02:12 PM (GMT)
Ling, I've got t a video with MCG in the "MMF Videos" section. Now much flourishes BY ME, but there are a few in there. Check it out! :)

Roy Foo - September 4, 2007 02:26 PM (GMT)
1) What time you normally practice and for how long usually each time?
Usually during the night, sometime during the day if I'm back home earlier.
My practise session would not last more than 1 hour during weekdays, and 2 hours during weekends.

2) Where do you practice?
Either sitting in front of my notebook or on the bed.

3) Do you use qood quality cards when practicing or cheapo ones?
I use Bikes and normally I would switch decks depends on what I wanted to practise.
A Powdered Red Bike for Fannings, A unpowdered Broken-in Blue Bike for routines & manipulations.

4) How do u normally start with ya practice? DO you do any finger exercises first?
I'm used to loosen all my fingers & wrists before grabbing my cards. It's just a bad habit because some doctors say you shouldn't loosen your joints as you might experiences pain when you're getting old. Especially during cold weathers. Oh God~!

5) Do you wash ya hands before you flourish?
Yes, all the time.

6) Do you use fanning powder? Do you like it?
Yes. Only on my particular Red Bike which I use to practise Fannings. It helps alot to fan cards evenly.

7) Do you have a practice sequence (eg start off easy and then move on to harder moves?)
No. I'll just swing it with my mood as I do get really frustrated not being to execute hard moves at the beginning and would eventually spoil the whole session.

8) How do you see how well or how your flourish looks like.... do u use webcam to see yaself, or mirror or mainly just see what it looks like from your point of view/angle.
Mirrors. My room is too dark for my webcam to operate smoothly.

Well that's basically it~! ;)

Wow conflict. Maybe your other personality will tell us your age lol. Or tell us a fake age. Or something.

Define old :P It's so arbitrary. You get 60 year olds saying they are not old and twenty somethings saying they're old.

If u are below 30yr old... then u are young

So, Im young ROFL....

Jarrett Goh - September 5, 2007 05:35 AM (GMT)
Talk about young.. am I the youngest one here? <_< It's kinda good to be young and into magic I guess, no need to worry so much about mastering moves in a rapid pace just so as long as I don't show them to laymen till they're good.

My uncle once called up my house I picked it up and told me he is coming for a visit. When he arrived he asked me who was that on the phone just now, I told him it was me and then he said he initially thought it was my dad :o off topic.. but then again it's chit chat section wahahaha.. -_-"

1) What time you normally practice and for how long usually each time?
Evenings.. only bout an hour each day. I'm a lazy person.

2) Where do you practice?
My desk or in the toilet mirror >.>

3) Do you use qood quality cards when practicing or cheapo ones?
I dedicate one for practicing flourish, and one for performance. One is usually clean, other one which is used for practice is normally a little worn out. Mostly Bicycles.

4) How do u normally start with ya practice? DO you do any finger exercises first?
Bah.. finger exercises, never do it.. then again I'm a VERY lazy person. If coin roll is part of finger exercises then yeah. Usually start off with some sybils..

5) Do you wash ya hands before you flourish?
Yes..

6) Do you use fanning powder? Do you like it?
Always, apply fanning powder the moment I open a new deck.. makes life easier when doing reserve one handed fans.

7) Do you have a practice sequence (eg start off easy and then move on to harder moves?)
I try to connect each flourishes so they kind of link together.

8) How do you see how well or how your flourish looks like.... do u use webcam to see yaself, or mirror or mainly just see what it looks like from your point of view/angle.
I'm either in the toilet doing flourishes for quite a while, which makes my mum think what in the world am I doing in the toilet for such long period of time just to shower. Or I'm just on my own.

- Jarrett, or how people normally spells it.. Jarret.

U dont need fanning powder on newly opened decks!

It takes a while to break new decks in and then u have the perfect deck. No need FP. FP only when it starts to not fan welll...

Jarrett Goh - September 5, 2007 11:25 AM (GMT)
Ah thanks for the advice.

Oh I'm not the youngest, that's cool. Got to meet up with Edmund when I'm back, should go pm him

There edmundw and Edmund Lee. Which want ah?

Sukyi - September 5, 2007 03:15 PM (GMT)
you wouldn't expect Edmund LEE to be younger than you though. He looks like he's 16-18. He's a real nice kid though.

About fanning powder... do you guys actually like it? I feel my hands get sticky after using a deck with fanning powder. Makes me feel dirty or something. hahaha.

Christopher Ng - September 5, 2007 04:36 PM (GMT)
I just bought fanning powder
And i know all the secrets of perfect fans in those xcm video

After applying fannig powder, the cards will be sticky and fannable, sticky for air cushioned type of cards and smooth for normal cheaper local decks
With fanning powder and a little more pressure, u can actually fan all 52 cards perfectly, even a reverse thumb fan, a double 360 degree fan, a twin fan, doing under pressure, arm spread, arm spread catch and flourishes easier
This is because all cards tend to be stickier and hardly slides off the pack.

Christopher Ng - September 5, 2007 05:54 PM (GMT)
Yes, cards slides to the side under pressure SLOWLY...1 by 1, no rush, slow motion, look super good..
U gotto try that , and le paul looks great with fanning powder

Bear in mind, cards are stickier....so easier to handle..haha

Brendan Low - September 6, 2007 02:35 AM (GMT)
i dont really like FP... i'd do without it if possible.

I only use it when it is necessary.... and even so.. i only put a smalll amount. (Not the bag method).

u dont need FP for a nice Underpressure...
