Hi everyone,
My name is Roy Foo, 20 years old boy from JB.
I'm studying in PJ, 2nd year degree at the moment.
I love performing Card Magic, Street & Close-up Magic and a little bit of Mentalism.
Been into magic experience: 1 and 1/2 year.
My current Goals are:
To choreograph a 30 minutes performance using only 52 pasteboards
To practice Card Manipulations [Not XCM]
To learn audience management [Asian Style], which is kinda tricky.

That's all for a brief introduction of myself.

Now, let's talk about me getting into this magical world.

I've started magic in the year 2002 when I discovered a Magic Shop at Plaza Pelangi JB – Magic Spot. Peter Chua is the owner and a highly experienced entertainer [I would say]. I started off by learning my very first magic trick “The Vanishing Handkerchief”. I was amazed every time he performed it to me with a little twist at the end. I bought it and practice it real hard to make it smooth and deception. I would then perform it to my friends and classmates and would always get a laymen’s reaction. They were so amazed even I did it for the 2nd time [Although I’m not supposed to]. Then, as time goes by, I begin to learn more tricks [Mostly are beginner’s stuff]. I’ve acquired Books & Props that were recommended by Peter. However, it all came down to a very sad incident which led me to stop performing for a period of time.

The Saddening Incident; :(

My secondary school was having a parade and every class has to send a representative or a team to perform something. It could be a dance, singing & etc. I was selected by my class to perform magic on a parlor. At that time, I was so excited about this. However, I did not take into account that I only know 5~10 Beginner’s Stuff and most of them are close-up magic. I did not seek out advice or experience from others, nor from Peter Chua. I then begin to choreograph my show with only 5 tricks, probably thinking that I could do a minute for a trick. I didn’t try using a silent act which means performing with music without talking. Instead, I tried to talk along with my performance without preparing my scripts. Another mistake is that, I was very nervous for the 1st time performing outdoors to 50~100 people that I did every trick outrageously fast. In the end, I finished the whole performance in less than 3 minutes. I was completely blank at that moment. I panic and didn’t know what to do. I didn’t get a good response or a good applause from the audience after every trick that I’ve performed. At the end, I pass the microphone to the MC to end the whole show. He did ask for applause at the end. However, it was like “Thank you for participating” in a console manner. I was dead drop at that time and I swear that I would never perform again.

The Revival; ;)

So, I’ve stopped for 3 years. One day, something just hit me to search for “Magic” on Mr. Google. I went to penguinmagic.com, ellusionist.com and downloaded the demo videos. I was slowly attracted back into the magical world. However, this time I have a better specify area of magic – Card Magic. Instead of going blindly into the Magic Shop purchasing General Magic, I’ve made up my mind to go into Card Magic. I bought the Royal Road to Card Magic, Books from Harry Lorayne and etc. I begin to not only practice & read books, but also do research in Card Magic to gain more information. Slowly, I begin to perform it to my Family & Friends. However, this time I have more confidence in myself. I never fail to amaze laymen with simple and direct Card Magic. Until now, I’ve been constantly practicing some very old Card Tricks which I loved it so much. I just never get bored performing the same trick over and over again, but of course to different spectators.

That’s all for my little story of how did I get into the magical world. Hope it doesn’t bored you guys.

And finally, I hope to learn from everyone, especially seniors. However, Seniors/Beginners, I believe everyone has their own uniqueness & personality. Hope to share & hear more joys from you guys.

Cheers,
Roy Foo

A very nice and inspiring piece.

I'm not too into card magic but each to his own, I suppose. I started with cards about one year ago, and most of my tricks are cards XD Irony eh.

Hope to see more of you here!

Where about in PJ?

Don't worry about screwing up your first performance. I remember mine... a BIG BIG flop!

Anyway, WELCOME TO MMF!

Welcome to the MMF forums.

Although I do think 30 mins of only card magic is overkill. But thats strictly my opinion. All the best.
