Title: Lousy Card Cover From The Us Playing Card Company?
Description: Cards are good but cover is bad
Jeremy Fu - July 23, 2007 05:52 PM (GMT)
I wonder have anyone ever thought about that. Have you ever realised that after you purchased a deck of card such as Bicycle, you'll find that the cover for the cards would be " rotten " first. On the surface of the deck clearly printed that this deck is made of Air-cushion/Air flow but WHY isn't the cover for the deck also the same ?
I always bring my cards along and I keep my deck in my pocket. I find that after a good 2 weeks r more, the covers starts to drop off gradually. Now I have almost 7 sets of cards in naked. O gosh :(
Do you guys face such problem ? You may share your methods of how to take care of your card case.
( btw, is there any product selling cards case which is cool ? )

Get a card case bah...that'll protect your card and the box....
for my case....card wore out too easily...the cards tend to "expand" after i practice with it a lot....a bicycle deck, if i practice like an hour a day...will be gone in like a month's time....(gone as in will become a very thick deck....)
so now i sometimes buy local cards to practice...and only use bicycle to perform... ^_^

Lol I think it's called a deck protector or a card guard, not sure which one it is. If there are enough of us, then Isaac can go order like 1000 decks from the USPCC and cut down costs by a lot :P
I don't see the point of air-cushioning the case, as the purpose of the air cushion is to just make it easier for the cards to be spread.
People like Sukyi and occasionally me don't care too much about our cards as we get them quite cheap anyway haha, although I suspect hers are actually cheaper than mine >.< I give cards away when performing if it requires the card to be signed. Souveneir for the spectator.
One month is quite decent for one deck, then after that time to move on dude.
Jeremy Fu - July 24, 2007 03:08 AM (GMT)
One of my friends, hock lung, from JB keeps his cards in his own card case which is madeof leather and balck in color. The case looks weird and isn't cool. But his bicycle has surfice for years   .
I just thought that if The US playing card company would make the card case the same quality as the cards, it would be much better. For a fact that I know, the air cushion cards are unlikely to be torn off very very very easily :!!: :!!:
Sukyi - July 24, 2007 03:08 AM (GMT)
Don't get me wrong, boy! I care about my cards! Yes... I do give away a lot of cards. If you think about it, giving away cards to magicians who "want to keep their deck good enough to play chor tai di" is the same as doing an Ambitious routine and giving away the card in the end. I never have a full deck on me unless it's brand new!
However, staying on topic. The USPCC boxes are actually really good quality. Maybe not as good as the cards, but if you treated them as nice as you treat the card, they'll stay good. Leave them on your desk for a month! They won't change. It's just how you put it in your pocket, throw it in your bag, etc. It rubs against other things in your pocket/bag. Also the way you open the box. Do you slowly open it to make sure the flaps don't bevel? I highly doubt it. A box is a box. A deck is a deck. No card clip can save it.
Even with a joe porper card clip(the best KNOWN card clip. I'm not doubting, but there IS a possibility for a better one around), your cards don't last forever. Throw them in curry and put them in the clip. You think it'll really restore the cards? Why is sweat from your hands all that different.
In my personal opinion, don't worry about the box. I know plenty of people who'd just carry around the deck anyway.

Dear Sukyi,
After reading your feedback,I realised you did mention about "but if you treated them as nice as you treat the card, they'll stay good. ".This statement made me to wonder, do I really treat y cards well ?
I got my new deck, the first thing I do, SPRING the cards... O yeah :!!: Second thing I do, Riffle shuffles till it loses its " Firmness " . I like cards which is a little easier to handle. Perhaps this is my habit, after practicing the magic, into my bag I throw my deck. :ph43r:
Yet,I still believe that if USPCC make the cover better, its better. At least coat the case in plastic .
Btw, Sukyi, would you borrow your frens to play "chor dai ti" with your new USPCC cards ? For me I would not, that's why I got a malaysian buatan cards in my bag always. Suprisingly, the malaysian cards and its caes lasts longer. Why ? They are made of plastic :!!: :!!: :!!:
Haha.
VincentP - July 24, 2007 03:58 AM (GMT)
EH I am NOT a BOY! I am a going-to-be-21 year old male... okay that sounded awkward as long as not boy la >.< Sheeesh.
Don't worry about the cards, as they can take a fair amount of stress and wear. What I would avoid doing though, is mid-air riffling them, as my method of mid-air riffling tends to cause them to bend irreparably at the corners, unfortunately.
Most people do work in their decks a bit when opening a new deck of cards, so you're not alone. It's a bit difficult to perform using a new deck of cards that are so slippery and all.
As Sukyi said, treat your card case well and it will last. If not, gone case. The same goes with cards.
adres - July 24, 2007 04:54 AM (GMT)
I got the Joe Porper card clip from Isaac and use it to carry my deck of cards with me around. Haven't had any problem so far and like it very much.
If you are that concern about your card case and have some extra cash, why don't you invest in a Joe Porper card clip?
Since you always carry your cards with you, having a Joe Porper really helps you to lengthen the life span of your cards (not to mention, including your card case).
It's made of metal (aluminium, I think), so it's pretty solid.
Amane - July 24, 2007 05:51 AM (GMT)
....its just an ordinary deck of cards...
use them, abuse them, get a new deck....simple...
Jarrett Goh - July 24, 2007 07:11 AM (GMT)
I wonder if it was really made in Air-cushion, how to be able to execute the move where you pop up half the deck from the pack, that Devo teaches in XB DVD.. the whole deck will be all over the floor
I think the simple solution to this to get a card case, then there wouldn't be a problem about atrocious looking covers.. I'll need to deal with it until my wallet is fatter though >_> Is the only thing we like to see get fat.

I think I've seen people carrying this..If I'm not mistaken its originally a cigarette case. It even has a side pocket meant for lighters which my friend used to put a mini Sharpie pen

yeah man....cards ARE like buddies...hahaha... that's why i try to make my USPCC decks last as long as possible...not cheap leh... :D
Jeremy Fu - July 24, 2007 11:51 AM (GMT)
Oh.. :!!:
not cheap.. yeah :)
Sukyi - July 24, 2007 02:43 PM (GMT)
Yes, my friends play chor tai di with my cards all the time! Even in a mamak with wet tables from condensation of the drinks!
A little off topic: if you carry a second deck for your friends to play with, it makes it all the less convincing that your deck isn't a "magician's deck"!
But on the whole. If you treat the box right, it won't get damaged. I highly doubt you'll keep it in a nice frame. Making a box of similar design with any material is going to get it damaged! Air cushion wouldn't help it! It's the way it opens and closes, and the way it's cut and folded, that makes it prone to the damage done. The way you handle it, throwing it around and all, is what actually causes the damage.
I think Joe Porper card clips look great and it's a cardician's pride to own. I personally believe it's good. If you want to save your BOX then sure... it will HELP!... but on the whole, if you're just going to open it roughly, with your unwashed, sweaty hands, then what's the point?
Lastly, with regard to your "not cheap leh"... A GREAT MALAYSIAN MAGICIAN once told me, as a cardician, all you have are your hands and your cards, when it's time to change deck, just change it. DON'T STINGE ON COST OF YOUR CARDS!
VincentP - July 24, 2007 03:21 PM (GMT)
But Sukyi, you must remember that the decks are cheaper for us two than the rest XD
So, we've got to make some allowances sometimes. ;)
Archie - July 24, 2007 03:24 PM (GMT)
I not sure if this is a bit off-topic but did anyone else tried to clean their cards one by one with a clean cloth? ... i did.
Yukiko - July 24, 2007 03:47 PM (GMT)
If i'm not mistaken, the Joe Porper Adres bought is no longer carried by Murphy..limited edition=P
A card cost about RM14..not that expensive also if you ask me..i mean...a normal meal will cost about the same price lor.. :P
Christopher Ng - July 24, 2007 04:06 PM (GMT)
Haha, my cards
1st day, newly open deck, spring spring
2nd day, 1 day old deck, long distance spinner, mixed up all the cards, then u get 50% new 50% old cards
3rd day, flourish, more spring, more le paul, more long distance spinner
the next day i use my card to play chor dai di already
haha
4 blue decks die in 2 months
Christopher Ng - July 24, 2007 04:15 PM (GMT)
Last time when i started with bikes, i wipe them everyday, religiously, with clean tisu papers and those cloth that wipes spect, it takes very very long time to completely clean the cards!
kind of wasting time,
Now i dont really like to play with new decks, too many restrictions, you cant bear to spring, cant bear to throw, cant bear to fold, cant bear to do a crimp, cant do this cant do that, the most only take out and fan...
See, what's the point? might as well keep in cabinet for display
A card clip may be a luxury, but if you really sayang your cards and plan to make your 1 bikes survive for a year, i suggest you to keep the deck, and play with local cards..haha
Though i totally agree that yes bikes are very expensive compared to other plastic coated cards for malaysians( i dont mean those in uk and us )
Think about it, saving a meal in mc.donalds, save an ice-cream from baskinrobins, save a couple of movies, or save 2 packets of cigeratte a week and u can have enough money to buy 1.
So now i not really sakit hati to play with my bikes, but i use malaysia best quality card- Jaws as well la.. haha

Even so, when I was living in KL, I paid RM16 for my decks. Of course, initially, I felt the pinch too! But hey! If you can afford to eat at McDonald's at lunch time, baskin robbins at 5pm, chillis at dinner time and then off to the mamak before you finally head home(WHICH MOST TEENAGERS SEEM TO BE ABLE TO DO), there's really no excuse to not be able to afford a deck of cards that costs rm16(from what I hear, market price for bikes has gone down).
bare in mind, this thread was started because of the quality of the box... not the cards...
Brendan Low - July 25, 2007 01:06 AM (GMT)
Good example Sukyi...
A meal at McD cost RM10-15... and it gives u the pleasure of enjoying it for like 15mins?
A deck of Bicycle Cards RM15... and it last you for quite some time.. average 3-4 weeks....!
So....? which would u rather spend ya money on?
ROFL...
xron - July 25, 2007 01:14 AM (GMT)
There's another cheap way of taking care of the card case, for a longer time period. I used to do this when I was travelling previously.
Get a can of transparent spray. Do 2 coatings over the case. This will help to make it lasts longer.
Off topic:- You can also spray the cards and sink them at the bottom of an aquarium. Looks cool.

Haha true, so if you know you belong in that group, just restrict a bit of your diet and go buy a few more bikes! Helps your diet too XD unless you starve to death la, not good, hehe.
Somehow this thread evolved into a discussion about the cards as well, as you'd want the box only as long as the deck is still worth putting it into.
Oh well. Seems that generally it's : take good care of the card and the card box, but don't be too stingy. One or two decks a month isn't too costly!
Sukyi - July 25, 2007 02:38 AM (GMT)
ok ok... If it's really THAT expensive, when you go eat, don't order a drink! Everyday save RM1.20. At the end of the month, you'll have RM36. Top up a bit more, you can have 3 decks a month, which is enough for most people's usage(I said most ah! no one start pointing fingers at me!). 3 decks and the missing drink won't really hurt your diet. Sound good? ok! kau teem! no more complains about bikes being expensive!

Which is why I said from the beginning....

they're JUST cards for cryin out loud...
rm15 is a cheap price to pay for 1-2 weeks of enjoyment -_-
better than wasting your time in a cybercafe or a movie or something....
