Title: Card Trick For Bday Gal
Description: Things to perform
Brendan Low - September 3, 2007 09:55 AM (GMT)
Hey guys,
Are there any good card tricks out there made specially for birthdays.
Birthday tricks... any good ones?
Im going to Syd next week and I am to perform for this gal who turns 21 at her party. It is a pretty formal party.. they say guys must wear a jacket.
Surely i have to do tricks for her frens and all.. that... no probs as I'll just do the usuals....
But.. i need something something special that i can perform to the 21yr old gal.
Anyone has any idea? Appreciate it.. cheers!
Brendan

If you are on a jacket, perform Samuel's cigarette routine.. haha
Maybe rose production??? or sponge balls, girls love them
Dont do cards all the time Brendan..haha
Jennifer - September 3, 2007 11:43 AM (GMT)
Well, maybe magically appear the gift you bought for her??

Shon Chong - September 3, 2007 03:41 PM (GMT)
lol how about doing 4Aces cutting magic which cut the card randomly and appear 4 aces.. but this time using other card which got "happy 21st birthday" wrote on it.
or do some magic which ask her to sign the card and it changed to other...lol
or even card into a nice glass bottle.. as a present for her?
Jeremy Fu - September 4, 2007 07:47 AM (GMT)
:!!: Dealing cards with girls, you find me correct..
However,to do it "formally",i got a limited ideas..
I'm glad to share some..
Here are they..
1) Photo switch
This trick serves as an introduction..
As you begin to perform magic.. take a picture frame with pictures in it and relate how important this person is.. When relating, try to say the similiar characteristic between you and the gal like " this person is smart adorable cute but not ugly.. this person has a big large eyes ...etc ) .. When saying these, kiss the frame often as though you like him/her very much. Make the audience think that you're actually mentioning the birthday girl.
HOwever, when you turn the frame around and show it to the audience, let the audience see that you actually kissing your own picture :!!: :!!:
Believe me if done nicely, many ppl will like "booooooooooooo"..
Later you may do a picture switch later covering the frame with cloth for example.. how to do the swicth ? Keke.. This I'll keep to myself.. :P
2) Classic Do as I do trick
By using 2 decks, the end result of the trick is both you and her had initially selected the similiar cards ( I'm sure you guys know how to do it )
but if the gal whom you are to perform has bf,invite them up and do the forcing cards on them lor.. simple yet sweet if done perfectly with some adding of jokes and stories like " ok if u 2 are destined to be together you 2 shall have the same cards "...
sometimes if you wanna be naughty.. make the couple have different cards but you yourself have a hidden card in your jacket and same cards with the girl :!!: :!!:
3) Falling coin
This is not a trick. Rather,it is a playful act .A person is invited to take part in the trick taught you actually did the "trick" but the audience will know how the trick is done.
A brief example of this routine being performed by Brendan..
( B = Brendan , G = gal )
B: I've a coin in my hand and I shall insert it into your brain
G: how ?
B: Look this coin is in my left hand..Come forward & bend down your head. I shall insert it into your head !
G: ( Comes forward,bending down )
B : ( Coin is switched to the right hand without the gal noticing but the audience see it. Pretend to insert the coin with your left hand by touching the head of the gal;meantime, your right hand place the coin on your head without the gal noticing except the audience )
B : Do you feel it ? The coin penetrates through your skull into your brain
G: ( touching the head in seach for the coin)
EVERYONE LAUGHS
Ending : You may end it by having her dancing with you then give each other a final bow... then TA DA ! coin came out from her head :!!: :!!:
All above are of parlor/stage typed magic..
If you want some close-up typed tell me.. I got some too.. LOL
Hope this help..

So fast..? :P
Brendan must be good...
Brendan Low - September 5, 2007 04:13 AM (GMT)
Thanks guys for ya input...
I'll see wat i can do...
Im definitely going to perform ya cannibals Samuel :)....
Samuel Chong - September 5, 2007 02:17 PM (GMT)
I have a routine designed to perform for birthday guy/gal...
However, I don't think you have time to practise...
If you manage to get the right timing, I would recommend you to
perform only 1 routine which is Lame Trick (Last Trick).
So fast perform Monster (cannibals), I think a bit wasted.
Brendan Low - September 6, 2007 02:31 AM (GMT)
Things I'll sure to perform for the crowd/bday gal
- ACR
- Here and there
- 2 Card Monte
- Cutting to Aces
- Twisting the Aces
- Daley Show
- Monster
- Devastation
- Queens (JL version)
- Do as I do.... (the one using 2 decks)
- Jokers are wild (I simply it this name as it involves the Jokers)
- Subway
I may do some of John Bannon tricks as well...
hmmm...
Amane - September 6, 2007 07:45 AM (GMT)
If you wanna do a John Bannon trick I suggest his ace assembly routines.

Hehe, i just back from a birthday party
Performed randomly for about 2 hours
Did 2cm to birthday message to birthday girl,
Biddle trick
MMF tshirt trick

Hummer card
Sponge balls
Stigmata
Last trick opener( the lame version) to a heckler infront of his gf.. haha syok feeling man!!
Invisible deck
(AT random crowd)
Lastly pulled a crowd with metal bending
And end with flash paper -> firewallet -> Dlite
It was fun , because people did not expect what is happening..
Ooverhead some guy who think that they know secret and they are smart
D'lite : " he has a light ball , whenever he press it it lights, so he toss it from hand to hand at speed"
MEtal Bending : " He is using special fork, with a spring, when you hold it straight it will bend and when you shake it it will go back to normal

Magic is about the element of surprise and suspense
Always leave the audience deperately wanting more...
After entertaining and making them laugh,
Leave them amazed, let them kept their mind wondering
If they ever ask you how, why or show them again
Give them million dollar smile and keep cool yet friendly...
This way not only my magic routine is magical, I'm "magical" as well...
Basically,
1) I don't think perform so many routines is a good idea.
2) If you are guess behave like a guess/VIP; not a performer/worker.
This is just my opinion...

Funny how the human mind works to explain the bizarre...

Samuel, ya very true to make ourselves as guest or vip instead of performer
I admit that i performed abit over last night , haha.
But i treated it as practicing my showmanship n presentation
This is different from performing to the mirror or fellow magicians( magicians who know what is going to happen), and to get feedbacks from laymen.
Yesterday there was a big crowd, so i was trying to put myself into the situation of performoing to a big crowd, to gain some experiences and feedbacks, just in case these situations arise in coming future
At the same time I observe the responses and reactions i got from the routines i performed, to choose the ones that suit me most in my future shows
Roy Foo - September 9, 2007 11:56 AM (GMT)
How did you manage to hear what they say?
When you are performing or feedbacks?
I used to perform during birthday parties too with a large crowd in front of me. It's normally when I do an ACR and somehow the DL sleight was expose too much on the Internet or TV, so sometimes I could here or see some people [Usually a Guy~!] whispering and explaining to his friends beside about the trick.
They usually go like this... "You see his hand, bla bla bla... it's actually not the top card because he bla bla bla...".
I manage to hear it as the audiences are very quiet. However, I did try to change my act just to challenge those hecklers and when they are stunned too, I'd just love to see their faces. B)
D*mn those hecklers~! ;)
But, it's just the process of gaining experiences...
P/S: Cyril Takayama always said this during his performance, "Don't think, just feel~!". I'm sure you people have heard this before, try to use it as well to cut down hecklers~!

Performance for Bday girl:
Ok, I am not really prepared as the person told me I am just one of the normal guest. She request me just to show "some tricks" to her friends.
When I walk down,
20 - 30kids sitting down waiting for me to perform.
So this is what I did:
1) Fire Wallet
Patter: Who wants some cash? Someone came out and BOOM Fire!!
2) Professor Nightmare
3) Linking Rings
4) Cards Trick
- Colour Changes
- Ambitious Cards
- MCG Mindreading (failed) bday girl cannot get the "signal"
- Card to mouth
5) fire wallet (audience request)
The end.

Agreed! Till she screamed, 'ouch!'
It was a funny routine, this one time! :P
Christopher Ng - September 9, 2007 04:27 PM (GMT)
While performing, i observe their reaction and response towards my patter, where were their eyes looking and how did they answer my questions
After the performance, i will actually talk to some of the audiences to gain feedbacks, what they like the most, what is the least amazing trick, what is the boring trick, what they think about the tricks and so on
I met a hecker while i was performing my hummer card. the party was outdoor, so it was generally dark.
He said, 'hey i know there is string!
I answered, " where?
He said, " on your hand, straight down to the card
I kept quiet, did around the world,2 rounds. and passed him the card for inspection
He was silent.
And i said, when you think that u know everything, actually you know nothing..
1 plus 1 doesn't equal to 2 always, think before you talk, there is no definite yes or no answer, it is always a maybe and depends
Then i proceed to the Dr.daley last trick
(i was abit rude and harsh... who ask him to be the bf of one of my close friend, so i show no mercy. haha )
(later on that day, he said he 'heckle'' because he dint like the feeling of being cheated and wanted to find out the truth.. Anybody got suggestions to answer to such question?? Besides saying i'm here to entertain and not to cheat )
simonskp - September 10, 2007 01:34 AM (GMT)
IMO heckler are just out to make our performance difficult because they do not like other ppl getting all the attention instead of them... thats why they want to heckle.... there are bound to be people like that in every crowd. So usally I will either stop performing or just ask them to shut up !

Tyas Frantz discusses in the topic of "Dealing with Hecklers" as part of one of his episodes in his podcasts, which are released in penguinmagic so maybe you want to check them out, very useful advices and got several 'episodes' out for magicians to listen to. My notepad have full of notes all from his podcast.
Oh btw, it's on the right side of the page, in case you've never checked out the podcast before. Episode 14.

Well, he's not being cheated, logically speaking. He's not losing anything y'know? Sure according to Oxford, it's dishonesty in order to gain an advantage in your favor. But we're not making him do anything but be entertained! Kinda funny he said he was being cheated.....
Ah... i would just say, 'If i was being very honest, where's the fun in that?' ;)
Yukiko - September 10, 2007 04:15 AM (GMT)
i did one for my bestie before...
i made her pick a card...did Daley's last trick
but i editted it abit
instead of just having the card she chose to appear,
i made it with the happy birthday words on the card...=)

That sounds very sweet :)
It's little things like that that make a "trick" memorable in a big party. I guess it depends on your intention B, if you're trying to show them that you are a magician, then it's advisable to show off a couple of tricks. But if you're there impress the girl, not as a magician but as a person capable of making the other person smile, then one great trick should suffice (and being an experienced cardist that you are, you'd know which one is great which one is okay in your arsenal :)).
Good luck bro! Hope you get blow! I mean the bow! :D

1st, see their reaction.
2nd, get opinion from fellow magicians.
3rd, ask how is the preformance after the show (while chit chatting with host).
4th, you will know you did well if someone invite you for their next show.

Ah... this thread. I was looking for tricks as well.
So, I think I'd share what I've found/thought of.
1. Card from a rose
2. Force a card, then do some card change, change to the card with "Happy Birthday" written on it.
Yea, they've been mentioned before... but oh well.
Cheers.
P/s I'm new here. B)

We can also apply the concept of "Don't think, just feel" to ourselves as magicians when are watching another fellow magician is performing in front of us. We may know what's going to happen next but by acting ourselves like a layman, we get to enjoy the performance.
I often drop by (pass, by I would say) a magic shop here, the people there do not know I am a magician so I take advantage of them to entertain me. Their favourite tricks are Triumph and sponge balls routine. I know the ball in his hand has been vanished to my hand, I know he would transfer the card to the top and such. But, considering the fact that I want to enjoy it, I simply feel the performance and it does make me laugh like crazy along with my laymen friends (somehow my friends will always get blurred if they see me "shocked".. you know.. "you are a magician, don't u know already how it's done?"-that kind of thing).
As for performing for laymen, I remembered JB Benn of Mondo Magic saying, "People, when they see magic, all they need to do is to believe it, otherwise, they'll be crazy forever" <------ THIS IS NOT THE EXACT SENTENCE OF WHAT HE WAS SAYING, BUT IT SOUNDS SOMETHING LIKE THAT!
Enjoy magic!

Just some sharing, recently I went for my friend's sister's birthday dinner at a restaurant. It was just me, my friend and her sister, her sis had requested for me to show her some magic during the dinner.
I performed 3 effects: Revolver, Biddle and Jay Sankey's Bigger Finish. I think she like the last one the most. ^_^ its my favourite card effect at the moment. The 'enlarged' card at the end gets them laughing! :D
Brendan Low - October 5, 2007 03:45 AM (GMT)
