Hi Guys and ladies.
My name is Harn Shern. I'm 28 this year. Just started getting interested in magic.
I like impromptu, card and coin magic. Been playing around with card but don't know any tricks.... damn sad. :P Hope that can learn more from you all.
Cheers.!! B)

Hi.. Welcome to the forum and enjoy your stay! :D
VincentP - October 24, 2007 08:44 AM (GMT)
Hello Han Shern,
Well you can start off by learning from books and dvds, Royal Road to Card Magic is the card book to get, for everyone.
If you want coins, then Bobo's Modern Coin Maigc. It's a book too.
For DVD's, you'll have to ask other people :P
Hope you find magic fun and entertaining!

The 1st 2 vids are flourish videos and not Magic per se. I won't recommend that to beginners.
You'd be better off starting with Mark Wilson's Complete Course in magic. (a book)
And if you want videos, I'd recommend you start with the Michael Ammar's "Easy to Master" series DVDs from L&L. Or Michael Ammar's "Icebreakers" DVD.

Yo Harn Shern,
Formerly from Sunway College hostel B307?? hehehe.
Fancy meeting u here.
Check out 'Mark Wilson's Complete Course In Magic'. I found it in Boarders the Curve when i was there.
HIGHLY recommended! covers everything from closeup to stage, cards coins, balls etc etc.
yinhowe - October 24, 2007 11:56 AM (GMT)
Don't underestimate the Magic for Dummies and Magic for Idoits series. These are great as well, they dont have fancy tricks, but the basis are there. and i still refer to those dummies/idoits magic books.
hsjuay - October 24, 2007 11:56 AM (GMT)
Woi.... yinhowe! u here too....hahaha....
yea bingo.... Ex-b307 sunway college hostel. should have expected you here too.
ok man... i'll try to grab hold of this book 'Mark Wilson's Complete Course In Magic'.
JeffG - those i mention too advance... i'll try what u suggest. thank. :D

Magic related stuff in Malaysia, Yes, of course im here! :D
Dun get caught-up in all those super hyped up single effect dvds, sometimes they are not that value for money.
Michael Ammar's 'Easy to Master Card Miracles' is great for card work. For more variety check out Daryll's 'Fooler Doolers'.
Don't worry dude. Can call me if anything.

hey there hsjuay.
Amongst all the DVDs.... i'd go for Born to Perform. It's really good :).
U'll learn some v cool tricks and patter.
If u want to get into flourishes, I'd suggest the System. Extreme beginner is good for beginners though... especially the fanning workshop. :).
Welcome and all the best in magic!
Brendan

Hello! Welcome!!
Haha, here's a tip : Get what you can afford!! Magic related stuff ain't cheap y'know! But well, as beginner you should dabble in all categories of magic before deciding which one suits you. So yes, 'Mark Wilson's' and 'Magic for Dummies' are excellent books!!! Me have one!!! :P
Enjoy the forum, looking forward to your future posts.
VincentP - October 25, 2007 08:51 AM (GMT)
Wow Jennifer you mean you actually bought books?!! :P
Anyway yeah, get the Mark Wilsom CCIM rather than the 2 I suggested, although those are great too.
Also, read some other forums and see how they start out, I'd recommend www.magicbunny.co.uk. It's an excellent site.
I would recommend reading books first rather than starting on videos as reading books will force you to imagine more and come up with your presentation rather than just copying.
Of course, there are arguments for both sides. Some say copying first will give you the skills and the knwo-how then you branch out on your own.

personally, my english is not so good, so what i faced now is, bought book, can't understand words inside.. and there're many words that are used by magician in book, and those words we seldom use it or seldom see in our daily life..this is just my personal experience..

I think the titles he mentioned are DVDs. Not really sure, though, as I'm not a card-guy.

Looking forward to it m'dear :P
Anyway HS the only books mentioned here is CCIM and RRTCM and Bobo's. The rest are all DVDs.
Victor: You might take longer to understand, and so do I, but then because you slowly do it that way you remember it better and may even think of new things yourself while trying to understand it. Do try. It most certainly is worth the experience.
