Victor Ng - November 16, 2007 06:21 AM (GMT)
i'm not very experiences but do have a little bit. :) erm, think back to my 1st stage performance -_- i performed some appearing and vanishing silk and one of the forumer here did help me to perform too..anyway, you can perform card manipulation if there's a cam during the prom night.. or d'lite, linking rings, appearing and vanishing silk, torn and restored newspaper... just my 2cents ^_^
Bryan - November 16, 2007 12:07 PM (GMT)
i have planned to perform the Ninja Ring by Shoot Ogawa..is that ok for stage performance? I am not so good in card manipulation cause my priority is close up magic..so i really dun have any idea for stage performance..how is actually a stage performance?
Victor Ng - November 16, 2007 01:10 PM (GMT)
erm, what you watched in tv lo... i don think is suit la cause some handling in the dvd is only for ninja rings but not linking rings.. anyway, i'm currently practising Jeff Mcbride's linking rings routine. and also on the way thinking of my own routine... when is the prom night? if still got time, maybe you can make your own routine..

Here's a good point:
Magic is just a matter of prespective, very dependant on the presentation.
In your case, you could turn a close-up effect into a stage effect.
As an example, a simple force and prediction effect.
If you can get a few spectators from different parts of the room to come up on stage to help you out, its rather entertaining to the rest of the people too.
Thats just an example though. Many other tricks can be modified with the right presentation to appeal to a large crowd.
Brainstorm a bit and i'm sure you'll find something suitable.
If you need some help you can always PM me.

Bryan,
The first thing is for you to figure out what you can do best. Do not go about buying props that you know nothing about, as you will most probably rush yourself trying to learn it and in the end you will end up with a horrible act.
Amane gave you some very good advice right there. If you're used to performing on a small scale, think of ways to make it look bigger and more spectacular.
For instance - and I'm using Amane's example - get 3 members of the audience to pick out a card each. Then hand them each an envelope, and talk about how you are able to predict the future. Get them to open their envelopes and BOOM! In each envelope is a copy of their chosen cards, each blown up to 30 times their original size!
I know that sounds kinda like mentalist stuff, but hey, I'm a mentalist. What can I say? :P
Anyway, remember to plan your act thoroughly, even if it's a 5-minute act. Script your show, plan for anything that might go wrong, have multiple outs, have contingency plans and backup tricks.
Good luck! Don't forget to tell us how it went!
Cheers!

thx..i will consider you guy's idea as well..besides this, what else can i do..my favourite is the Magician's Nightmare but all of them are my school mate and i had showed them the MN before and there will be no surprise for them..i will have a partner with me on stage,he said wanna perform card from mouth in a hillarious way..i said 'we have a duet and then solo each'..about the duet he suggest the card from mouth but the solo...we really have no idea..

Hello Bryan ,
What are you going to do ?
Manipulative act ? Or few different magical effects which involves audience ?
If it is manipulative act , do Balls and Thimble manipulation !
Just make sure that you know the basic sleights .
For eg , classic palm , thumb palm and etc .
The MOST important thing about manipulative act is your THEME .
You have to let your audience know what you are acting on the stage .
A comedian , gambler , beggar and the list goes on and on ..
Be creative !
If you are planning to perform different effects of magic ,
then i would say go for TnR newspaper , Dancing Cane , Zombie etc etc ..
Anyway , if it is Dancing Cane , the MOST you can do is 3 minutes .
Do not exceed 3 minutes , audience will gets bored if it is too long .
Same goes to the Zombie effect .
When is your performance ? Is it long from now ?
If the time allows , practice some sleight of hands are also good .
So that you can perform with billiard balls .
Or maybe cards , roses , bottles , candles and etc .. You name it !
Good luck :D
Best,
Kenny

Since you are a close up guy, I would suggest these effects which I think will transision nicely from closeup to stage:
Arm twisting illusion (ala David Copperfield in Tornado of Fire), Great effect, lotsa audience interaction, plays super big, easy to perform, best of all - NO preparation or set up watsoever!! :D Best for your situation, in my opinion
here are somemore:
Cut and restored rope
Change Bag
Egg bag

Oh in addition to my suggestions, many magicians, including myself, are guilty of buying some props and expect to perform it right away or next week or whatever.
Please take note that Magic is to be practised untill perfected, even with the iad of gimmicks, then only performed in public.
my 2 cents (RM) :)

Yes, it's never too late to learn
but then do you think that less than 1 month time is sufficient for him to practise well, go up to the stage and perform manipulation..?

yea..cut and restore..thx man..anyway..i have figured up some tricks to perform...i have considered manipulation but i just scare no time to practise..any way,thx you guys for your idea,i really appreciate that :D
Kenny - November 18, 2007 05:38 AM (GMT)
So you have decided on what tricks you are going to perform ?
Remember , if you are performing magic on stage with loud music , then the tricks must be linked together and the MOST important for loud-music situation is the VISUAL-ness of the tricks .
If you are using mic , then it is OK to have few different tricks .
So yeah ... Good luck :D
Best,
Kenny

Hi Bryan,
I'm kind of curious here. How dare you accept the invitation to perform on stage in such a short period and without stage experience? :P
First of all, I guess you have never perform using canes, silks and usual stage manipulation stuff since you said you have never performed on stage before. So, you should forget about using them.
Before I start suggesting some simple but play big tricks, I assume your presentation is should be more than ok. I have a standard manipulation routine for paid gig and stand up routine for free show. As for the stand up routine, all the tricks are base on presentation, here are few of them:
1. Six card repeat: Stand up style, similar to the one in Wayne Dobson's Royal Variety Show.
2. Sponge ball routine: 2 volunteers. My routine is also base on Wayne's. It is a standard routine which the ball transfer from one volunteer's hand to the other.
3. Linking Ring: 1 volunteer. Since you are familiar with Ninja Ring, so it should be not a problem for you to come up with a comedy stand up routine utilising 1 audience. Try to search from youtube for reference.
I spend total time about 10-15 mins for this 3 routine by adding some jokes and conversations with volunteers. If it is not enough, add your rope routine (you did mentioned "Professor Nightmare" didn't u?) at the middle with music. So it can give different 'taste' to the audience instead of keep on talking in each trick.
You can also try out mentalism, some of them do play big in such occasion with not much amount of practice. I'm not a mentalist, so I can't give you much info on this. However, as I mentioned before, your presentation should be more than ok (and I assume you are ;) ).
I admire your bravery. But if I were you, I wouldn't have accept the invitation. :P Anyway, good or bad, this coming prom performance will sure fire up you up to a higher level.

I've been wanting to say that when I say this post...
Next time be prepared before you accept the show
You have so short time of practise your mind will be busy remembering
the routine, the move and the presentation...
You might run a high chance of selling the secret away accidentally...
Since you have accepted the invitation...
Just try your best...
Try to use routine that you are confident with
then play it big...
If can't then get a video camera to shoot your performance and project it on the screen...

I believe that too...
No matter what take it as an experience...
