Title: Elmsley Count

Roy Foo - December 1, 2007 05:20 PM (GMT)
Elmsley Count is one of the most basic maneuver is Card Magic.
Here is the problem I'm facing most of the time.

Whenever, I'm using my own deck to perform routines involving Elmsley Count, I never have a problem executing it without breaking the rhythm as it'll look more natural.

However, when I do not have my deck with me which happens most of the time, and when people hand you any random local or souvenir brand playing card, they are usually plastic coated or shiny coated which to me, very hard to execute the Elmsley Count without breaking the rhythm as I worried that I might flash the edges or the cards would spread during the maneuver.

The Block Pushoff move is somehow harder the execute it using decks which are fairly new and not familiar. I only manage to do it with the help of patter and misdirection as an excuse to break the rhythm as to get a firm feel to block pushoff while stealing the next card.

Is there anyone here have come across with this kind of problem? Can you execute the Elmsley Count without breaking the natural rhythm with any deck given? If so, kindly point and guide me in anyway you can. Thank you.

Practice a couple thousand more times?
but yea seriously that may be the problem...
practice till you're doing elsmley counts even when you don't want to......

I guess one way is to buy every type of local decks available (note I say type, not brands, cus that could amount to hundreds!). Get some plastic, some cheap ass stuff, the beer brand deck, ya know the likes, it shouldn't be more than 10 decks. And practice it with them.

Or, keep doing what you do. Rhythm break should be ok if you're well versed with misdirection. I would rather stall it up a little bit with misdirection than flashing.

Working with very old worn out cards help too. That's why i hardly throw away my old decks.

I'm still stuck with 2 card block. Any higher and I flash my cards. Ouch!!

If you do shows often, practice with fairly new deck

You wont want to perform with a worn out deck in front of paid audiences/ your client

Get use to the feel of new deck

Don't worry too much about the lack of rhythm, I suggest you cover it with your voice intonation and they won't catch a thing. This is how I did it before I discover the "real" method of executing the Elmsley count.

yeah..I always moving my hands along and talk more as a misdirection so that they won't be too focus on your cards.. ;)
