Title: My Dl Sucks
Description: Big Time
Fahmi - December 26, 2007 03:54 PM (GMT)
Any tips? My pushoff sucks sucks. I either get only one card, or more than two.
Picking up from the back of the deck or with two hands is not really nice.
What's the key?
Pressure of the thumb?
Other fingers?
Worn out cards?

I do a liftoff with my thumb from the back and it looks fine, never been asked before unless the spectator actually has some small knowledge of magic and knows/has heard about the dl. I personally prefer the liftoff as it looks more natural to me than pushing cards off.
However, going back to topic, it may be more practice, doing it slower first as well as the condition of the cards.

Do it as if you are doing "double push off 2nd deal" but from an angle.
>> Other fingers?
For me I use my middle finger as well...
>> Worn out cards?
Hmmmm....
For me I prefer new deck to do double push off DL
but normally, I use strike DL because I don't like the double push off DL turn over...

Thanks for the tips guys...

Haha! :P
There are others like the Thumb Count and Pinky count. They well.... use the thumb and pinky to er..... count? Pinky count is harder (unless ur pinky has strength in it, mine doesn't!) and thumb count does require a bit of misdirection since when executing it, it faces the audience.
Hope u understand what i mean!!!

Here is something interesting to ponder about.
My 2 cents, I usually think it does not make much sense if you'll lift up
a card and then put it back on top of the deck only to take it again to
put it... for example into the middle of the deck ( for acr routines ).
What do you think?

Jennifer, strengthen your pinky by riffle the corner of the deck...
I believe you'll execute the move after a month or two
>> thumb count does require a bit of misdirection since when executing it
You can use misdirection however as long as you watch your angle you can execute it anytime without the need of misdirection...

If you use strike DL, double push off DL, DL using thumb count (1 handed from the corner) and pinky count
There are no movement of lifting the card up...
That movement only will be seen when you execute thumb count using obth hands...

Much appreciated Samuel!

For me strike DL is the best, you can do a DL anytime if needed :)
I practice my strike DL whenever i'm holding cards, watch tv etc..

Hmm its hard sometimes to explain it ;) . Why not think this way.
Why we have to take out cards to show them magic?
Why we cannot take anything out and vanish it in front of their eyes?
Why we have to ask those people to take a card when they can actually think of the card?
Why mentalist must bend spoons by rubbing on the metal? Can't they just bend it using their mind?
It's sleight of hand :)
If you want to achieve an effect that the card is clearly shown in the middle of the deck only to appear on top of the deck without sleight of hand its impossible unless is gimmicked.
PS: Svengali is the best :)

Stripper and Invisible deck also. :D
Anyway, I second szehowe about the strike DL. It's one of favourite DLs around but I haven't tried it during performance, only in practicing :( . For the former, the one that tops my list is the thumb count, it's as simple as counting two cards.
PS: I used to use the DL used by David Blaine where he pushes two cards together from the top left corners of the deck clockwise and rotating them over (I haven't known its technical term) and that's one of the best DL, visually. But you have to parctice your angle with this just to conceal the fact that they are two cards, it's very difficult to explain in words but if you try this in front of mirror you'll definitely get what I mean.
And also, search "diving board double lee asher" on YouTube. You'll knock your head and definitely want to practice this in the future.
That's my $0.02
(I just realized I'm out of topic).

Thumb count is a bit hard at the beginning, the first time i tried to make a DL with that sleight,
I didn't got the DL, but i got the TL (Triple lift)
Basicly it sucks, well, GOOD LUCK!!

Well buddy... say not that.. say not that. Well, don't say that, even those westerners who've been spending their lifetime in this beautiful art do not know what they are supposed to know. It is okay not to know other version of tricks or sleights rather than knowing lots of tricks or sleights but not practicing them. :D
PS: I am surprised that many professionals have not heard of the Rama deck.

DBD is awesome...
I've been practicing the aerial one quite a bit. Sometime finding it hard to land square with the deck but, it is really fun to practice.
Also working on Pinky Counts....
