Title: New Tricks
Description: Let's discuss it

Raynour - January 3, 2008 08:03 AM (GMT)

Okay, here's the plan, rather than just learning new tricks, why don't we gather our Best of the Best magician in MMF to make a new Trick\Sleight.

Visualized, a trick under MMF name

Instead of wasting your time doing that, I advise you to spend time practicing to perfect your basics....
It'll do a lot more for your current self...

i sorta agree.... if u wan to make new trick/sleight then maybe should get with a couple of friends and start brainstorming

Try to imagine what you want to do with a pack of cards, the basic effect.
Then do it with the most obvious or simple method possible.
After that, develop a cover for the obvious movement.
When the cover is sufficient to escape detection, fine tune the entire
sleight/effect with patter and presentation and.... whoala!
you have something there :)

I thought of something, thought I just invented something. This was when I first started out in magic, it was badly executed (I thought that it was flawless), posted it on YouTube and receive comments about them.

It was the Hermann pass, guys!

Not bad for a start.

A few months after that, I came up with the King levitation.

Not bad, right?

Great guys!!, i guess we all have our own new\modified tricks.

I myself had modified a few tricks and think new sleight of my own,
I'm not trying to waste anyones time, and i didnt said that we should never improve our basis, what i'm trying to do here is to made MMF more wellknown
To the foreigners magicians, if we made New Tricks, New sleight, under MMF names, and when other magician, perhaps a newbie learn these tricks, they might say, "Here's a cool trick that i just learn, it's from MMF".

Simple

That's the point behind this,

And the last but not least, here's a word of wisdom.

Kita jangan sekadar mendengar kajian orang lain,
Kita juga seharusnya menjadi pengkaji.

[SIZE=1]psst, if you think this kinda stupid, well, i won't blame you.

Amane - January 6, 2008 01:42 PM (GMT)
wouldn't you rather have a trick credited to you rather than a group?
Crediting to a group is usually where it gets muddled up.

How would you actually teach newbies your tricks anyway?
You'll have to publish your material in some book or something
Just putting out a video won't suffice.

As I said in my earlier post, instead of worrying about creating new tricks or sleights you should spend more of your time practicing and playing around with your old stuff....
Thats seems to be the biggest problem nowadays is that people just don't like practicing anymore.
Vernon always said if you don't like practicing your magic over and over, you should find a different hobby.....because practice should be fun
If you continuously practice your basics and current material, it will naturally evolve to a handling that suits you and something you could essentially call your own, maybe even come across one or two new sleights in the process of modifying a trick to suit your personal style....

If you're a newb stop wasting your time thinking of new stuff and get your basics down before you even think of creating something new....
Feel free to bash if you want.

While I encourage and applaud efforts at thinking up your own magic, I must remind everyone that this is a public forum.

Be careful when discussing, it might lead to exposure, copyright infringements, plagiarism, etc.

Good luck, though.

The MMF forums is a PUBLIC forum. If you wanna brainstorm a new trick, meet up personally, use email or do it outside the forums.

We do not take magic secrets lightly, we do not agree magic secrets are to be shared with EVERYONE, especially on an open forum. We are against exposing magic secrets, even if the effect is yours to give away.

And don't tell people you learned it from the MMF forums. People will think we support exposure. 95% of the time you think the effect you though of is original, it isn't.

I agree with Amane. Why on Earth would you want to credit your creation to a group of people you've never met. As this is an open forum, you never know who's lurking around & what will happen in the future. Think far ahead, bro.

And is this a Malaysian thing or is it just the way things are right now. Everybody wants to know how to do the more advanced thing, without getting the basics down properly. Everybody wants to know the cooler moves, but they never practice the old & basic sleights/move. It's like trying to do a slam dunk but don't even know how to dribble (a ball, not cards).
I say, practice the basic move/sleight & as time goes by, the more advenced ones will be a lot easier. I believe that once you've got the basics nailed, it would be easier to create new moves too.

So, i think if you want to brainstorm about new tricks or sleights, do it with people that you know. Group together & discuss at your place, not here. This forum should be a place for you to get information, comments & advice. If someone wants to learn, teach them discreetly(e-mail, etc).

Yea... if you do it here. I will be rich before you even publish your work. Then you'll be talking about E's latest release... :D

David Loh - January 9, 2008 01:41 AM (GMT)
I would recommend if you've come up with something, don't release it
to the public. Just perform it. Hone it for years and make it truly your
trademark.

Creating magic and pushing it out to the public ASAP is not what this
hobby/profession is all about. Sure, you've got great ideas or something
you want to show to be acknowledged by your peers, but to bare all
secrets is not the way. Just upload a youtube performance vid and we're
all happy :)
