Title: Any Tips For The Beginner?

David Loh - January 9, 2008 02:50 AM (GMT)
Recently I've been trying to pick up some skills in card flourishing,
especially cuts.

Its been around 2 months, I'm not sure when, but someday I'll
flick my deck into the toilet bowl out of frustration soon.

The packets get dislocated and cards keep dropping.
I don't even practice standing up infront of a mirror.
( Picking up cards from standing position is a chore... )

Any tips from the pros here? Finger strength? or is there
something I don't know yet?

Maybe you straight away learn those harder cuts. You should master basic first, then harder cuts. And don't give up. When everyone started flourish, same thing happened. Practise practise and practise. You will eventually get it, and you will like on top of the world when you can do it. Anyway, I'm still not a pro.

~Cheers~

I don't do many flourishes, but it took me like half a year to learn the Hot Shot Cut, and its still not 100%. So, yeah, just keep practising, no shortcuts to it bro. :)

I think I figured out part of the solution.

Practice in small parts and single moves instead of the entire cut.

Cheers all :)

And practice while sitting.

I practice while sitting on my bed. Easy to pick up dropped cards and the cards don't get nicks and bumps when I drop them.

Don't practice just anywhere. Remember, when you drop cards, they pick up dirt and grit.

Cheers

I wouldnt really say that. I'd say practise in the position you will be in when you are performing.

If you usually perform magic standing up, then practise standing up, If you usually perform sitting down, then practise sitting down. The feeling of performing standing up and sitting down is quite different.

Agree with this. Depends on the situation when you're performing. But when you're better, you can practise while sitting, standing or even lying

when i first started, i practice when im sitted down, especially on my bed so it is easy to pick up my cards, then i progressed to sitting down on my computer table and then these days Ive been mainly just standing up and practicings.... but of course, when im standing... i do the cuts i can do well only... and once in a while i'd do a hard one but try not to drop them.. haha....
