Title: My Magical Experience

Ken - February 26, 2008 06:33 AM (GMT)
Alright, last Saturday my friends' church had this BBQ event, and I went there to do walk-around magic.

Actually it can be considered my first "official", walk-around, magic performance. Yes. I've done few performances before, but it wasn't really performances. More like showing people I could do tricks with cards.

So that Saturday night, I dressed up nicely, brought 4 decks (2 unopened, 1 local, 1 Bicycle) and a marker... incase I need to use them. I went there and one of my friend said to me, "Dude, you over-dressed lar" and well... I guess I am. But later on I kinda telling people I'm here as a magician, and they were... "oh, cool". So, they got this introduction/ice breaker session and after that we went down for BBQ.

It was a BBQ event, but I was there for doing magic... haha. So I took out my Bicycle deck and went to look for potential spectators, went to them and said "Hi everyone. Wanna see some magic?" And the response wasn't really "Oh! COOL!!!", they were just okay with it. So I perform few simple tricks (they select a card and I find their card, and reveal in various ways).

Note, that is the first ever time I do magic card tricks with a Bicycle decks, and I don't even practise doing my tricks with the Bicycle deck! So I was actually taking a very big chance, as I'm not used to Bicycle deck.

But because I dressed up really good (pants, long-sleeve shirt with blazer) and looked like a magician myself, my confidence was really high boosted. Haha, I did my tricks to few groups of people, and it was all flawless.

My DL is not exposed (using Bicycle deck), my hands didn't turn cold, didn't shake and didn't sweat! (those are my common problems).

It was just great!

There was this time, I was doing a trick to this girl, where she choose a card and I had to find it. Somehow I lost track of her card, and I showed the wrong card. And amazingly, my brain came out with a good cover up, that is...

"Oh sorry, I lost focus because I kept looking at you"

Haha. Then I restarted the trick and nailed it. I think due to the "magician personality" I carried to the BBQ event, I act and think differently. I went to my friend and her friends, and before I could start doing my tricks, she asked me "Have you seen my bro?" and I told her "You shouldn't be asking a magician this question" .. And later her bro came out of no where and I said "There I made him appear". Haha. Sure they didn't really enjoyed my joke, whether it's funny or not.

And at the same time I was blocking the light, where they were BBQ-ing. The fella asked us to move away, and I joke again... and said "Hey, I'm the spotlight here"

Well, I think he wasn't in the mood to joke at that time. Well, I did my tricks, and moved on to the next group.

There was this girl (I know I know, why girls no boys... well, the memorable lines only during my performance with the girls... haha), and I did some finding her card, and etc... she said it's so common. Her friends and cousins show her always. Then I asked her if she seen before the trick where the card jumps to the top (ACR) and she said no. So I showed her... and it was flawless (phew!) and later she said, " (forgot what's the front part she said) ... prepare something more cun next time" and I don't know if she realised, but I said "Something more cun? You lar" and walked away. Haha.

Well. I'm sure I sounded pretty exciting and all. Yes indeed I am. But honestly, it sounds great but the responses I got from them all... weren't really great. I mean, they all are just "oh, cool" .. or .. "where did you learn that?" etc.. cold response. I was expecting some screams or shouting... but no, I didn't get those reactions. Haha... nevertheless... I am feeling really good on that day.

Before this, I felt great from the reaction I got. But this time, although the reactions weren't that great, I think I felt good because everything was smooth, and I was a Magician that night. Not just a kid who knows magic and trying to show some tricks. Haha.

My friend said I was really high that night (to me, it was "enthusiastic", not high) and another said I made them (the spectators) laugh. I don't know about it, but if that is what he observed, then cool, I managed to entertain them.

Haha. And soon after the BBQ, I had to leave early because I got another open house to attend. Again, I was like over-dressed that night, but later told them I'm here as a magician, they were all, okay...

But in that open house I just performed to my friends. Was tired and the feeling of approaching people... wasn't there anymore. Haha. I think performing too much will get bored as well. So I just enjoyed with my friends at the open house, nothing much really.

Being a magician and able to entertain people... it just feels so good. Haha.
