Title: Events By Others
simonskp - April 7, 2008 03:56 AM (GMT)
Dear Mod, as far as i understand MMF is a free community and public forum for magician and hobbyist in Malaysia, what I dun understand is that why must we lock those thread that discuss on events organised by other parties. Izzit because we are afraid that they will manipulate the MMF members ?
for outstation people MMF is where we get news of magic and I hope that it will continue to provide the infomation that we need.
regards,
Simon

Exactly
Sucahyo is also a member in MMF
He is informing us that there will be such gathering and if we see him there, we can say hi to him.

Malaysia Magic Festival 08, on 8th. June is near... See you there!! I heard from the organizer, this year will be more fun and more cool competition participant, from Korea, etc. Can not hardly wait huh.... ;o) If you meet me there, please say hi...
take care, Cahyo |
It can be seen as a form of members gathering
I don't see any elements of advertising.
I might be wrong, but I need to point it out.
Just my 2 cents.

Hi Simon,
To briefly answer your queastions :-
First and foremostly, the Malaysia Magic Fellowship is privately owned. It belongs to someone (not me), so in a sense its a "free community" as there is no membership or anything but it is privately owned free community. All this stems from the owner's goodwill.
2ndly, the reason we lock posts by other parties is to avoid the MMF being a notice board for others. If others want to use the MMF to make an announcement, they can. News of magic happenings can still be posted here, and if you or any other member want to talk about a gathering you attended which is organised by any other party, its ok, you can.
We just want to avoid the scenario where people join the forums, hype up their business /event, and then disappear. We just want to avoid the scenario where the forums are exploited just because we are free.
The reality of it is this :-take an ad up in the papers, you have to pay. Create your own website, and register your own domain name and lease bandwidth space you have to pay and then after paying all that money, that doesnt even ensure you get the publicity you want.
If others want to promote their own events or have discussions about their events, they should do it on their own, or by means of having their own forums/website or send out fliers or posters or whatever. The promotion of their events should be by them at their costs. Not ours. I know its cruel, but thats the reality. If its free, it will be exploited.
I hope this answers your question.

Perhaps, but I wasn't replying with regards to Suchahyo.
The rules were meant to be applied across the board.
Perhaps I made a mistake in closing Suchayo's thread. I dont like this any more than you guys, and I've better things to worry about in my life that whether to lock the thread or not.

Haha.. I know that you have better thing to do than to sit around to wait for post to block and I understand that MMF is concern that it will be exploited and someone needs to control the thread that is being posted. As for me I agree that MMF should not allow people to misuse it for personal business purpose, but as for public events such as Malaysia Magic Festivals and others, I do not see anything wrong with it. I believe that MMF should support all these public events in order to promote MAGIC in our country.

I agree with Simon.
I might be mistaken, but I think suchayo is not the organiser of the event, so he gains nothing in advertising/hyping anything.
I do understand the rational behind the locking of event promotion threads which are for business hyping purposes.
However, all events will be for money making purposes, be it Genting International Magic Festival, Subang Asian Magic Festival, etc etc. But the members here (or what's left of them), do rely on forums like this one to get to know about magic events happening in Malaysia. If they are unable to obtain such information, or even to post about such an event in MMF, they might not come here anymore.
There will be no place for the members to express how much fun they had during last years Magic festival or convention.
Sadly, Jeff I don;t have a solution to suggest to you. I guess it's just up to the forumites to judge for themselves if an event is over hyped or not, simmiliar example is the forumites have to judge for themselves if the stuff traded in the market square is genuine or not. It falls on the credibility of the poster.
You can't please everyone, its the sad truth.

Same here....
I do not own MMF. I basically started this forum with the owner (from SMC).
ANd the reason for a forum in Msia is to get to know more magicians in our country and to have a fellowship amongst magicians here....
Personally, I am totally OK if someone from outside comes here and tells us abt a magic club out there and has something to organise or some news to tell us. I dont see anything wrong with it.
MMF should be for everyone who loves magic and who wants fellowship with other magicians... not caring where they are from.
Being away from Msia these days.. im really interested to hearing what the magic scene is like in msia. I am happy to hear there are clubs and more clubs have emerged and to hear them organising events etc.. it's really good and i strongly encourage you guys to go and join them and go and experience it.
Yes, MMF can have it's own meeting and gatherings... but i dont think any of us are so free and so big to be able to organise one with big celebrities in magic to come and do lecture etc etc.
As magicians and lovers of the art, we can help to give our support magic in malaysia. It will be great to see new talents in the art...
Keep it up guys... do let us know of any good magic events coming up in msia.
MMF is not a business.. we dont earn profits etc... we dont need to act like we are so big and that dont care abt other people's magic events... We need to be more open abt things. Sure, we are MMFers or MMF members... but lets get out of the box and get to know more people outside our community and help others to get strong in the art.
I totally agree with what Yin Howe said... MMF is a forum and it shows that people come here to post and how one can be active is to express and give their testimonies and share experience that have gone through. It is events and meetups and new ideas that will make MMF more active and a better place.
MMF is v dear to me and it has been ever since I started magic and it will always be...
Have a positive mind and lets work together and stand up for our magician friends and support the art.
Go go go....

Although this thread is pretty old, I still want to clarify this bit.
1) This is where I think most misunderstand that rule we put in. The forumites are free to talk about it. Go on, post about how cool it was or how much it sucked. We just don't want organisers to use the forums as their marketing or propaganda tool.
2) Yes it is. Learned it the hard way. ;)
