Title: Purpose Of Card Collection
Description: why spend so much & let it collect dust?

Brendan Low - June 2, 2005 12:31 AM (GMT)
g'day peeps,

im a card collector but sometimes i just wonder why i collect them? am i like gonna wait the value to go up and then sell them? answer is no. so then, why do i collect them? hmmm.... just to show people? to display as a collection item?

if show people, only magician or card collectors understand. if show laymen, they dunno how to appreciate its worth. lol. at the moment, my cards are just laid in the shelves in card boxes.since its in boxes, there's nothin much to display is there?

anyway, im plannin to oneday get a glass shelve or cupboard (something like those u see people store their crystal swans and glass stuff), with yellow or white light shinning fm above... hehe that would make it classy. hehe.. but it means more money spent there...

also, some cards i buy more than 1 (bikes, tally ho, alladins) coz i change one every 3-4 weeks or so.

others like BTD, and other special decks, i cant always buy more than 1 of each variety as it would cost heaps! lol... so i wonder should i use or not? lol... i like flourishing, so i like to use a variety of decks. if i only do magic, i dont think i would really have urge to collect as i dont see a use of these super stylish decks.

hehe.... im sure u guys have ya own say abt this matter.. would surely like to hear ya opinions dudes.

Cheers,
MagicB

ive been doing lots of dribbles and fanning and cutting my newly opened BTD. hehehe.. its time to put them to good use. they are tough cards.. so its meant to be handled that way :P

ChongWei - June 2, 2005 04:13 AM (GMT)
somehow, i think BTD is better quality than normal bike.. correct me if am wrong..
yea... i do spring them , fan them , tame them , and CONQUER them.. but.. sometimes, when u spend some money on a single deck, the more u spring, your heart gain more pain..

Brendan Low - June 2, 2005 06:40 AM (GMT)
yes BTD is surely much more stiffer and better quality than normal bikes.

hey afoi, how abt the vipers? how they feel? are they much like the BTDs?

im willing to go rough on my BTD as i still have one more unopened.. hehe... but yeah.... it still hurts a bit when its dented lol...

wow....

argh... make just wanna buy.. lol....

i dunno how to use ebay.... is it trustworthy? etc etc.... anyone use e-bay or a card collector. wish to share anything?

Brendan

ChongWei - September 1, 2005 02:08 AM (GMT)
eBay is a good source of getting rare decks... but.. beware of the shipping cost... to me.. i only buy deck from ppl who accept pay pal... bcos, if u using wester union or W.T , u're not protected by eBay, so.. any fraud.. will bear at your own cost.... rare deck is not always there... so... last time..i used to grab every deck i saw there!

g'luck guys!

Jeff - September 1, 2005 04:30 AM (GMT)
i dont have so much $ to collect cards.. i only have 2 tally hos fan back (red n blue), 1 viper fan back, 4 bikes (2 red & 2 blue), n 12 tigers (6 white n 6 red).. is this card collection?? i wanna get more vipers n ghost!!

Brendan Low - September 1, 2005 04:46 AM (GMT)

Jeff - September 1, 2005 05:27 AM (GMT)
i got the tigers from penguin last time n they sold for less then $5 only..
i like both equally. but i need to have at least 1 more viper n some ghost..

Peter - September 1, 2005 12:37 PM (GMT)
i personally don't collect cards... every single deck i buy i just use them...

Jeremy Soon - September 1, 2005 01:28 PM (GMT)
I guess you can say collection cards are a hobby. Just like collecting stamps or first day covers or coke cans and bottles. THe value might go up in future or it might not, it's just a matter of hobby. Your interest, I haven't got any cool BTD or Viper decks, planning on gettin them soon, but I do feel the pain when you open the new deck of cards and start abusing them...hehe...

Andrew Loh - September 1, 2005 03:09 PM (GMT)
Well, one word: "Just for fun"!!! :P

Seriously, collecting cards just like just a hobby, there are no reasons, well just for me to give, maybe I would say the "Satisfaction" of collecting them, you would feel proud as well in your collection.

My 2 cents! ^_^

Andrew

Brendan Low - September 1, 2005 03:31 PM (GMT)
yeah... some would think its crazy but if u think its worth collecting.. i guess then its worth it...

can display next time... so nice....

I can only imagine...

so.. u another card collector ?? ya.. i agree with u.. collecting deck.. is really.. hmmphh.. weird to others.. i got so many decks everywhere in my house.. yet.. shame on me..i hardly practise my magic... but.. its just that... sometimes.. when i re-look ya collection.. i feel excited and happy with it.. i dunno.. i guess its just me... (and ANDY!! and mindfreak!!!!.. hehehe)

Brendan Low - September 2, 2005 12:19 AM (GMT)
hehe yeah... ive spoken to few regarding card collections...

vintage cards collection are much more difficult to get and people would pay big bucks for it. They have unique queen and king designs.... v traditional kinda look.

for me, im not so much into these cards. I go more for USPC cards, especially bikes. That is wat i wanna collect lol... and there's lots of nice looking bikes out there. :)

yeah afoi, its worth looking back at ya cards once in a while to appreciate its value. It may not be worth much now... but think abt like 20-30 years time.... will be classic! :)

Andrew Loh - September 2, 2005 01:55 AM (GMT)
Do you guys collect plastic cards??? :P

Andrew

Andy - September 2, 2005 04:20 AM (GMT)
it depends on the type of plastic cards :)

Kem ones have a nice back, but the ones being sold in Singapore 7-11s with the brand name "Royal" kinda looks ugly lol

Not to mention the new Bike Plastic Backs!!

Yup, Vintage decks are highly expensive stuff, One of the Fiorente costs a min of USD$180 but those are mainly for people into artist kinda deck collections. I mainly collect Casino related decks, bikes, bees, and the likes. Tho from time to time. I collect novetly decks too.

Usually, the main concern when choosing decks to collect has to do with pricing and the back designs.

For me, Jerries are way off my budget!! Altho i would love to have a set. :!!: Anyone wilng to sponsor me?

Casper Der - September 2, 2005 07:05 AM (GMT)
Hi to all ,

What deck that you feel the back look most nice ?

Jerry's back looks normal like cartoon , but i found that when use it for flourish , it become so nice ... nice look ...

Casper ..

Brendan Low - September 3, 2005 02:34 PM (GMT)
i dunno abt looks but i like the looks of tally ho fanbacks.

but have always enjoyed using bikes... both riders and leagues... i prefer leagues better for its softness and touch.

bikes... riders or leagues... i like the design and also got so many types of colours available etc.... which makes them my favourite cards of all.

So yeah bikes and tally hos for their looks and finishes.

Jerrys.. for their stricking blue and yeah heard it handles well too... i wish i had one lol..

Brendan

ChongWei - September 3, 2005 05:27 PM (GMT)
to me.. tally seems like last longer.. so do bee... lately.. been into arcco... not too bad... maybe u guys should try to play with it.. i guess its cheaper.....

Jeff Gan - September 6, 2005 06:53 AM (GMT)
i collect novelty cards. managed to get a deck of Lord of the Rings playing cards last week.

Ning - September 6, 2005 07:08 AM (GMT)
Me too :) But the 2 different sets I got for LOTR was from Golden Village... is yours like a pure authentic LOTR deck? Heh... I can't wait for the mini ghost deck to come out next month. They look so nice :P

JamesTong - September 6, 2005 09:46 AM (GMT)
Just like to find out the difference between original bikes from USA and those made in Taiwan. Comments appreciated as I need valid info for my card collection hobby.

For every deck of cards I write a details on them - its origins, the manufacturers, etc and most importantly whether they are pirated or not. All serious card collectors do this kind of management work.

Guys, hope you can enlighten me on Taiwan Bikes.

Thanks ... James Tong

Kennard - September 6, 2005 11:17 AM (GMT)
To me, the difference between my bicycle rising card deck ( from US ) and the bicycle i bought for RM 16 is the colour. The latter is brighter. Texture is somewhat the same. ;)

JamesTong - September 6, 2005 12:30 PM (GMT)
Thanks mclarenf1 foryour input. Really appreciate it.

Any other input will be truly appreciated too.

Jeff Gan - September 6, 2005 01:39 PM (GMT)
ning,

my bro got them for me from singapore.
I dunno where its from.

its got blue backs with the ONE ring on it.
the Joker is Gollum.

is it the same as yours?

Andy - September 6, 2005 03:46 PM (GMT)
Cool LOTR decks!!

I have a set too, that comes in a limited ed tin with a sticker inside that says

"35763 of 75000"

The box is green in color with a ring in the centre (seems like all have rings in the centre tho)

Never opened yet so do not know if they are blue backs.

Cheers!! ^_^

Paul Long - September 7, 2005 12:27 AM (GMT)
never knew card collecting was so "complicated" ;) If someone like James Tong, who from his posts and introduction has been around cards and magic a very long time and takes this very seriously ... and yet may not know some of the finer details of differences (if nay) of just Bikes from one country to the other .... how in the world is someone like me going to figure all these things out! :(

Good thing I am not into card collections!

BTW, I remember when my kids were into the pokemon craze ... and there were all minds of fake cards on the market and there were books / magazines explaining the different kind of pokemon cards (limited editions etc). Isn't there in existence such a guide book?

Jeff Gan - September 7, 2005 01:27 AM (GMT)
paul dude,

I saw this kid the other day who bought 1 pokemon card at RM 60++.

i never knew they were soooooooooooooo expensive!!!

James,
I read up from some forum some months ago.. they have this post.. to help the forum user to identify their bike if its "A" / "B" class .. its something to do with the card case... but i cant really remmeber.. i'll search for it once i have time...

Btw, not sure about the colour, I guess the colour issue might due to the batch of the printing... just my 2 cent..

p/s : James, mind to share ya card collection? any snap shot?

[UPDATE]
I've found the link.. its some chinese site....
http://www.superx.org/club/Announce/Announ...&p=6&q=1&r=5518

1. The bar code on the LEFT side on the box, is US version. Others in RIGHT.

2. The lid of the box, smaller == US. Others, longer.

3. The extra card. With 2 rules cards, its from US, others come in 1red1blue adv card.

The source of this information is unknown.. so, take it as reference if u think its reliable... g'luck...

Brendan Low - September 7, 2005 03:43 AM (GMT)
yeah... its hard to judge from colours as we know that different batch of card (even from same maker) may have variation in colour shade.

i wonder besides colour wat else can we look at or feel to distinguish them?

Hello PaulMagic,

There ae guide books around where we can use them for references - materials include playing cards and also all kind of single trading cards. These books are available in amazon.com

JamesTong - September 7, 2005 10:08 AM (GMT)
Hello everyone,

The reason I am asking about the differences for the bikes is - there is just too mu piracy from China. I've got plenty of cards from China and to my dismay most of them are pirated, including BEEs. I've yet to get my hands on pirated Bikes or USPC cards.

I have friends who are my playing cards suppliers - they travel all round the world for business and they know nuts about cards. They just buy whatever comes across their path. Disappointingly they bought a lot of pirated ones for me. So these pirated cards are now my references to compare with original ones.

Paul Long - September 7, 2005 10:58 AM (GMT)
Wow ... one day I must actually see close up some of your card collections. My interest is now getting piqued though not enought to want to invest in a card collection. ;) The only playing cards I am collecting are MAS cards from whoever will give them to me (free so I can use them for tricks that require defacement). If I ever collect enough I might be able to me many sets of one way force decks

Oh yes I have 5 decks of spiderman playing cards (the ones Summit shop selling for RM 10). Bought them for RM 1.80 each in Mentakab :D Makes nice presents to give kids.... Talking about pirated playing cards ... hmmm.... I suppose my spiderman cards must be pirated as well.

As for even thinking of buying a guide book from Amazon.com hehehe I think I'll pass. But I would love to browse through such a book one day.

Hello PaulMagic,

You will have the chance of taking a look at my entire collection. I'm currently taking photos of my card collection (scanning every card because each one of them are different - especially the european and russian cards) and upload them on one of my websites.

Paul, you will also get the chance to read e couple of reference books I am getting in from all over the world. One of them is costing me RM1,000 + while the others are a few hundred each.

When you guys jam with me in my place later, you all will have the chance and opportunity to witness many things from me.
