Title: New To The World Of Magic And Also This Forum...
Peter - June 6, 2005 03:00 PM (GMT)
Hey ya'll. My name is Peter. My magic interest started about 2 years ago but i was always too lazy and always have no guidance and where i should go or started learning. Just yesterday, I was watching mondo magic (and david blane about 3 weeks ago)on Astro and then i suddenly picked up my lazy flesh and went online to see where i can get some help and WAH LAA.... i found this forum and i was so excited that i signed up as a member ( the 70th member) and started reading all the replies posted in this forum. Hope that i can get help from all whos in this forum.
Oops... I think i've gotten so excited that i forgotten to introduce myself. My name is Peter from Klang but i always use Kenningst as my cyber nickname. I am 24 and is currently working in KL. I have zero knowledge about magic and so pls pls don't screw me if i ask something stupid about magic.
To get things started, can someone pls explain to me what flourish mean? I have seen this term so many times but don't have a clue what it means. and the word xcm??
To RAIN KING: Really would like to get the Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic that u talked about in the other topic. Mind telling me where i can get it? RM 70 is already in my hand right now waiting for your reply.
To ERYANIC: Saw that u recommended Firestarters by Jay Sankey and also Flirting with magic by Micheal Jefferys. How good is the book and how much that it cost?
To ZHUANAN: Does your offer that u gave to MagicT still open and applies to all? really need a GURU to show me the path of light....
hope to hear from you guys soon...

Hello peter!
Erm I have not watched them , so I can't tell. They are DVDs btw, not books.
And you would need to have some skills in magic to do the stuff in there, so would suggest you get books/DVDs that teach you the basic in magic first..:)
zhuanan - June 6, 2005 04:21 PM (GMT)
And hence, here comes the recommendations:
Card Magic:
1) Royal Road to Card Magic (Book) - I have a copy which I would

Coins:

IT
1) Jon Le Clair's Who's Afraid of Invisible Thread DVD
2) Michael Ammar's Easy to Master Thread Miracles
Mentalism:
1) Pratical Mental Magic (Book)
2) 13 Steps to Mentalism (Book)
Flourish/Extreme Card Manipulation:
1) As stated by MagicB
Impromptu Magic:
1) On the Spot by Gregory Wilson
2) Off the Cuff by Gregory Wilson
3) Tom Mullica's Expert Impromptu Magic Made Easy
Gambling:

hey zhuanan, you are confusing me man. am i suppose to read every single one of them before i could start learning my first skill?? which one do u think is suitable for newbie like me, huh?
everytime i see u post something online, u are always trying to sell something. makes me wonder if u work as a sales man in MPH or Borders trying to reach your monthly quota or something... btw.. just a joke..
zhuanan - June 8, 2005 12:16 PM (GMT)
hahaha.....u are very funny....unfortunately I am not a dealer in Magic items...otherwise that would be great man.... ^_^
The recommendations given (personal opinion ya...) are those materials that you can pick up for a specific area of magic that u may be interested at...
Do u know which area u are interested in? Or are u currently deciding which area u would go into?
If u are not sure, usually people would say get some materials which contains a mixture of all the effects, for example:
1) Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic
2) Idiot's guide to Magic
3) The Amateur Magician's handbook
Are u picking up the no "1)" from Rainking btw?
Go for the meeting during this weekend la...get them to show u their favourate tricks...and u will see what effects u like based on the level of astonishment u get....
Beware yor...some effects can make u jump and scream on the spot...some would make u utterly speechless...and some will render u unable to sleep...and of course, some can make u feel romantic as well.....
Also, if u go there...do check out Magic Ring as well....people there like Daniel, Tiong and "Kellop" (Spelling may be a bit out for the last one) are very friendly and will help to awaken the "Magician" in u in no time.....
Let them know that "Choo" introduced/ recommended u to come...Kellop can show u really good Whirling Boomerang card, Tiong can do very well long distance spinner, Daniel can present to you his favourate flying Ninja Shuriken card, all done with a normal deck cards....etc etc.....
Bet u would have a lot of "yen yee" after knowing all these "kiu"....if u understand Mandarin and Cantonese...hahaha.....
Peter - June 8, 2005 12:33 PM (GMT)
nice to see your reply that fast. anyways... i have no specific of interest thus far. still trying to see what i really want to master in...
will be at the meeting this sunday. are u going to be there?
I am getting number 1) but not from Rainking. think i am goin to buy it sometime this week...don't tell me you have a copy, and if you really do then i am going to label you the MMF official dealer...
I will be jotting down everything u have just posted and probably put a gun on these guy's head do that they show me their stuffs... otherwise... i will put one on yours... hahaha... :P
hahaha... well i understand mandarin, hokkien, kantonese, hakka ( unfortunately can write any chinese) eng, malay and some german.
Eric Liew - June 8, 2005 02:25 PM (GMT)
Hmm...I bought Mark Wilson's Cyclopedia of Magic mini version when I was 16. At that time I have not seen any kinda magic except those on TV...so it can be quite boring reading through that book without being able to see how good the tricks can be.
Perhaps you'll have to see it happening first...maybe u can go online search for demonstration of tricks (mvd? penguin?) but like what zhuanan said, best of all just go ask them to perform tricks to u...
Good luck!

kenningst,
i'm not selling my copy for Mark Wilson. Mine's been with me for more than 10 years.
When u meet up wif the guys on sunday, go to borders, can get a copy there.
Magic Ring ( a magic store) is also there, so u have a lot of options.
I'll try to make it but its still 50/50 at the moment.
