Title: The Next Step
Description: Finally Opening my Nuggets

30210162 - June 22, 2005 08:07 PM (GMT)
*yum... Chicken McNuggets...

NOTE: I wrote this lightheartedly at 4am, but I think this is VERY IMPORTANT for us, our art, and our country. So please take me seriously.

Check out this thread:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtop...=36&7&start=0#6

This is the MOST EMBARASSING thread I have seen. Not even me... the crazy maniacal, wannabe political correctness advocate, dares to start a thread about it...

Terlampau memalukan!!!

While we all thought of many possible solutions to this problem, I am ready to present, what I think would be the BESTEST idea I have come up with yet.

We need to come up with a... *drum roll*...

NATIONAL BODY REPRESENTING ALL MALAYSIAN MAGICIANS

Think about it.
- Football has FAM.
- Fishing has PeMM.
- Basketball has MABA.
- Tranvestites have PAS (Persatuan AhKuah SeMelaysia)
- Doctors have MMC/MMA
- Drivers have AAM
- Taxi's have their associations
- Lorry drivers
- Bus drivers
- nurses
- labourers (CUEPACS, MTUC)
- Engineers
- GT Girls
- etc etc etc

So what the hell is 30210162 talking about?

- Simply put, a national organisation needs to be registered with the Registrar of Societies.
- It has annual reports, AGM's, and it is LEGAL
- By Malaysian law, all groups, need to be REGISTERED, so that the government knows what we are doing. Illegal groups can be subjected to ISA.
- Of course not all groups (smaller ones, like MMF) do so. And of course government don't kacau us

So what can a National Body do?

- We can LOBBY for LAWS
- Laws that PROTECTS you and me, and protects the ART,
- We need REGULATION and ENFORCEMENT in our industry
- Lobbying cannot be done by one man. It needs groups. That's why there are so many NGO groups in this country
- Lobbying is the MOST important thing a NGO/association can do, but we can do other activities as well.
- Annual subscription can help us fund projects
- And, we can also lan si to the Singaporeans that we have BIG, NATIONAL, and LEGAL magic fraternity in Malaysia.... erm... maybe not.

30210162's (playful) suggestions:

- Malaysian Cardistry Association (MCA)
- Malaysian Illusionist Congress (MIC)
- PanMalaysian Ambitiouscard Society (PAS)
- Ambitious Card Association (ACA)

------------

I know it is a bloody ambitious project. But I still think it's easier done than the classic pass.

MODS: I would appreciate if you can sticky this, at least for 2 weeks. I really made an effort to write/think this and I do it with our best interest in mind.

NOTE: I know i wasn't 100% serious, but this is a bloody serious matter/suggestion.

Ah, f**k the law, I'm an anarchist! It'd be MUCH cooler if we're actually a super duper highly skilled underground magicians fellowship and is hunt down by the government for act of "extreme entertainment and bring happiness to people" because the government want us to be in fear in order for them to be able to control us and this a freaking run on sentence holy damn it's long!

Seriously speaking:

Great suggestion! But this group is not even a year old, so I think we should keep things to our control for now.

dok, u make us sound like the X-men.

seriously, i agree with dok and IMO i feel a fellowship is better than an organisation at this point.

Brendan Low - June 23, 2005 10:11 AM (GMT)
yups... fellowship is better now... wait until we get some status or get more recognised first, then perhaps then only can consider organisation. But for now MMF, a place for magicians to fellowship is good enough for me.

There is more to this world that just you.

Despite me hinting, we had to wait for a Singaporean to settle magic_man and his ebook.

All I am suggesting, is that we need ways to take care of each other, and the art.''

Of course it is not feasible now lah... just like... future... not too distant future... such a body would benefit all of us.

30210162, you posted this thread on a public forum that can be replied to. Brendan is entitled to his opinion as much as you do. Fellowship is good enough for him, it doesn't mean it has to be good for you too, but either way you should respect what is good enough for him. Apparently, as you can see so far several of use thought the same as Brendan, so I believe we should keep this as a fellowship first. There are many things to consider to make this fellowship a registered club or whatever, and it wouldn't be as easy as it sounds. SMC has evolved over some moons, and it's been known nationwide (even if it's only among magicians, but still). As for MMF, we still have our time, and as you pointed out on other thread, we're getting livelier everyday with our upcoming projects and such.

We had our babysteps, now we're having our walk, soon we'll run and fly.

And stop being too much of a nationalist ;)

Whoops. Again, I seem to have offended someone, again.

Oh well, allow me to elaborate.

1. My suggestion cannot be put into place until there is a need. I'm merely throwing ideas around.

2. "There is more to this world that just you" - This is where this thread is focus at. Not meant to attack nor focus MagicB. Ethics do not concern one magician but the entire Industry/Art.

3. "And stop being too much of a nationalist" - Doing otherwise is treason and subjected to punishment by death or life imprisonment. It says so in our constituition.

4. "Despite me hinting, we had to wait for a Singaporean to settle magic_man and his ebook"

I know magic_man was breaching a set of rules that MagicB put in place, but instead of saying, "OI... someone breaking your rules ah!!", which would make MagicB rather silly, I said it subtlely with his/everybody's best interest in mind.

I have nothing against Singaporeans. But why should we let our guest sweep up our rubbish?

5. Lighten up will ya? And read between the lines. McLuhan once said, "The Medium is the Message".

Peace. I hope this does not digress into another flame war with a (new) mod.

B)
Maybe because Aloy is not a "Guest"?

Strictly speaking, SMC and MMF are both running on the same "funds" (i.e. my wallet). So SMC and MMF are TRUELY sister sites in every sense of it. Except over here Brendan makes the major decisions. I'm just........a consultant B)

On the topic of an legal entity, i don't know about malaysia, but singapore has very tedious systems for society registration. But that's beside the point...
Singapore has 2 registered magic society, IBM and SAM. While they are very effective with meetings and activities, they are not particularly effective with influencing magic related issues locally. That's why piracy is also a problem here. Perhapes not as bad M'sia, but it's a problem. And they have both been around more decades.

I'm NOT saying that they are not doing anything. But it's often more difficult than you think, lobbying.

But thanks for the ideas and feedback.

Lol 30210162, I don't get offended easily ^_^ just so you know, I respect everyone on this forum equally (in fact, I REMEMBER your nick, just think of Beverly Hills and add 162). By responding in disaggreement to your post, that wouldn't mean I am offended, would it?

1. That aside, you should read what you wrote on point no. 1.
2. The focus of this thread, I believe if I can comprehend correctly, is your suggestion on having MMF to be a registered society/club/group. And as of now, this is STILL being discussed. You know my stance on your idea.
3. Aloy is not a guest, he's an admin. It's his money we're using and it's his time that we're taking for this site. I know how it feels, as I am also an admin of a band forum with more than 1000+ members. Really, you don't want anyone to disobey the rules and/or spam for several reasons i.e. bandwith.

ya know, I know we're all glad to have you here. And personally, I'm glad that you like to voice your opinion out. Freedom of speech is beautiful (something apparently we couldn't get if we become too much of a nationalist ;) but that's another point lol), but 30210162, you probably want to look at your choice of diction again. Since I first joined this place, everybody's been very polite with each other and fun, and I sure hope we keep it that way.

Speaking of lobbying (sorry for being off topic), I kind of know how hard it is. I have several friends who are a part of a well known environmentalist group, and it's a registered group as well.

If it has been easy, Indonesia wouldn't have to send some smoke to Malaysia and Singapore  (I personally am sorry for what my country has done to you guys har har!)
