The basic role of moderator is to ensure the smooth and cordial running of the forum, and to enforce the rules of the forum, especially the non-exposure and anti-piracy rules.
Ning wrote something for SMC's moderators previously which I am pasting here because i think is very comprehensive:


Your job as MMF's moderator ^_^

1. I Spy with My little Eye...

You've been given the forum to take care of. Make sure no one misbehaves on your turf. If they do, send your thugs after them. Yeah do the Godfather thing and make sure they never ever do the same mistake again. Kepech? Kepech.

...Or you can be nice and simply PM them after editing their posts, informing them on what they should and shouldn't do - concerning profanities, exposures, misconduct, etc.


2. Simple Techie Stuff

Yeah, it happens... people get chatty and the thread twists into something else. Either hit the delete button before it weaves into an unconnected love story or lore of old, or move the thread somewhere else and rename it accordingly.

It'd be great if you can do "housekeeping" once a week and delete away the crap. It's a sh*tty job but SOMEONE has to do it. *Ahem* You actually chalk up mod points by the amount of crap you delete... yup, there really is a track record! :g:


3. Thread Hype

If there's a lack of ra-ra happening on turf, you know what to do ;) Get more involved in your area and start something interesting so people can provide their 2 cents worth. Start a thread and get people involved. Don't make it D-E-D dead. We don't want one of the arms to die a 'natural death'.

Magic is your passion. Let that shine in your turf baby!!!! ;)


4. Assisting in MMF activities

Obviously you must have had something REALLY special that's why you were specially handpicked, examined, lab tested and atomically scrutinsed to be an MMF moderator.

Your assistance would be very much appreciated (*grin* I'm not twisting your arm behind your back... really... *ugh!*...I'm not!) for whatever SMC events we have. Granted no slave labour, but we'll need your help when we have certain events, like for instance, during the next MMF outing.


5. Be an Example for the other members (especially new ones!)

To avoid being called a hypocrite by others, pls try to set the right example by following our own forum rules. You know what it is. If you don't (shame on you!) go read Morphy's pinned topic on his rule of thumb(tip) nooooow!

Basically... make sure you don't sprout profanities. No thread hijacking. No talking crap. No flamming people. And proper English please... no annoying short forms and jargons that only a certain percentage of people would understand. We're trying to enforce this so please help.

And! If some really annoying bugger pisses you off, hey, you've got the given power to ban him for a couple of years... sorry, days... until things are cool. Depending on the situation of course. If it's less severe, you just give them a stern warning and tweak his levels.

But despire having such almighty powers, you should still remain nice and humble ;) That would be good.

We only ban people if they're seriously overstepping their bounderies and don't apologize or retract their statements (read: stubborn jackasses who insist they're right when they aren't). Give at least 3 chances by PMing him and requesting him to behave before taking action.

Use your IQ. If in doubt, bug Aloy ^_^ Or yours truly. Don't hesistate to be stern if you have to. You're simply just doing your job as a moderator.

Riighty... to end off, let me once again thank you for agreeing to sign your soul away... ahem, I mean, be a moderator of MMF... it's a welly welly welly cool job and all the kids will envy ya but remember...
