Title: Clinks From The Coins
Kam - June 24, 2005 06:24 AM (GMT)
As you all know,
I'm not an expert in coin magic, more like a beginner.
The thing that bugs me the most is when you're doing several coin vanishes and they just CLINK! man oh man it ticked me off. Do you guys have any suggestion on how to make them not clink? Or at least keep the sound low? Is there any special subtance that could transform the coin into rubber?
Any help appreciated.

No proper answer to your question on the sound of coins clicking BUT ... some of us were talkng about it a couple of weeks ago and we came up with a silly tongue in cheek solution.
When you dump a coin, say "tah dah" (covers the sound .. ) It might actually work in some situations :D

Ellu!
Hey Paul!! Heheh, yeah I remember that rather pathetic rouse to hide the clinks... ^_^
Anyway, you could try going for older coins (they're supposed to be rather 'soft', giving away less noise and clinks), but as a last resort, stuff a rather thick, unfolded hanky in your pocket, and with your hand in your pocket, drop the coins into the different folds of the hanky...
The last resort would be total control, ie dropping coins from classic palm one at a time, and placing them softly on the fabric of your pocket... Shucks
Any suggestions from others?? This coin part does seem rather quiet... And my "Spellbound" topic has been really cold since it started <_< Bahz.
Regards,
Shan

Thanks for the pointers :) Yea I've been having some trouble in keeping the noise down. The routine I'm currently practicing is Paul Wilson's Coin to Purse. At times, when the coins slide, they just make noise. Is there any way around it?
Shan, that's the great idea you have there. I'll stalk you and put a camera in your room to watch you practice coin...
... or may be not.

I agree with Shan, soft coins are the way to go about the clinking sound. But honestly, I don't think it matters too much. If you are performing outdoors you have nothing to worry about since the outdoor noises kinda hide the clinking sounds.

Shan:I think you should put your phobia past behind you and start taking it the streets. the next time we meet i am going to drag you out to perform :P
Canbeef - June 28, 2005 08:43 PM (GMT)
Yeah my man shan is really mean in coins. Most stuff i got is from him. And who says that shan hasnt hit the streets yet? He have had some performance before. Things that you can learn from shan is the natural'ness of his sleights and practicallity of his moves. He does great stuff.

Hehe, about this problem. The clink sound have pros and cons. One is that it makes thing visual and makes transfer more realistic.I dont know what tricks you do with the coins BUT,if you're doing a hand to hand coin transfer I would suggest you keep the coins apart and slowly bring them closer...Ince it tcouhes each other and makes the sound it also, at the same time makes them think as if the coin has JUST ONLY transferred from one hand to the other. Why?Coz first, got no sound...then when suddenly got sound it really convince them that the coin has just only transffered from one hand to the other. It makes an excellent illusion. The clink sound has more pros to it IF you put the sound to good use.Hope this helps dude
