Title: Orphanage Gig
Description: Interested?
30210162 - July 11, 2005 10:47 AM (GMT)
If I were to organise a gig in an orphanage, who would volunteer?
I was toying with this idea with a friend who works in an orphanage.
Obviously you won't be paid. Hopefully, you can derive rewards that are not material.
Since my performance sucks ass, I can act as a manager/logistics dude (certainly not the authoritarian type, unlike certain overzealous Singaporean forum moderators).
I want to saw afoi in half!!! Can teach me how to do???
*ahem...
So, any takers?
Adlan - July 11, 2005 10:50 AM (GMT)
i'd love to join up. i gotta think of more visual magic though, since its for kids.
Peter - July 11, 2005 02:18 PM (GMT)
sign me in and i think i can get jackliw into this as well since i need his magic suticase ^_^ cause its the show for the kids and he's the most appropriate cause 1) he's dealing with kids to make a living and 2) he's a visual and props guy
when and where is this orphanage thing? i don't want the money. i want to make kids happy... i will do this for free and my guess is that no one in MMF would take a money from an orphanage since money to them is scare.
jackliw - July 11, 2005 02:47 PM (GMT)
i will go if i have no any appointments. just let me know the time.
Kenningst u know me well, haha........
Kam - July 11, 2005 04:48 PM (GMT)
Sounds awesome. You guys should definitely do it, and yes as balaan mentioned, lean more towards visual magic (maybe card manipulations/productions?).
Right now I'm in Indonesia heheheh, enjoying my break. So you guys go ahead without me :)
Gensys - July 11, 2005 08:26 PM (GMT)
Well.. I also just beginner but would really like to go and see you guys perform.. so just let me know the date... if I don't have any important matter.. would certainly go...

30210162, make sure u come clean my graveyard every year if u want to see me in half...
Jeff Gan - July 12, 2005 01:25 AM (GMT)
302....
its a good suggestion.
if its a sunday, i may be able to make it (unless i fall sick again :( )
Paul Long - July 12, 2005 02:16 AM (GMT)
Date (Day) and time? Which orphanage? Location?
You guys can do the magic - from what i can gather you are way beyond me :( BUT I can come and do the balloon sculptures. It's always a HIT WITH KIDS. :D
But I am busy most weekends so a lot depends on the date and time.

Darren - July 12, 2005 09:55 AM (GMT)
Guys..i hav some suggestions..actually it's very good to do this..i put up my hands n also legs..hehe..the thing is, we can make it better! in the sense that, make it a MMF thing. We do it regularly instead of occasionally. We can perform in not only one orphanage but more, and also include old folks' home, nursing house, children ward. All these under the name of MMF. I think Vision can help in organising, and David in publicizing. What do u guys think?
Just my 2 cents

first, u must have enough ppl to participate constantly , which, most of us, need to work / study .... maybe if this O.gig have a big response, then we can consider some sort of monthly event or things like that ?

I hope people don't do "charity" in other to gain publicity.
UPDATE: Talked to my buddy, who volunteers in several homes of disabled and orphanages, and after he talks to the homes, will arrange with me details.
I will keep you boys posted.
I have set a target of 30 days to finalise things.
Afoi is also forced to be my assistant (Face it lah... you have no choice).
---
For now, can we throw ideas around?
- Do you guys want to do a structured gig? or like a massive walk-around thingy?
- Do you guys want to meet up to discuss details first? or Just-Do-It (as buiyen puts it)?
- I think bringing 20 odd guys for an orphanage of 20 kids is a bit of an overkill. Perhaps we need a 1:3 ratio. But what do you guys think?
- Duration of gig (1 hour? 2?)
- Get someone to sponsor some food and drinks?
I really appreciate ANY comments (yes, even from you Aloy) and help that you guys are willing to offer. I'm new to this, and I hope to make both MMF dudes and the kids happy.
Cheers! Going home from work di!

Peter - July 12, 2005 04:26 PM (GMT)
Hey 30210162, i like to make a comment. can u choose the location or venue in which the home is less fortunate than the other homes?? the reason i say is because as i have said i used to be involved in some charity work and i get to know that some homes has constant stream of money going into their homes and there are some which struggles even to get money to put food on the table. i can still pay a visit to them and have a day of activities but i think it is best to donate money to the homes that need it the most. :)
ok ok...my idea is as such since everyone is into it project...
i personally think that the more the merrier cause we can have activities going around which i think we need a lot of help. reason i said this is due to the reason below:-
1) magic performance- magic can be performed to the kids and also to the staffs. i think with this we need some ppl to do this stuff??can be a walk around thing..
2) we can have a games session with the kids. just some simple games but the interaction gives them a good impact
3) we need ppl to do do the ballon stuff- paulmagic, u are the man!!!
4) food and drinks preparation
5) some standby guys will always come in handy(in case they need someone to fix their leaking roof?)
i think should have a small meet up to organise this in terms of getting the schedule on what to do on that day till where we can come up with the money for donations and also the drinks and food. i don't think its going to be a 1 to 2 hour thing but its going to be a full day activity from past experience.
i have no comment on the publicity thing but if its going to help us get funds for the home then what the h*ck, let's do it!!
i agree with afoi. lets make this first one moving first.

Yeah kenningst u get what i mean. Sigh i thought of adding one sentence to explain but i didn't coz i thought u'll understand. Anyway, i've done quite some charity visits too (under names of my school and a charity organization called Tzu Chi). I tell u wat, it's good if we provide entertainment but it's much better if we provide some other stuffs that they need more. I went there to do medical check-up for them or bring them donation or food n etc. IF we r also gonna do that, where do we get donation? if all by ourselves we r NOT going to do to many places. I'm thinking this as a long-term plan. Gaining publicity is nothing bad as u r thinking.
But well if just entertainment alone, it's fine. U r the boss. Just dun screw me again. Or at least think b4 u throw words to me.
Jeff Gan - July 13, 2005 01:35 AM (GMT)
YOU MEAN WE'RE NOT GONNA GET PAID!!???? :o
just joking....
its just a misundertanding guys, lets not drop innuendoes or accusations.
its all goodwill ...

I vote for Eugie as the stage performer.

you dont vote for the KING to be the KING. the KING is always the KING! no vote needed, he'll INDEED be the GOD LIKED stage performer!
my thought is, maybe vision/david can get some paid show, and since we dont really need the money, all the money we earn, goes to any NGO we gonna visit ?
Paul Long - July 13, 2005 06:44 AM (GMT)
I am not looking for a regular charity commitment. The church I am with is already involved in one (a not so well supported one) and if I have the time I would be helping out there.
I am also involved in other social based stuff overseas in Cambodia so I do not want any misunderstanding about a long term commitment from me. My schedule is crazy and some weeks I am out every night - not a good thing as I have a wife and 2 boys. .
I just thought it would be good for me to get to know more orphanages etc and also have a chance to meet up with some of you MMFers.
So Mr. numbers guy (sorry I forget my own handphone number at times also!) the sooner you get a date and time set, the better for me to juggle my schedule. BUT please, not on a Sunday morning :D
As for taeching balloon sculptures, it's actually pretty easy. Bottom line is, from experience only a handful are in demand. dog / poodle, sword, swan, and perhaps a flower / round ballon combo?

anytin for charity,I`m in.just tell me waht to do.
Peter - July 14, 2005 04:40 AM (GMT)
just a thought. if we are going PUBLIC to collect funds for donations, don't we need a license or something for the govt??someone pls enlighten me on this...

A very valid point. I will consult a lawyer and a NGO group over this when i get back to work on monday.
---
guys: I think the flow of discussion and ideas are flowing like how a productive forum is suppose to be. *pat yourself on the back* :D
My friend is working out details with the homes.
For now, lets continue to thrash out ideas.
Deadline for me, and only me, is END of THE MONTH, to finalise date.
Thank you guys so much for time and interest.

NO cannot..then public will know what we are doing..publicity is no good..cannot..

I was giving ideas with good intention but someone thought i'm having some ulterior purposes..anyway just for someone's own good, actually a good leader is the one who listens to wat other ppl say..not just deny his everything by just one sentence..so what u just did really made me losing respect of u. Sorry i'm not trying to against this gig, you guys carry on doing it k. I'm out of this.
Paul Long - July 15, 2005 01:37 AM (GMT)
Darren, er .. what's going on here ... behind the scenes? Something the rest of us should know?
Aiyo, sorry Mr. Numbers guy and the rest, but since there seems to be soemthing hidden rumbling, I am adding more qualifications again just to be sure that I am not misunderstood ^_^ e-mail and posting stuff sure can be misunderstood :D
Basically, I am not interested in publicity. Kind of embarrasing for me. (just me). I'm just a novce amateur.
I don't want any money from this.
And if funds are being raised etc. I would personally rather not get invovled. Nothing personal against anyone but I have personally decided long ago to avoid anything to do with collecting or handling money (even for charity). I don't even count the money taken for Sunday morning collections etc. Yeah, I am a bit fanatical about this. It's for my own "professional" protection.
I appreciate Mr. Numbers guy's initiative and if I can be there to add some cheer into someone's life, then i would like to chip in. It does me good to help others.
I think it is a good idea to do more than "entertainemnt" and help in other ways, but if is going to be a bigger project, I am out. It's a worthy project but hey, that's a lot more commitment than I can commit to. But if all that si re3quired of me is to turn up and do balloons, hey, I'm in! :)
My 2 cents.

whats wrong with the line ? enlighten me pls.. i dont get it.. who'se against who'se idea now ? keep things simple and clean. Once 3021 get the things out , have a meet up the discuss the details.
paul.. hope u can make it for the ballon scr.
Jeff Gan - July 15, 2005 02:19 AM (GMT)
let me also clear up my stand :-
if its a 1 or 2 hour performance for an orphanage, i'm in. Like paul, I dont want money or publicity.
unfortunately, i dont have the luxury of time for fund raising...i'm sorry..
i work saturdays, and some sundays too...., weekdays i normally dont get home till its late either, so if its a quick performance for kids, i'll help definitely. if its more than that, i'm sorry.
302, anyway its great initiative for u to organise this & i salute u for that.
hopefully there'll be more in the future.
darren,
I'll respect your stand if u wanna back out from this outing but i hope you wont. We newbies ( talking about myself) could use a good magician like u around.
Peter - July 15, 2005 09:18 AM (GMT)
hey darren. i am not too sure if u are talking about me hurting u if it is then i apologize.i dont mean it..
ok ok... i have read the replies over and over again i kinda grab the idea whats going on...i think that when 302 said the sentence "thrash out ideas", i think what he really means is for ppl to throw in ideas not start to eliminate ideas. u agree with me 302?
hey darren, we really want u to be in this man. don't kick us out man. btw about the public thing man, how are we going to get inflow if we do not go to the public? by public i mean getting inflow other then from the MMF members... mind sharing with me??
30210162 - July 18, 2005 03:32 AM (GMT)
(Quick reply, coz i'm working)
Darren misunderstood me (and i'm not quite sure i understood him).
More updates in 2 days.
Cheers!
Brendan Low - July 18, 2005 05:55 AM (GMT)
hmm.... 302 and darren, i think u both misunderstood each other and i dont think there's any bad intentions.
I think it great that 302 comes out with a gig for the orphanage. How to go abt it im not sure but what ever happens would like to see MMF do a good job and bless those in the orphanage. Darren, perhaps u can work things out with 302 and 302 u prob can get some advice and opinions from Darren as he has experience with doing this kinda stuff.
Wish u guys all the best.
Brendan
Darren - July 18, 2005 09:24 AM (GMT)
Hmm ya ok guys..thanks brendan. I hope this is a pure misunderstanding too. And Kenningst, no it's never you who has said something wrong. For those who were confused, i actually felt bad when Mr.No thought that i was doing charity in order to get publicity..isn't that a hurtful and disappointing statement from a leader? but well, since he doesn't know me, i think he didn't really mean so(i hope).
Anyway, wat i meant was publicity is gonna help us to get donation, and maybe some more volunteers to join in..but it's certainly not a must. It's up to you guys..i was just suggesting.
Ya let's practise 'forgive n forget'..n I shall offer my help..after all it's always good to do charity work to the needies.
Let's make it another successful work by MMF!
Paul Long - July 18, 2005 11:28 AM (GMT)
cool! If things are settled, over to you 302 (sounds better than Mr. Numbers) :D to let us know when you have the lastest developments.
Peter - July 18, 2005 01:41 PM (GMT)
cool... everything is back in order!!! YEAH!!! 302... lets get down to business... i think some human resource planning can be done now... want me to help??
zhuanan - July 18, 2005 03:47 PM (GMT)
Guys:
This is great! We should be able to experience yet another "Joy of Magic" lo...
vision - July 19, 2005 02:56 PM (GMT)
wah! I have to read thru all to understand wat is happening here.
Anyway, everybody have a FREE WILL to suggest and have own ideas on Publicity.
If you ask me on organising event, planning is very important, that includes enough publicity to gain leverages to meet our objective. We must set a clear objective on what we wanna acheive here. Be it a certain amount of $$ for charity or to show LOVE to the orphanages.
Darren - July 20, 2005 01:18 AM (GMT)
Yeah thanks vision=)
OK, AGAIN, i'm just suggesting:
1. Are we doing anymore of this kinda community visit in the future? i believe the ans is 'yes'. If so, then isn't this considered 'regular'? wat i'm trying to say is, we'll organize this again in future, but NO one is obligated to participate. Whoever free, feel like doing it, then just join la. I believe 3-5 magicians for a visit will suffice. So tat's not hard rite?
2. If this has become 'regular' (it can be once a month/ once every 2 months etc, as long as we r doin it), why dun we plan for somethin bigger? get publicity (oh sensitive issue again), get donation. HEY WHO KNOWS, we might be another big charity organization in future. And i think it's not that hard to achieve it, david n vision is very experienced in this.
3. I think there is another charity (or many) org. in Sg/m'sia which is formed by a group of magicians. I think they are doin good job.
So let's discuss this issue 'softly'n wisely. :)
Brendan Low - July 20, 2005 03:07 AM (GMT)
Great suggestion there by Darren.
Its ok to get publicity and donation from whoever is willing to support us. Even if we dont get any, its ok coz its all good when we bless these people.
I think for our first gig... keep it simple.... just go out there and do ya stuff. Publicity etc will come later naturally.... and yes David and Vision surely know how to handle this :P.
CHeers!
Brendan
