ms575 - August 24, 2005 03:58 PM (GMT)
Hi,
How many PRO magician you know in Malaysia? Who are they? Have you seen them perform? ON stage? parlor?
Jeff Gan - August 25, 2005 01:44 AM (GMT)
Thats a funny question to ask...are you looking to hire one?
Or are you offering your services?
I think in this forum itself there are a few pros, and quite a few semi pros...
I'm not too sure who or how many because most of us use nicknames...I'm neither btw.
btw, could u intro yourself so we could know u better too? & welcome to the mmf.

It might be interesting to see how different people define semi-pros.
Brendan Low - August 25, 2005 04:16 AM (GMT)
hehe yeah... its hard to say who is pro and all. Some may think pros are those that do magic as a professional job. eg. Anslem is a pro, Lee asher is pro, David Copperfield, Ammar, Daryl, McBride are pros.
Those doing magic as a pro certainly have great skills and talent to make money doing magic.
However, i also use the word pro for lots of other people, those not doing magic as a professional job (just hobby). why? coz they could be a pro if they want to.... basically i call them pro for their skills. eg. Dan and Dave Buck. They dont do magic show etc...they each have other jobs. They can if they want to. they have the skills and ideas.
so yeah... my thinking of pro is not only limited to those that do magic/flourish as their professional job. To me i'll call someone pro if they have exceptional skills in wat they do.
I dunno abt semi-pros. maybe those are the ones that are working on some lil magic project? and will soon get the recognition for their work.. thus soon will be PRO ... lol ;)
Just my opinion,
Brendan

hahaha...good reasoning brendan. I agree.
Again there are many types of magicians....so i guess a pro/semi pro is when they get paid to do an act....evrybody has their own opinion..so i guess u can call yourself whatever you want but your audience are the one that rates you....cheers

In that case, I think you damn pro.
But that's just my opinion.
Another type of pro, is pro's who don't have a "day job". Roy comes to mind.
Semi-pro = Eugie, canbeef.
Pro-card collector = afoi
Pro at forum debate = 30210162

ROY and also James if you would ask me...
Forrest Lim - August 30, 2005 02:16 PM (GMT)
no one is pro but yourself. Please ponder.

The question of pro or not is a subjective thing. What is pro to one, can be a newbie to another, depending on who you talk to.
What sets a professional apart from the others is not so much as in how they dress and perform, but in how they carry and conduct themselves. For example, I wouldn't call a well-dressed magician who behaves like a buffoon a professional (unless he's acting like a buffoon). I would call him/her an idiot! :)
Michael Ammar is a classic example of a professional magician in my opinion. Awesome magician, but it wasn't so much the magic that impressed me. It was him as a person. Always a ready smile regardless of who you are. I have met him at a lecture once and at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. It was a tiring journey for him, but he actually took the time to sign a few of his DVDs, and even allowed me to videocam him up-close on a few wand spin techniques. He was very obliging (unlike some other "pros" which I am not going to mention any names), and I have to say I was really really impressed.
So there you go. Do a few tricks well, have a LIKABLE personality, and you will go places! If the laypeople love you, you are a PRO! ;) Magicians on the other hand will think differently because of one very simple reason. EGO!

anderson chow... u've made a very valid comment there! :)
it makes me think of blaine.... laymen think he is PRO.... one of the best out there.... ^_^
"Some" magicians would not agree on that. ;)
But again, magicians always have other views on other magicians and yes, there are some magicians with a big EGO. <_<
What counts is in the eyes of Laymen. If they think u can entertain and do a good act and astonish u will be PRO in their eyes and they'll remember u.
Anderson Chow, would u mind introducing yaself on the intro section please. Telll us abit abt yaself and ya magic. B)
Cheers!
