Title: Why Flourish?
Samuel Chong - September 16, 2005 12:15 PM (GMT)
1) I see a lot of guys often practise hard in flourishes but have you ever ask yourself why do you wanna learn flourish?? In other words what's the point of learning them?? Is it just because of "cool"?? Why??
2) Do flourishes make you a better card magician??

Let's answer your questions with some questions:
1) I see a lot of guys often practise hard in magic but have you ever ask yourself why do you wanna learn magic?? In other words what's the point of learning them?? Is it just because of "cool"?? Why??
2) Do magic make you a better person??
All in all, I feel that these type of questions stem out from one's personal dislike of an art that you see other people enjoy. No legitimate reply in this thread would satisfy the questioner's biased viewpoint on the particular art in question, and hence controversy is stirred up once again all because a person couldn't help but jump in and point out, however subtlely, that flourishes are "pointless".
Monte- I hope that you can stand from another point of view, and see that there are reasons why people would do such a thing- even though I can sorta tell that you yourself aren't particularly a big fan of the sport :D Come to understand that even though you might not agree with what a person is doing, he has all the right to do so.

Let me make clear my stand the reason I start this topic is to know why some magicians do flourishes and why some don't. What's the reasons behind them that make them say so and think so. Every magicians might have their own reasons and they might be very different from one another as well.
Kevin,
>> I feel that these type of questions stem out from
>> one's personal dislike of an art that you see other people enjoy.
Hahaha :D You make the wrong assumption; I do flourishes as well.
>> hence controversy is stirred up once again all because
>> a person couldn't help but jump in and point out,
>> however subtlely, that flourishes are "pointless".
Your putting words in my mouth, I never said that flourishes are pointless.
>> Do magic make you a better person??
I didn't say person; I said magician.

Monte,
It came across that I purposely misquoted you just for the sake of argument.
In the first paragraph, I referred to the arguments and the viewpoints in the "it" sense-

And then we all got dragged into the picture:

| You make the wrong assumption; I do flourishes as well. |
| QUOTE |
| Your putting words in my mouth, I never said that flourishes are pointless. |
| QUOTE |
>> Do magic make you a better person?? I didn't say person; I said magician. |
As for this:
| QUOTE |
>> Do magic make you a better person?? I didn't say person; I said magician. |
I know you did, Monte, and I'm sorry if my point came across that I was purposely misquoting you. However, if I had instead said "Do magic make you a better card magician?", I think it might not exactly come across the same way as I had intended it to.
--------------------------------------------------
However-
in the SECOND paragraph, I DID come across across as flat-out accusing:
| QUOTE |
| Monte- I hope that you can stand from another point of view, and see that there are reasons why people would do such a thing- even though I can sorta tell that you yourself aren't particularly a big fan of the sport. Come to understand that even though you might not agree with what a person is doing, he has all the right to do so. |
And I apologize for doing so- I was having a rough day and, seeing your post, quickly assumed it to be another one of those "why do you guys waste your time doing this sort of thing??" kind of post, what with all the grammatical errors and multiple questions marks. Now knowing that you ARE in fact a flourisher yourself, I feel that I was pretty brash for having to "attack" your stance on the assumption that you were "prejudiced" against flourishes- but do phrase your question more clearly next time like you did in your second post in this thread, so guys like me won't be as inclined to do what I did.
All in all, there is no fight between us going on, just a casual misunderstanding that I hope this post cleared up.
Let's leave it at that.

actually this topic is almost similiar (but reversed) to the question Jeff raised in the topic under Card Magic.

1) Choose your answer and everytime you try to reply choose another answer:
-Because it is the meaning of life.
-What was ur point in learning magic? Is it just because of "cool"? Why?
-Flourishes can be a standalone entertainment. So therefore "Coz I don't want to perform magic but flourish instead." I mean like, DUH!
-It's a hobby.
-It is cool.
-It earns more money than magic(less competition).
-It doesn't have to be just because it's cool.
-It's hip and trendy in the magician society.
-It's sporty.
-Why not?
-To laugh at all those who can't do the flourishes.
-All of the above.
No meaning to attack on the magicians here as I am also a magician. It's not so hard to grasp if you think a little.
2) If you need to ask this question, you don't need the answer. And the answer is yes and no and it doesn't matter! And nope, you can't choose one between them. If you can't figure out how to put them all together then you really don't need the answer thereby it also means such a question won't come out unless no thinking is involved. The only effect from asking this question is just show that u do not think properly or ask questions ignorantly. No offense. But it's so obvious. Do not feel insulted but take this as an opportunity to learn yourself.
If you can't understand above:
1&2) Go away, noob.

Flourishes are more than showing-off to your audience. They are proof of one's dedication and professionalism as a performer. Flourishes are what may separate you from your uncle Joe doing a card trick. The more skilled performer will naturally receive more credit, recognition, and respect for his or her skills. A person sees the entertainer who performs the occasional flourish as being passionate about what he or she does and may be more apt to hire someone who is that professional. Your clients expect a magician with skill and experience.

Justme,
I just came back from performing at the show that you recommended. I tersalah jalan…almost can't get back to Penang in time. Hahaha.....thanks for the business; the people there pay good tips :D . Btw, did you manage to close the deal for the illusion performance that I recommended to you? How’s business in KL? Hope its good…
>> people who like xcm just becos they like it
>> anyone can like anything , it all depends on their own personality.
Thanks for your humble reply.
Aerox,
Sorry for replying late, I wasn’t around these 2 days because I was performing at 3 shows in 3 different places which were all out station.

Maybe, I didn’t think before I asked the question....haha :D
However, thanks for your reply. You really think very hard to answer my 2nd question. I really, really appreciate it.
>> Do not feel insulted but take this as an opportunity to learn yourself.
Hahaha... :D
I’ll try to find some time to do so. Don't worry, I'm always trying hard to be a better magician. Maybe this will bring an increase and breakthrough for my current 80 shows that I'm performing annually.

Monte,
First let me say hi to you as i think we havn't met or talked in forum b4. Well i'm not sure whether we're sharing the same feeling now: Why a ques asked in such a benign manner (it's quite obvious to me that you asked it out of plain curiosity) will get you all types of unexpected replies? I must say i'm surprised and very baffled..sometimes ppl just dun seem to be able to talk nicely..I dun see why they can't just reply in a humble manner, instead of sounding like being soo offended. (or at least, why not try to understand the ques first?) Well it simply shows one's capacity and personality. Hmm think tat's all i should say, dun wanna get into another meaningless dispute.

Kam - September 19, 2005 04:27 AM (GMT)
Okay, I've been watching this thread for sometime, and one thing I don't get: Why do most of you guys take Monte's question offensively? It was a clear, honest, innocent question of why do you flourish, not some "flourish is gay, not for magic" kinda stuff.
Chill guys... this guy's a pro, and with that many shows, I'm PRETTY SURE he does flourish too.
On track: It's fun, challanging, skillfull, extraordinary, and pretty :) just like magic (except for this one, you don't actually fool people teehee!).
Samuel Chong - September 19, 2005 10:30 AM (GMT)
Darren,
>> Well i'm not sure whether we're sharing the same feeling now
^_^
>> it's quite obvious to me that you asked it out of plain curiosity
I have answers for the questions I've asked. However, the reasons I still asked these question is to see other magicians point of view, what make them say so or think it in that manner.
Thanks for your reply - Kevin (you are a very sporting guy), Rainking (for your infomation regarding the link), Jeff, Brendan, justme (this guy is amazing in card magic whether it's manipulation or close-up; it's a must to watch his card flourish), Darren, Kam and Aerox.
Kam,
>> I'm PRETTY SURE he does flourish too.
Thanks for your compliment. Yes, I do flourishes but I only do it when it's appropreate (it's all depends on the spectators, timing, the routine itself and ...... ). Anyway, I still have a lot more to learn from you guys who are practising harder than me.

alrighty, i guess this is the first time i've actually plucked up the courage to actually come into this sub-section. i don't do cards very well, unless u count some simple mind-reading stuff and kids books tricks.
flourishing terrifies me. i have great admiration and envy for ppl who flourish, and i know that i haven't taken the time of effort to seriously learn to play around with cards. sigh, maybe one day. haha.
anyway, i just wanted to say that u card-folks are cool. i wish i had the talent and patience to play with pasteboards.
Conrida - October 2, 2005 09:37 AM (GMT)
Baalan, you're fortunate to know little about pastebroads. I only able to do 2 or 3 card tricks but I do it well, that's all I know. I can flourish but I never showoff in front my audiences. I try my best to avoid any card tricks in my repertoire except ESP card it's different story. After all, Mentalism should be like that.
Kam - October 2, 2005 03:29 PM (GMT)
No, YOU guys are lucky to not start with flourishing... otherwise you'll be stuck like me (and a bunch of other ;)) who end up loving this thing so much.
