Title: Malaysia Magic Competition
Description: Planning to organise competition 2006

MagicaLee - October 12, 2005 05:04 PM (GMT)
:D I am planning to organise competition for Malaysian Illusionists/Magicians for the Year 2006. Any suggestions from you guys? How many of you will participate?

*pOof*

Andrew Loh - October 13, 2005 05:10 AM (GMT)
Hey, it's a good idea. :) - Would love to hear this more and more.

Yup, the question is still based on the judges, so, where do you find the judges??

From US, UK, etc???? If local magicians, but we must find those magicians that are very skillful in the particular art. If the competition is focused on card manipulation, then I would consider Jeff McBride as honour judges. Just my humble views.

But, I would like to add one thing, do you think when a competition is going on among magicians, do you guys think that those participants perform their stuffs which can be found in DVD or books????

Are you guys aim more towards their own originality in competition???

Andrew

MagicaLee - October 13, 2005 05:17 AM (GMT)
Hi Anderson & Andrew Loh,

Thank you for both of your suggestions, some of your concerns is also part of my challenges.
I believe we will come out a way to overcome those challenges.

Going to set up a working committee for this project!

Will update you guys soon!

MagicaLee - October 13, 2005 10:35 AM (GMT)
got the number from his website, kawan. Anderson Website

Andrew Loh - October 13, 2005 01:32 PM (GMT)
Just a suggestion, I came across reading many top names in their competition such as FISM, magic castle award, etc, normally these magicians perform their own routines or effects came up by their own unique way, that means they don't perform effects found in DVD or books. :) - Such as John Cornelius, J.J Sanvert, Tabary, Peter Duffie, Jean Pierre Vallarino, and so much more.

I think if the rules are set in our Malaysia competition, this would be great as we can see the creative side of the magicians rather than perform those routines we already seen in DVD, read in books, etc. I don't refer them that 100% the same, unless they switch or adding some variations to it, sometimes the effects would become even more STRONGER and KILLER!

If the routines they perform are from DVDs or from books, I humbly don't think this would be regarded as 'quality'. :)

Normally, judges would expect to see the creative side of a magician as I have asked a few top names in magic through emailing. ;)

What do you guys think???

Just my humble opinion!

Andrew

Brendan Low - October 13, 2005 03:43 PM (GMT)
hehe... thats the number in canada rite?

anyway, back to the topic.

Andrew, i dunno... i think its yes and no. I dont think everything in magic competition need to be original creations. If we are asking for original materials only to compete in msia.. i think there will be v few participants. Most of us learn the tricks/magic from other magicians. Its not often that we come out with original ideas and routines on our own.

Ur the few malaysian i know and have met who are actively seeking new original ideas. I respect that :). Its awesome some of ya effects! :)

so yeah i think we should mainly judge on performance style and enterntaining magic and also level of difficulty etc. Of course originality would get some mark as welll.....

what do others think?

Btw, how abt flourish competitions? lol

Andrew Loh - October 14, 2005 02:20 AM (GMT)
Hi Anderson Chow,

:o - No, what I meant 'creative' was variations of the performance, I meant something unique or different ways the magicians perform his routines rather than we already seen in books or DVDs.

Yes, it's hard nowadays to create something and say your own as there are too many effects already in many sources and normally we came up something, most probably is already in print or variations only.

Again, what you guys think??? :D

Jeff Gan - October 14, 2005 03:13 AM (GMT)

Heck, I wrote a long post about my thoughts when I accidently hit some stupid key and my message disappeared before i clicked "post".

I'm too lazy to retype now, so this is the condensed version :-

In my opinion, points should be given for originality in addition to the other catergories. If the competitor's routine is original, he scores more points , thus bigger chance of winning.

Perhaps some of the more experienced guys here who have judged or taken part in a competition can help give comments/advise.

Just my 2 cents.

Jeff Gan - October 14, 2005 03:50 AM (GMT)
Anderson,

Thanks for the tip. :) I'll try to remember to do that next time.

Yeah, I get what u are saying. There's no way we can know everything.
But at least the more blatant copies will be reckonised, right?

actualy i just realised in my previous condensed post, my whole gist of what i was saying originally is missing. I wanted to say that there was not many possible ways to come up with an entirely original routine (much like what u said in your previous post) but at least performers should present the routine in their own style (presentation & patter) wherever possible.

andersonchow - October 14, 2005 04:49 AM (GMT)
Rainking,

There, you said it in the last paragraph!

Joe Xavier - October 14, 2005 01:40 PM (GMT)
I suggest a small scale one first...

We have not yet even set up a proper ring of magicians and here we are, trying to go make an award. I am definitely not for it for now. I can foresee this happening in the future but now is too soon. Not that I do not trust your skills or what but we should start simple in this website first. Start off with looking for sponsors for prizes, then go on with it. Even BIG sites like Ellusionist go for small competitions. If you seriously wanna make it big, I say make it a grand one and not just a small scale. I would wanna win something from a grand competition and get reknowned for it rather than a small one that is not really recognized....

Just freakin your mind...

and my dua puluh sen...

Eric Liew - October 14, 2005 01:55 PM (GMT)
the one i joint was where the participants were divided to 3 categories....member of club less than 12 months, member more than 12 months, professional workers.
And the audience will be the judges...giving 3 points to the best magician, 2 for the 2nd, and 1 for the 3rd....There was also an award for most entertaining performer
All the marks will be gathered in the end and contestant with the most point wins

MagicaLee - October 14, 2005 02:37 PM (GMT)
Hi, eryanic,
If you don't mind mine asking, which competition you entered? what are the awards for the contestants? 1st prize, 2nd prize 3rd prize? & Where?

Your informations will help me to work out on the more attractive prizes & Btw, I had main sponsor & co-sponsor standby for the year 2006 competition.

TQ.
MagicaLee

Andrew Loh - October 14, 2005 02:52 PM (GMT)
Well, I am not really sure about magic competition as I never experienced before and I just read what I know from magic magazines.

Anderson Chow,

Yes, I do know there are many DVDs and books out there, I think if the judge has lots of knowledge in books, credits and whatever he has read in mind, I don't think this is difficult for him to sense something he has read or watched before. That's why it's better to have judges that have HUGE knowledge in a particular field. :)

I sent some of my effects to other top names in magic overseas, surprisingly the moment I sent to them, they already know the plots or ideas came from where, which books, authors, etc. :o - This is very impressive.

Yes, this post must be a very long thread, I really hope that people can contribute more of their ideas in here so that everyone here gains the benefits of the idea from this competition. It would be a big challenge for all of us here especially if the competition really implement in the near future. B)

My 3 cents! ;)

Cheers,
Andrew

Wow! This is cool! :)

Great idea! Maybe I should find out from overseas magicians that entered in magic competition before and try to find out how their competition system works! :)

Best,
Andrew

MagicaLee....this was a competition in Australia (i'm currently studying in Australia).
The prizes were trophy and some cash for each of the the top 3 winners.
This was a competition for members of that club/society..hence they were able to break down to those categories.

But if u intend to make it an open competition, then i guess u can't really divide the categories into that.

Magical Lee,

Could you pls post the details of the competition? What categories are there to participate in? Are there different levels for each category or anything goes?

How many tricks/magic effects and how long does each person have?

How will all these be conducted?

What attractive prizes are you talking abt?

We like to know more info please.

Cheers,
Brendan

MagicaLee - November 8, 2005 05:47 AM (GMT)
Dear Brendan,
Thank you for your quick respond.

We will select top 12 magicians by our panel of jury.
The main category will be on 'Stage Magic' because it will air over our national TV over more than 10 weeks. (Is a weekly magical contest)

The last few magical contests will be aired 'live'.

The top magician of the year will receive a cash prize of RM25,000 plus a brand new car.

You may contact me personally for the rules & regulations (by PM your contact number), if you think you that you are qualify to be one of the contestant.

Magically yours,

MagicaLee

Dear RainKing & Brendan,

It does not matter whether u r a pro or not.
Close up will be just part of the competitions, we have the fomula to calculate the points for the contestants.

The period will be around Mar 2006 - June 2006

Will invite all of you to be the audience if you are not the contestant.

Magically yours,

MagicaLee

er..... i think so joe... hehe....

if u wanna win the 25 grand... u have to spend money practice like crazy until perfect, spend a couple of thousand dollars on props and carry all the way there, do a good show and then maybe.... just maybe u will win....

i think u're right... its more for the pros.. that already has the props and experience to compete...

i surely like to go and watch be amaze only...

Cheers,
Brendan

Eric Liew - November 8, 2005 04:24 PM (GMT)
hopefully it'll be during my holidays!
will wanna watch this competition if possible!

James Tong, you entering? :P

Ignatius - November 8, 2005 08:49 PM (GMT)
Darn, another reality show, sounds interesting tho -_- ..... Magician Idol ........ TheMagician(MagicMagicMagic,MAGIC!) or how about The Amazing Ace..... Very likely that most laymen watching it are mostly to see if there'll be any exposure of secrets. And there's a possibility of "Expose your secrets or you'll be out of the show!". Anyway, I have a little skeptism on the watchability of this show, the Magicians that are most likely to succeed are those experienced in multiple fields instead of creativity or originality as it is likely they will give you limits and stipulations to perform. If for street magic, then the show might sound okay but stage magic.....there's always and already have preparation and freedom of movement. Hmm.... street magic not the proper word, what's the proper word? ....Impromptu. Yeah that's it. BTW, did you guys know that in one series of Survivor, there was a Magician in it? ^^
