Title: Approaching Spectator
Description: i did smthing terribly wrong
KenophLai - January 7, 2006 01:38 PM (GMT)
i'm living in a hostel and there are ofcoz students from everywhere of the world since this is an international school
there is this guy living beside my room from kenya, africa who lookde damn cool and big size...hewent into my room this morning and i showed him my forkbending video and my second video...he asked me whether i can move objects without touching it, and i showed him PK coin(move a coin by using IT)...he then believed that i'm really a psychic
this is bad because i think he will kill me if he found out that i'm not a psychic
this is a bad example of approaching spectator..wrong approach..if he's just a stranger B than it's perfectly alright. but when he is my neighbour, it's just damn bad
use a correct method of approaching your spectator,by categorized them into differenty groups:
a ) someone you are not going to meet for th rest of your life
b ) someone who's close to you (best friend, girl friend or gay partner whatever)
c ) someone you are going to depend on(teachers and friends)
for group A ppl, you can use any way to present your trick, make them impressed, make them believe that u have psychic or you are a godlike gambler or whatsoever..since you are not going to see them again anyway
for group B ppl, IMO do less effects to them coz they'll ask for the secret and trust me..no matter how good you are, they are not going to believe that you possessed seceret abilities and they are still going o think that david blaine is better than you(even when both of you are doing two card monte)...let the others tell them about your magic
for group C ppl, dont imaged yourself as a psychic...when they found out it's magic, it'll be all screw-up
in conclusion: I'm just an entertainer except for group A spectator i'll never tell the others that i'm a psychic...NEVER(i'm not derren brown)

I'm not sure magicians claiming to be psychic is still a trend these days... I thought that's Uri Geller's days.
So where would you categorize your Kenyan friend in? I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish with the whole psychic thing, but if that's what you claim, be ready for the repercussion (sp?).
Sorry if I get the whole thing wrong :)

look on the bright side, if u convinved him you are psychic, you must have did your effects well. :D
what i'd do, is the next time he ask you about your powers, just tell him you do magic. It gonna be tough refusing to tell them how you did it..but I'm sure you'll manage. Tell him about your code of ethics and how the MMF will hunt you down and burn you on a stake if you tell him the secrets, I'm sure he'll understand.
In case you didnt realise, I was joking about the last bit. i was serious the rest.

hehe.... yeah i agree with Rainking, having someone whether a fren or a stranger believe that u have a psychic powers to do stuff is no problem.
They can beleive what they want to beleive. Leave it to their judgement. Just dont confirm it if u dowan to.
Its up to people to judge you and ya performance. Just do ya part as a magician and follow the magician's code and u'd be safe i think. U can tell ya best frens how everything is just an illusion and that u dont poseess psychic powers etc, they will still know u do magic and respect u for the love u have for the art. Passion counts more. People respect u for ya passion and not just wat u can do.

i'll tell you why he believed that i'm psychic...
i did the effect, he shouted:"dow did you do that?"
i'm used to reply by saying :"i'm born with it"
"so you are gifted!!!"
HOLY
nevermind i to plan to tell him i'm a magician maybe few days later he cool down a bit

Here are my thoughts. No one has to agree, though. :)
part one
It is perfectly alright for you to market yourself as a psychic, only if you point out to a spectator that what you do is purely for entertainment. By this I mean that you have to tell them that they must view your routines as something to be enjoyed as a form of entertainment, and you yourself must be careful. There are many cultures in the world that absolutely believe in this stuff. A lot of so-called psychics are so good at what they do, that they even convince themselves that they have psychic powers. Do not ever fall into that trap.
part two
What I do is tell spectators that :
I'm an illusionist. But whereas people like Blaine and Copperfield do illusions for the eyes, I create illusions for the mind. To paraphrase Banachek, "I use all my five senses to create the illusion of a sixth."
You can even go with the line that everyone has a bit of psychic power, but you have learned to enhance them through training and all that crap. It's a valid line if you are a performing mentalist. I myself used to do this, but now I go with the mind illusionist thingy.
======================================================
Anyway, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Like Rainking said, tell him you're a magician. He will probably enjoy it more and start asking for more tricks. Oops! I said the "T" word! haha.
Good luck.
thoughtfully,
Baalan.

yea from now onwards i'll say i'm a psychic but i use my power to entertain the others...or i'd just simply say i'm a magician, though the reactions i get might be smaller.....
